I have a Windows Server Standard 2003 that i use as a file sharing server. Simple Workgroup, not a domain environment. I have two Mac pros that have intermittent connection problems to the server.
View 1 RepliesI've tried typing some search terms for what I think I want to be able to do, but I'm getting nothing relevant- I figured I'd just spell out my problem on the forums and see if there are any solutions. I work for an EMS organization that has several windows workstations (running xp) that connect to a larger server, which hosts our shared drive ("U") as well as windows specific programs for generating reports. Specifically, one of our call logs is a microsoft access database that is linked via our network to generate a specific reference number for our calls.
Now, I'm moving up in the world and going to be directing human resources and pr for the agency, and while the windows workstations are nice, I am a damn fine mac user and would love to use my unibody 17" pro for the job. Here is where my questions come in. I'd like to use my mac running virtualbox, parallels, or whatever with an xp install to connect to the server and have a typical workstation desktop (the U drive, network attached programs) next to my osx desktop. I know macs can access shared drives on server 2003, but can I set up a virtual machine to emulate one of our workstations?
I'm just posting for the archives my success with installing Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 Standard Edition on a Jan 2008 Mac Pro (8x2.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM). To set up Windows Windows Server 2003 R2 on a Jan 2008 Mac Pro:
Boot OS X and run Boot Camp Assistant as usual. Install Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 as usual (comes as 2 discs, but only requires the second disk upon your first successful log in so this isn't a problem with bootcamp). Eject the Windows installation CD in the windows explorer by right clicking the D: drive and selecting Eject.........................
After some searching, I've seen three tricks: disabling IPV6 on the Mac, doing the same on the PC (my Windows Server 2003 installation didn't have it installed), and adding a line to my /etc/smb.conf file. None seem to really give me full transfer speeds.
Are there any tricks specific to Windows Server 2003 or anything new to make this work like normal? It's simple file transfer over SMB, seems like at the 5th iteration of Mac OS X we'd have better speeds.
One day the users started to complain that the mac we have can't login to the domain so I sat down for 30-45minutes trying to figure out what had caused it - only to figure out that it was simply because the time was off by 5 minutes so the domain controller refused the connection. Is there a way to syncronize the time?

Firstly I can't access OWA through Safari at all, every time I type it in it says 'Safari can't find the server' - it is sbs2003, and this works fine in IE Ideally I wanted to set up access through Mail or Entourage (2008) however I've read that it is not possible to connect to exchange through this. Frustrating as I have just bought this and have a free upgrade to 2011 but only home and student so apparently this won't have outlook on here either. I have been trying to connect for days and I just can't figure out the best way to get to my emails? if you could point me in the direction of a good walkthrough that would be great.

Apple has built in support for Microsoft's Exchange Server 2007. This is what, on a PC, pushes and synchronises all your email, contact info and calendar entries to Outlook and your phone. By doing this, OS X's Mail, iCal and Address Book apps sync up just like Outlook. Note that if your company is still running Exchange Server 2003 (ours is), you will still be able to sync Snow Leopard with your office server. View 6 Replies View RelatedI manage a small network of 15 users, and they all currently have PC's running windows XP Pro SP2. There is 1 accounting server running server 2003 SBS, and a File Server for the Lab running SBS 2003 SP2. There is 1 user who uses RRAS setup via VPN to connect to the files and work from home on weekends etc.. the laptop he has is brand new, setup and managed all his settings so that the environment will be easily manageable. Now, the problem is, intermittenly he cannot connect to the shares, the network goes down, the server hickups, it needs rebooting, its setup properly, everything is ok, it runs good, I upgraded the ram, to 4GB.
this happens waaay to much, and I spend way to much time fixing these issues over and over, from possible firewall issues on his laptop, that have been corrected, to just no connection getting through from him, when clearly most of the time the thing works. The server has not been tampered with at all, neither has his laptop, both systems are 100% virus/spyware/bot free............
I have a Snow leopard server with a folder shared Via SMB for the 2 PC's we have, all the macs can read and write to this folder OK. About once a week the 2 pc's take 10 mins to start and then cannot connect to the share. Web/email and sharing betwen them still works. I can ping the server from both. I've turned off the smb and restarted it. Also tried restarting the Xserve. This still has no effect. All internal firewalls are off. I've tried guest access.

I have problem with a clients windows laptop. It used to be able to connect to their companies mac server. But since he got back from a trip the laptop doesn't connect anymore. I can ping the server. I can successfully connect to my work server (Windows 2003 Small Business Server) using the built in VPN utility. That isn't an issue.
However, once connected I have no way to navigate the file system to be able to copy and paste files between our server and my MacBook Pro. I'm not sure why.
When I'm in the office and am connected to our network via ethernet cable and connect to the server via VPN, the different drives show up in the Shared section in Finder.
However, when I connect remotely from home those drives don't show up in Finder.
This is my last year in high school and I really was looking forward to the native exchange support...but our school uses exchange 03... I'm pretty sure the college I go to will have 07, but is there any chance apple will get support for 03 just like the iphone does?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am converting from a Windows system to a Mac. The mail client on the Windows box is Outlook 2003. The mail on the windows box had been previously stored in a number of PST files using POP3. The recommended procedure to convert to the Mac is to first in Outlook 2003 convert from POP3 to IMAP. While in the middle of this procedure I got a message that the PST file that Outlook 2003 creates for the local IMAP store is full. Further, it is 97-2002 format file rather than the new type used as the default in Outlook 2003. In any case, I need to get the rest of the mail converted. Another issue is that viewing specific folders in the IMAP store on the Windows box results in an initial display of items, followed by the window being cleared, and the folder size function showing that the folder is empty. However, attaching to the IMAP store on the server from the Mac Mail program still shows the contents, so I think this is an anomaly of the poor implementation of IMAP in Outlook 2003. What do I need to do to get the rest of the POP3 mail into IMAP?

Great forum you've got here..Right my issue is as follows.I have a new iMac Pro on snow leopard 10.6.4 and it is linked to a Windows SBS server 2007 but i don't think i've done it properly.When i switch the machine on all i get on boot up is 1 local user Sometimes i can leave it and it will offer me the 'Other' option which i can then login to the server But most times it doesn't to that... I have to logon as that local user and then unbind the windows domain and rebind it then when i logoff it shows me the 'Other' user Also another thing thats annoying is it doesn't map anything automatically i have had to create a alias icon on my desktop to go to my server space and it can take up to a minute to connect to the server..

The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files. That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issuesÂ
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing. E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.Â
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number. we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion

I'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â
