How do I do this? I want to launch app 2 while working in app 1 without having app 2 jump in front of app 1, but others, such as Microsoft Office Suite for mac, jump to the front every time (namely excel) no matter what.

here's an example:
i'm copying text from a webpage using safari and that i plan to edit in MS Office Word and so right after i open the webpage and its loading i use spotlight to launch Word and then go back to Safari. What happens is that while it is opening, at some point it will come to the front and interrupt my session in Safari.
For example, (when Safari or Terminal application is already launched) pressing the dock icon or launching from quicksilver brings the window to the front (or moves to a specific space where the window is in).
Is it possible to modify this behavior to opening a new window? By clicking the dock icon (or some sequence of keyboard shortcuts) I want to open a new window of safari or terminal. Furthermore, it would be great if
this can be done to the current 'space'.
Is there a simple way of doing this?

The problem now is that I cant launch the photobooth application and i-chat cant detect the i-sight camera. Is it the newer version of i-life thats causing this! Bought this mac from a friend and I really dont know if the factory installed OS is the one that is installed now. It may have been upgraded likewise. Does all this relate to the fatc that I cant use photobooth and ichat doesnt detect the isight?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having difficulties adapting to OSX. On windows, when you open Photoshop or Dreamweaver or any other application, ou can focus on that application only. On Mac, if you have the browser opened you can see it while in photoshop. I do web design and I never know whether I'm looking a print screen or the actual site. Can anyone recommend an app that "fades" the background so I can visually focus on the program being used? I tried Think, it works fine but with only one app at a time and I that to happen with all apps, as this is annoying for any software.

Note: You can create keyboard shortcuts only for existing menu commands. You cannot define keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an application or switching between applications. Am I slow, or is this saying I can't "quick launch" an app with a press of one button? Is this really true? Is there no "one touch" way to launch stuff? Is there a way to launch itunes from shell in a way that will give it the same instructions that it gets when you hold down the option key and open it from finder?
So everything installed on my Lion iMac works absolutely fine. However, I recently tried to re-install Appfresh (an application updater), so I used Appcleaner to uninstall it, grabbed a new download, dragged it to Applications as normal, double-clicked it.. nothing. The icon sits in my dock, and the indicator pulses, continuously, but the application never appears. It's not in the Force Quit menu, and Activity Monitor has no trace of it either.
I thought, okay, something up with Appfresh. But I've since tried a couple of other apps, and a game (Botanicula), and the exact same thing happens. I've done nothing new in the way I've installed them, opened their .dmg files, and dragged the application into Applications, completely normally, but they all do the "sit in the dock and nothing else" thing. If I left-click them once in the dock, they vanish, and that's all I hear of them. I've tried Disk Utility to do both verify and repair permissions to both the disk and the partition, but that hasn't solved the problem. I'm running the latest 10.7.3 with all patches to remove Flashback, etc.
I have a late 2006 MacBook (the one in my signature). It's running the latest issue of Snow Leopard (10.6.4). I have upgraded the factory RAM from 1GB to 2GB, and the factory HDD from 120 GB with a 320 GB hard drive. Lately, all my apps are taking forever to launch. Firefox took 27 bounces before stopping, and then another 10 seconds or so before the window actually appeared. VirtualBox used to be snappy and responsive, but now it's so slow I actually boot up my 8-year old Dell if I need to use Windows. It never used to be this slow.
I'm constantly getting beachballs...even simply quitting Firefox seems to be too much work. Just for kicks, I popped in the factory hard drive and WOW everything felt so much smoother. As far as I can tell, the only things that are different between that hard drive and my current one are that (1) the old one is running Leopard (10.5.6), and (2) I have created a secondary account on the newer setup for my fiance. My two best guesses at this point are:
1. Issue with the new hard drive?
2. MacBook is slightly underpowered for running Snow Leopard?
I purchased and downloaded Warcraft III from blizzard and was wondering if I could learn how to solve this problem. After The download is finished, I attempt to open up the installer and I get a message saying "Application launch failure: The application "installer" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "<installerLauncher><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices><>".

How the heck to I stop Lion from launching old docs when I open a new doc in MS Word, Excel, Preview, etc? I HATE this feature. Twice now I've edited the wrong document because when I click on a new Word doc, one that I worked on last automatic pops up on top of it. This is a ridiculous feature! Also, I don't need photos that I looked at yesterday magically opening when I open a new photo in Preview. That can be embarrassing if is someone is looking over my shoulder, if you know what I mean. Do I need to make sure I close all old docs instead of just quitting. Is there a way to just turn this frustrating auto open feature off?

I started up my computer and don't see any of the icons or HD icon on my desktop, but can see the image and the toolbar pops up on the bottom. I cant figure out how to change the background color of it in candybar. I'm sick of the standard grey mac color.When I'm in candybar I go to the dock section-->view-->dock-->preview background..the options under preview background are greyed out. However, when I changed my background via command in the terminal by switching the defaultdesktop.jpg with another picture in the CoreServices folder, My picture does not show up on the login screen instead it is just a plain blue screen. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I see various Mac tutorials, tips, or suggestions, I usually see people launch applications by going to the folder (e.g. Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal). I've always been perplexed by this, because I have always launched my applications using Spotlight, and find that I can launch applications much more quickly this way (less than a second).
My question is: how do you usually launch applications?
Edit: and I see that I've forgotten to include Dock. I suppose that can go under Other.
I'm running OSX 10.4.11 with a 2 GHz Intel Cor 2 Duo and 2 GB of RAM.
When I try to load some applications (specifically CoRD and ImageResizer) they just briefly appear in the dock and then disappear, failing to open. These programs were not recently installed.
I've restarted, uninstalled/reinstalled the programs, verified/repaired permissions, verified/repaired the disk, re-updated the combo patch, run in a newly created account, cleared the cache, and deleted the preferences. With all of this, the programs are still failing to launch. Why? How can I get them to open? It's not OS threatening, but quite annoying.
Photoshop 7 installed without a hitch on my mac book running 10.5, but it won't launch (unexpected error). It worked fine on 10.4.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. A few days ago iTunes 10 started causing my computer to go crazy every time I launched it (didn't realize it was iTunes at this point causing the problems). The computer would slow to a snail's pace and eventually completely freeze. Then a day or so later iTunes stopped launching all together. It bounces in the dock, stops and then has to be force quit. Most disturbingly after one of these unsuccessful launches, when I try to shut down, the computer hangs and basically freezes requiring a hard shut down with the power button. View 6 Replies View RelatedBackground: A day or two after plugging a USB that had been plugged into a virus ridden PC into my Mac, the internet went berserk. My father told me that he thought it was the USB that had messed the internet up. A few days later, he said that the USB was fine, it was just that Apple came out with a Security Update that changed our router access password (we cannot access our own internet because our password was being changed by a "Security Update"). So, in a kind effort to provide internet for me, he went into my Account Settings and changed my permissions so I was able to access the Application "Internet Connect". Well, I was able to run the application and connect to our internet, but I couldn't launch any applications that didn't either: a.)Come with the machine or b.)Need the administrator password to install.
The Problem: I cannot launch any applications that didn't need the administrator password or come with the system. I AM able to run Apps such as iChat, iTunes, Ventrilo(required administrator password) and Quicktime. I AM NOT able to run any of the games that I have downloaded, teamspeak, transmission, teamviewer, or any .dmg file. After two weeks of looking for possible causes and trying everything in our power, my dad and I can't find the cause of this. He has taken off all parental control and given me control of everything on my account, but still I can't launch anything.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use two monitors: an Apple Cinema display and a Dell, which is display number 2. I installed SL and it was normal until I rebooted the first time. Now every time I boot up, the only display that is found is the Dell and I have to go into preferences and select "detect displays" to make the main one show up. It loads as if the Dell is the only display, and since it is smaller it messes up my desktop, lumping all my icons on top of each other. When I click "detect displays," it moves everything back to the Apple monitor, making it the main display as it should be, but it is all out of whack.
