Software :: G4 Desktop Blower Is Always Blowing?
Apr 16, 2009
I just bought a new iMac and it is really quiet. But I don't intend to retire my old G4 desktop. The olny thing that bothers me is the blower. It is always on even if I am not working on the machine. When I put it to sleep the blower goes off.
I have another G4 desktop (slightly older) which is no where near as noisy.

Several years ago I was interested in G5s and I saved this post called "Solutions for dead G5." Yesterday, I acquired a G5 dual proc 1.8 which works fine. I notice your forum is full of complaints re chipset or processor failures as mentioned in JeffDy's post mentioned above. My question is re prevention. JeffDy refers to "a small blower hidden behind the HD fan." I found his original post in your forum but the image links no longer work and I don't yet know my way around the G5 guts to find that fan.
Can you tell me, is this fan a worthy issue for prevention, should I locate it and clean it? After reading so many complaints about this sort of failure, is my XB4011NPQES vulnerable to BGA failures?

Recently I have woken up during the night because my Macbook has randomly 'awoken' causing my two external hard drives to spin up and its internal system fan to start blowing loudly. This is weird for a start. What's weirder is that it doesn't fully wake up when it does this, or at least my external display doesn't come on, it just sits there in this half awake/half asleep state with the fan blowing a gale. If it's doing something weird like waking on LAN or Bluetooth or one of my iDevices trying to sync etc, is there a way to disable this or at the very least kill the noisy fan?

My new macbook air is 10.7.3 s running hot, with the fan blowing after about one hour on the internet. It will also run very hot with the fan blowing when it is closed and in sleep mode, is this normal? My macbook pro did not do this.

Yesterday I installed snow leopard (finally) and planning on downloading Lion. Its 22 hours later and now my fans are blowing loud. I had this problem on my "old" IMAC that ended up with a logic board failure after living a short 2 1/2 years. This IMAC is ironically the same age but we won't go there. I read one comment that this might be a transient issue that will last a week or so after the install. Hard Drive fan running at 5900 rpms, temps are at 37-40. Â

My menu icons kept flashing on and off for a while. I left the computer by itself for a bit and returned to find the fans blowing at full blast and the cursor wouldn't move. So I pressed the power button to turn off the computer and restarted
My console log showed this repeated about every 30 seconds for about 30 mins
I think the icon flashing was a result of having a film dvd in an external drive like in this thread [URL]
I've ejected a film DVD that was in a Lacie external drive and verified my internal and external hard drives to check for any errors. All were ok.
I'm not too worried about the menu icons flashing but I am bother about the fans blowing like this. The fans have blown at full blast and crashed the computer about 12 times in the last 4 months when I have been away from the computer. So i'm a bit bothered about leaving the G5 alone. I haven't been able to replicate this fan issue - its random. Erasing the HD and installing Leopard doesn't seem to have stopped if from happening (I had the same problem in Tiger)
I have attached a screen capture of my Stat widget below
The slots and backside fans are always stuck at 76rpm and 51rpm. Also CPU A is normally at a high temperature than CPU B. I think the highest i've seen that temperature at has been about 75 but i don't look at it often. These stats were just when I was importing a CD into itunes fans were quietish.
I'm thinking about getting Apple to have a look at my G5 while the Applecare is still valid (it should run out in May).
Can anyone look at their Stats and see if their slot and backside speeds are stuck at similar rpms.

I just bought a new dual 2.0 ghz power mac G5 about 2 weeks ago. I set everything up and dowloaded all the updates for everything, and then about a week into using it the problem started. I left for work and when I got home that evening after the computer had been asleep all day, it sounded like the computer was taking off from a runway. It would not respond at all to the keyboard or mouse so I had to shut it down by holding the power button on the front of the unit and then start it back up. I called tech support but they had me turn the option off that puts the harddrive to sleep when possible and then turn off my screensaver. Well it was fine again for about a week and then it happened agin yesterday, not once but twice. I looked on apple discussion boards and there is alot of this happening. Well I took one guy's advice that seemed to know what he was talking about. I restarted holding the command-option-o-f keys down, then prompted the computer to reset the v-ram, and two other things he suggested to reset that I cannot remember. Then I restarted, trashed the energy saver prefs and ran a repair disk permissions task inside OSX. Well that is where I am now, and it has not done it again, but I am still trying to find out what exactly is going on here. I just spent $2000 on a machine and it appears messed up and Mac has no answer.

I want to keep my school files on desktop two so they are all in the same place, and use desktop one as a place to perhaps save photos or other files not school related. When I swipe between desktops, the school files move between the desktops as I swipe but I want to keep them on one desktop all the time.

They're still accessible through finder, but now I can't drag-and-drop anything (at all) to the desktop. It was fine a minute ago before I shut down and rebooted my laptop. Restarts and switching users does nothing. I'm using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4.

So over the last month or 2, I have been having this issue where my MBP (early 2008) will act as though the desktop doesnt exist. I can see it, everything functions normally, all programs operate fine, I can use spaces, expose, etc, but when I try to interact with my desktop, nothing works. I cant highlight folders, I can click on anything. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Anyone come across a problem where all the desktop icons disappear? I also cannot right click on my desktop to bring up a contextual menu, my machine appears to be running faultlessly apart from that. I have run Onyx to reset permissions and have checked the disk but cannot seem to find anything wrong.
Running OSX 10.10 on a quad core 2.66 Mac Pro.

This doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to create a thread about it to find out what's going on.
I usually keep my desktop empty and use it to store stuff I'm going to process in the next hour anyway.
Sometimes my desktop is absolutely empty, but when I navigate to the following path: UserDesktop, the files do show up.

Okay, I'm having some problems with my Powerbook. Yesterday, I upgraded Firefox. When re-opening after the upgrade, I had a kernel panic. I restarted my computer and figured I would be good to go. Well, after logging back in, I found that Finder was acting up and I no longer had any desktop icons. Now, clicking the Finder icon in the dock will open a new Finder window just fine. If I go to the Desktop from there, all my icons are still there. So, I decided to restart my computer and see if that made a difference.

I started up my iMac (see sig) this morning as usual, and noticed that my hard drive ("Macintosh HD") did not appear on the desktop, or in Finder windows. I checked Finder preferences to see if the option to show it was checked, and it was. I tried restarting, logging out and back in, and god knows what else to try and solve the problem. However, it still hasnt appeared.
