Software :: FireWire Devices Not Mounting?
Apr 29, 2008
I upgraded my iMac G5 iMac 2.0Ghz (standard with 1.5Gb RAM) to Leopard 10.5.2 via the original installer DVD (OSX 10.4) and a Leopard upgrade DVD.
I backed up the internal HD to an external FW drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then wiped my internal drive, which had been partitioned into 3 partitions, back into one journaled partition.
It was a smooth installation of OSX 10.4 and upgrade to 10.5 plus all necessary updaters. I let it install all the applications & settings from the previous system on the external FW HD. In the process I must have rebooted several times and my external FW drive still worked.
Once I had Leopard updated I set about tailoring my settings and UI. I set up Spaces and multiple tabs in DragThing when I got a kernel panic. I am not sure whether the panic happened in Spaces preferences or in DragThing.
Since then boot up has been extremely slow. 1m 45sec of the spinning cursor and another 4 min of blue screen before log-in. I can no longer see any connected FireWire devices (HDs & DVD burner that are OK on other machines) or my EtherNet cable connection. AirPort is still working as is my USB.
I ran DiskUtility both from the HD and the Leopard installer DVD. It does not see any FireWire drives even when running the DVD system.

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

I'm new in Mac, coming from UNIX/Linux systems, my problem is managing devices in Snowleopard OS.
Recently I bought the HP ScanJet G4050. With a lot of difficulties I installed the software, because the manufacturer provided was useless, but finally I was able to get scans into adobe reader and also into the other software.
At work we got an electric break, and my MBP continued working but the scanjet didn't. So after this failure when I'm trying to scan something, the system reports "unable to start (scaner was not found)", nevertheless the scaner works in another equipment (in a Windows XP mini laptop, for example)
I'm looking for the way to do manual mount of the device, in similar way we do this in Unix/linux:
" #>mount /device/somedevice /pathdirectory -options "
But this -for now- didn't work.

G4 IMac, 10.4. I have a simpletech 1 tbite hard drive that does not mount almost always on my machine. I just brought it home from a friends where it does show up instantly. Ran disc utility for permissions on my imac, swapped cords. Power on before boot up, power on after, unplug firewire, etc., nothing works. I want to install OS X 10.4 on the drive to try & boot up my powerbook (panic kernel message there).

My Mac Pro is not mounting any new hard drives for some reason. The one's already connected work fine and remain connected (I have three drives connected via eSATA ports). But I can't connect any drives via Firewire 800 or 400. I've tried differnt leads and different ports but none are connecting. I've tried the drive on a different Mac and it connected fine. But on the machine I need to connect to the drives simply dont mount. Nor do they show up in Disk Utility or Soft RAID. I have restarted and powered down several times but nothing is working.
Running OSX 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro (2008) The hard dirves I'm connecting are Lacie.

I do a lot of video editing, and my 1st problem is I have 2 firewire 800 ports being used, 1 for dumping footage and 1 for my external gtech drive. The mac pro will NOT recognize both at the same time, either my gtech will go offline and dismount or the camera will not be recognized in FCP. I had a 24" imac before this and I had the same issue, I could not mount more than 1 firewire port at the same time. this sucks because there are several 800 ports
2nd problem, the mac pro will NOT boot to desktop when the external drive is plugged in on startup. It will stay on a "blue" screen until i disconnect the drive and hit ESC several times... whats going on?
btw, when i connect the gtech via usb and the camera firewire, it works fine. lame... did I get a dud? or is this a common issue?

Created vuescan for my scanner, since microtek stopped making drivers. Can't figure out the problem. I can't find answers anywhere online, and I need this scanner working yesterday. I got it to work on my laptop since that's still running 10.7.3, but that's no practical. Did 10.7.4 upgrade do that screwed this all up?

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just jailbroke my iPhone 3GS and installed MyWi to work with my iPad. I also tried it on my MacBook Pro using Bluetooth. After I paired my iPhone and MacbBook Pro together everything worked fine. Now under the Airport Menu I see a separate category labeled "Devices" which is just below where my Home Network is.
My questions is how do I go about deleting this? I've tried everything. I deleted my device under Bluetooth Preferences, quit MyWi, messed around with the Network Preferences and it still appears under the Airport Menu. I even clicked connect but of course that doesn't work since I quit everything and deleted the device in Bluetooth settings. It's not even listed under "Preferred Networks" when you click on the advanced tab. It appears as "(my last name) Hotspot" and is under a tab labeled "Devices"

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

I googled it and it didn't help out as much. I have this Shure Mic and it has MIDI input and would like to have some kind of adapter to firewire. I know there is an USB adapter, but i would like to use firewire. It can be firewire 400 or 800. I like to record some songs for GarageBand.

I have a somewhat old Seagate FreeAgent external drive (like this).
It has a switchable port controller, one has a USB2 and eSATA and the other has two FireWire 400 ports [URL].
Now, on the FW controller it says "Dual FireWire 400".
What is Dual FireWire 400? And does it implicate that I can use both ports together somehow and get FW800 by that?

I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.

i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.

So far I've downloaded Toast 10 Titanium, because I heard that I need it to assist me with this, but basically what my problem is, is that I have a program that needs a CD to run it, but instead of a CD I have .iso images. Basically I need to know how to mount the .iso images onto my desktop as a CD so I can run my program successfully.

I have an iMac G4. When I insert a CD it no longer shows up on the desktop. I've checked under System Preferences and chose CD/DVD. I made sure that "When you insert a blank CD" the Finder Opens and "When you insert a blank DVD the Finder Opens".

I have a Mac Pro recently purchased that I use for video editing and I have been having a rather serious and very annoying problem. Using Final Cut Pro, I have been rendering a section of video and after a (variable) period of time, my scratch disk (internal SATA - came with the Mac Pro) just unmounts itself, causing FCP to crash out and I lose my render. I can only get the drive to mount again if I restart (or shutdown and start-up again). Is there anyone out there who has knowledge of this problem? I want to ask Apple to look at my machine, but I work at a large institution and the paperwork trail is huge, so it would be a last resort.

Ever since installing Leopard, I've noticed it is having problems consistently mounting discs, specifically my external USB drive (for Time Machine). Sometimes I plug it in and it shows up as a disc on my desktop (and viewable within Finder and by Time Machine); other times I'll plug it in an it doesn't show up any where (even after restarting OSX).
Not sure this is related, but I also noticed that a .dmg file I downloaded failed to mount (just got an error message). This time, when I restarted OSX when I tried launching it again, it worked.

I've recently installed a second hard drive in place of my SuperDrive and now use SSD as my OS drive and a regular hard drive for data. However, when running on battery I want everything I can squeeze out of my mac so I tend to dismount the drive when on battery power. Dismounting is easy, just right click and eject, but mounting it back requires going into Disk Utility. Is there a way I can place a shortcut to mounting the disk/write some script so I don't have to go all the way to Disk Utility? Even better, maybe there is a way to code a script that would automatically mount the disk when I switch from battery to AC?

the original optical drive in my G4 had been dying for a while - it would only respond to "eject" commands if there was a disc in the drive. If I inadvertently closed the drive without a disc, it would refuse to eject. It tried. It made a little motor sound, like it was trying to eject, then it gave up with an even smaller motor sound.

I've got a few purchased video DVD's that when I insert them in the Mac Pro (Feb 2008 model), it spends a minute spinning the disc and then ejects it. Other discs work fine, and these problem discs work fine in my MacBook Pro. Could this be a faulty DVD drive or some form of copy protection? If it could be a faulty drive, will Apple send me a replacement to fit myself. I don't want the hassle of lugging my Mac Pro to an Apple Retail Shop or to send it away for repair (I'd rather spend 25 to buy a replacement drive than go through that hassle!).

I have a 24/7 SMB server (RAID6) that I use for media serving via gigabit. How can I auto mount this server without doing a CMD+K everytime from finder? I want them to automatically mount upon login under OSX and show up under "Devices" right under the hard drives. Right now the way it works is, I mount it manually (6 partitions) and it shows up on my desktop. However it does not show up under devices. What I can do is individually drag and drop these mounted drives to the devices area so other applications can easily see it.

I have an annoying problem; I have 2 x 1TB Seagate daisy chained and then connected by FW800 to my iMac.
When I do a fresh boot up (in the morning usually), the hard drives don't automatically mount, I have to take the FW plug out and put it back in again.

I have a 2.4 Ghz MacBook that i bought last summer, and a 250 GB Western Digital external hard drive (powered by computer) that i also bought last summer.
My problem is that My computer will not recognize the hard drive at all. it doesn't show up anywhere, and after attempting to reconnect it over and over, it will eventually pop up, and then disappear, saying that it was improperly ejected.

how do you selectively turn on and off auto-mounting of drives? I have two drives, 1 for boot with docs etc, and the other for CCC clone back up. But both mount up on start-up. I'd be nice to only have the boot drive mount only. So I dont accidently copy stuff to the clone/back up drive. And if I want to clone to it I can use Disk Utility to manually mount.

I currently work with an old G4 Power Mac (1.25 GHz, 2GB RAM) and have to mount a FW 800 volume (WD MyBook Studio Edition 1TB) to that computer so I can consolidate to it (Avid speak for copying some data). But it doesn't mount, and Disk Utility only shows it greyed out, and there is no option to mount it like in 10.3 and following. The strange thing is, there are already two WD MyBooks Studio Edition drives connected and fully mounted. But even if I disconnect all extra drives, the one WD MyBook is still greyed out, even after reboot, which helped sometimes. I also use this drive with a 10.4.11 PowerMac G5 and a 10.5.6 C2D MBP (Unibody). Can newer Mac OS versions leave some kind of mark, so that this older Mac OS won't allow it into its system?

This just started happening within the past month or so. None of my USB drives are being recognized or mounted. They appear within Disk Utilities and I can verify and run checks on them, but they do not mount. This isn't limited to one device or any specific port. It happens with USB memory sticks, external Maxtor drives (two different ones) and now my Canon PowerShot camera. Basically anything the Mac would mount as an external drive has this issue, so I know it's not specific to any hardware.
I do have a work around that I found on [URL] -- If I reboot with the device plugged in and hold the 'command' key the drive gets mounted. Next time I try the device though (in the case of my camera plugging it into another computer) it's not recognized again. I basically have to do this reboot procedure any time I want to use any device.
