Software :: Airport Won't Turn On Without Restart
Oct 4, 2010
Whenever I shut the lid and reopen later, airport does not turn on. I cannot get it to turn on manually. Twice, it has said "Airport Card Not Installed" when I right clicked it.
Additionally, the whole mac froze up twice yesterday. Any ideas on how to refresh or clean up things?
I tried to find a utility or update, but none were found. I looked manually, and couldn't find anything. I tried the disk utility, but it came back saying nothing was wrong.

I used to have a problem with my late-2006 13" white MacBook where, if I opened up a bunch of Safari tabs/windows at a time, or a bunch too quickly, or was downloading podcasts with iTunes and opened up another internet-dependent app?my wireless connection would drop. I would still see the full signal strength in the menu bar (all four "bars" of that rounded signal monitor), but the Up and Down activity would drop to 0.
The only way to re-start the connection was to click on the signal monitor, select Turn Airport Off, and then just select Turn Airport (back) On. Only then, would the connection come back on. This was a pain, especially if I was in the middle of a big download, as I usually had to restart the whole download..................

Every time I switch on my Macbook Air, or wake it up from sleep, I lose my wifi connection. If I restart my wifi router, the signal comes back, but once my Macbook Air goes to sleep, I always need to erstart my wifi router again. This is the process I go through several times each day:
(Wifi router is on.)
1. Turn on Macbook Air. It recognises my wifi network but has no internet connection.
2. Restart my wifi router.
3. After a few minutes, I get an internet connection on my Macbook Air.
Previous laptops and desktops have not had this problem. Do I need to change any settings in my Macbook Air? I'd be grateful for any help.
I have a 2010 Macbook Air (bought second hand) running OS 10.6.8. I am using a D-link wifi router.

My DSL modem came unplugged. After that, I had to reset my wireless network. All went well (I reset the time capsule) until it was time to reset the airport express. After going through the procedure of a hard reset and a factory reset, I go through the setup steps with airport utility. At the end of which, it says "The settings for this apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem rejoining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device.
I've read about this on the forums and none of the solutions works or applies. (For example, I've got a WPA2 password protection, not WEP.) Never had this problem before today, even when I've had to reboot in the past. NOTHING has changed, except now I can't use the airport express. I'm using it to stream music, and so checked the appropriate boxes during the setup process.

Previously the problem was only restarting Airport itself, but now it's not just a reset or a logout, but a full and total restart. My wife's MB connects just fine, and my phone detects the wifi as well. It's just mine that's having problems.
I don't know if it started when I DLed Facetime or when I updated Little Snitch or when I updated Java this week w/ that update.
I thought it only happened when waking from sleep, but it happened just now while actually using Safari.

I use Belkin N1 (firmware F5D8231-4_WW_4.00.18) router to connect to Internet. For some time (it happened 3 weeks ago, although everything worked fine for about a year, I did install update of EFI firmware for Mac on that day) the connection breaks (the Airport officially is ON and does not report any problems, so is e.g. skype, but it is not, I need to turn off Airport and turn it on again for it to go online again). Sometimes it happens once a day and sometimes every half an hour.
Laptop (with Windows Vista) works at the same time (connecting also wireless) without breaking.
Strange is that when somebody uploads a file via skype it is still working although browser is not, also i can chat with people on skype, only after restart an airport browser starts to work again.

I have an external hard drive connected to my airport and when I restart my macbook pro I have to retype my password each time for the computer to connect to the hard drive.
The hard drive shows up in Finder, but it says connection failed. I then click on "Connect As" and retype my password. This works every time, but it's a bit annoying to have to do this every time I restart or change my connection.

My airport/wireless works fine most of the time, but sometimes when I close the lid, and reopen it, my airport will not turn back on. It turns on neither automatically nor through the preference pane. The button to turn airport on is clickable, but nothing happens.
I'm new to Macs, and I like them so far. But this is getting really annoying as the only way I've found to fix it is to restart the computer.

So I went to my in-laws house and for some reason I couldn't connect to their Airport/Router. I was on it once before and none of the settings were changed because I was on the router with my iPhone at that point. So I tried to turn off my Airport on my Mac just to see if that would work, and it won't turn off. I restarted my computer and nothing, still stays on. I turned off my Time Machine just to see if that was the issue and it wasn't. I will probably make an appointment with Apple and maybe call Applecare, but just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas here 1st.
I am now back at home and stuff can't turn it off. If it helps I am running Snow Leopard on my Mac.

I have a problem where anything I'm downloading stalls and the only way to start transferring anything again is to turn Airport off and then back on. This happens about once a day on my brand new MP.
I swapped out the wireless router to no effect. Anyone else seen this problem?

I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.6 GHZ. Model A1261.
The Airport keeps turning off and I can't turn it back on only after a restart, then it will work for another few minutes and then the same problem happens again.
Once it turns off when I click on "turn Airport On" nothing happens.
Will buying a new airport card help for my problem? and if yes what exactly do I need to buy.
I already tried a few other things like resetting etc. but no luck.

I was trying to access my father's wireless network while I was home for a week. I found a utility to configure for a mac (my dad only has Windows), but after running it, and it failed to find the router, my airport will not turn on. The option to "turn AirPort on" is grayed out and cannot be clicked. I have attached two pictures to illustrate. I have restarted twice to no avail.

I've got 2 wifi networks that I use in my flat. I like to use the right one depending on what part of the flat I'm in to get the best signal. They are both password protected. Lately I haven't been able to connect to one of them. When I choose it from the list of networks in airport, it just pulses the icon in the menu bar and then reverts back to the other network which has a worse signal when I am in that part of the flat. When I try to access other locked networks I get a pop up asking to enter password. But with my own network I don't get this pop up - just the pulsing icon. Further I can't even turn off airport. I try to turn it off in system preferences by pressing the turn off airport button but nothing happens.
Macbook white.
Mid 2009 version.
Using snow leopard.
Now I can't connect to either of my networks, getting connection failed notices. I know the networks are still working because my housemates can still connect with their laptops.

After I installed Snow Leopard everything has been working fine but I installed the latest Brother fax/printer driver and supporting apps yesterday Airport stopped working. So I restarted the computer but still won't turn on, no matter what I do. I'm not 100% sure if they are related but it's hard to believe they are not. I can remove all the Brother related stuff but I still need the printer driver.
Has anybody had this problem and can anybody suggest a solution?

I am using a white macbook connecting to a dlink router. Constantly, over and over and over (as in every 30 seconds or less) I have to go to the top right hand corner of my macbook's screen and click the Airport icon. I then have to click "Turn Airport off" and "Turn Airport On" for the internet to begin working again. It times out CONSTANTLY regardless of what room I am in and the only trouble is with my macbook, nobody else's. The wireless network works perfectly fine and loads pages very quickly, then stops randomly and I have to reset it... I moved back into my mom's house for a month between houses and this is driving me crazy. I can't get any work done. I tried searching and no luck.

Also, if it crashes (only happens once every few months) then it will not automatically restart. I have replaced the internal battery but this has not helped. I have also reset the PMU. Any ideas what may be going on here?

I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.
