Safari :: Hangs On Print Process - Never Stops Preparing
May 8, 2012
Safari hangs on print process. Starts "preparing" but never stops preparing. Clicking cancel leads to a continuous "canceling" which never stops. Must force quit safari.

I am trying to burn a 2GB Quicktime movie to a DVD-R using Toast 8. The file goes through the encoding process then gets stuck on 0% the "preparing" stage. Has anyone had this happen and how did you fix it.

When I attempt to verify or repair disk permissions the process starts and then stops. The following message appears in a drop down message box: First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying (repairing) on G4HD because the following error was encountered: no valid packages. My disk verifies in working order. I have used DU from the installer disk and obtained the same resulting error message. I have run Tech Tool Pro's optimization and maintenance sequences. I reinstalled Security Update 2008-003 PPC thinking it might have been the problem. This permissions verification/repair problem and a problem with my firewire external HD and iPod failing to mount started after I installed the security update. (I am not asking for help with the firewire drive problems here - that is for another forum) I am running 10.4.11 on a G4. I guess my next step is to reinstall 10.4.6, the version I bought

I have a (check sig) and just tried to install the Windows 7 RC 64-Bit onto a Bootcamp Partition. I had been using the Beta way back, but had cleared that partition in advance for a clean install. With that I had no problems...ran the 7 beta fine alongside OSX. I followed the same procedure I had done for the beta install with RC, following the guide on the internet. Everything seemed to work out peachy, Windows 7 booted fine, I added all my settings again. Then I switched over to OSX to eject the disc, which was fine although the boot in was quite sluggish. I set the boot drive as "Macintosh HD" in System Prefs, and proceeded to try to boot into Windows 7 again....this time it was no go.
The screen came up with the white cursor on black, and then the "Starting Windows" showed, with the animation above it. At some point during the animation, it just froze. My fans were at normal speed and everything. I tried many times, same story. So I thought I would shut down, boot into OSX, and try to erase the partition. That didn't work either. When booting into OSX, the start-up chime sounds with the white screen, then the gray Apple logo shows up....and that's where it stays. I reset the PRAM, no luck. What could be the reason it hangs on BOTH boot processes? Because for a short time they did both work, and I could not have erased my OSX partition or anything because I did boot into it once after installing the Win7 RC. I also can see both partitions when I boot holding Option...

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on an iMac and continuously have problems booting the machine. The boot process occasionally hangs at the gray screen, but more often it hangs at the blue screen. Sometimes it makes it to the login screen where the cursor occasionally freezes. Whenever these problems occur I have to shut down by holding down the start button, then restart again. Usually the second boot is successful. This booting problem occurs frequently, even after running Disk Warrior and repairing permissions. I don't think this is normal behavior. Has anyone else had such problems? Is there anything I can do to correct this behavior, or is this something that needs to be fixed by Apple?

I've only had my Mac for about three months after years of suffering through Windows. I'm still learning the Mac-way. A couple of times (like just now) I was reading a page on the web when the process hangs and a pinwheel pops up. On Win you could hit ctl-alt-del and cancel the operation. Is there any such combination on Mac? The only way I've found to clear the operation is to turn it off since it is not responsive to any key or key-combination I've found. I'm running Leopard on a G5 Powermac with 2GB of Ram and my browser is FF 3.0.7.

I have a white 2.0 Ghz MacBook running Tiger 10.4.8 with the latest firmware updates, and 2 GB RAM. I also have an external IDE drive partitioned as FAT32, sitting in a relatively-no-name enclosure via firewire, daisy-chained through my Presonus Firebox external audio unit (I know, not ideal for recording). The MacBook's HDD also has an NTFS partition with XP residing there. Now, it all worked great for a month now, but this week I started having a strange issue. First I noticed that the fans started kicking in even though I wasn't doing anything special. I fired the Activity Monitor up, and indeed, the CPU load was at 140%. So I looked among the processes, and one named "Mass Storage" seemed to be frozen. The obvious, but perhaps a little dangerous, thing to do was to quit it, so I did.
The CPU load returned to normal, and I was still able to access the external drive just fine. So, now, whenever I connect the firewire drive, the mass storage process hangs. I quit it, and everything goes back to normal from there. The question is.. Why does it freeze, and also, what is the whole <i>point</i> of the 'mass storage' process if quitting it doesn't affect anything? When I plug the drive in, iPhoto launches automatically, and by the files that mass storage opens, I'm going to try and track down what's causing it to hang. The last file it opens on the list is /dev/urandom. Also, now that I think about it, FAT32 probably isn't the best filesystem out there. I do need the drive to be compatible with both OS X and Windows though. I suppose I could try HFS+ under OS X, and then using Mac Drive under Win to access the disk.

So for a while I've had AT&T DSL, and it works great. But in the beginning it didn't. All the time, the DSL would lose connection or something so the dsl light would turn red on the modem. It was really frustrating, and we had multiple people come over to try and fix the the problem, but it was never resolved.
That whole time I was mainly using Safari, and it only happened when I was using Safari. Once I realized that, I stopped using it, and went back to firefox. I had no problems with my internet up till now. I tried using safari recently because I really liked the speed because I have snow leopard (I was using safari a bit while I still had cable internet and no problems). The same thing is happening again.
The DSL light suddenly turns red on my modem/router (it's a 2 in 1) while using Safari. It just happens randomly- i cold be surfing for a minute, and then it will just cut out. I have Mac OS X 10.6.2, and it has all the updates. I'm also running the most current version of Safari. I've just tried to reinstall safari, but it still is doing this.

Some program or process is opening Safari. It's not going to any pages in a window, it just opens and is on. I shut it down, and it comes back sometime later - I don't know the pattern though. how I can track this down? I'm on a 1 year old iMac 10.6.8?

I have a Mac Pro with several raid array and single drives attached (1x Wiebetech RTX600 Raid 5 through SCSI; 1x CalDigit HDElement Raid 5 through miniSAS; 4x internal drives).Unfortunately, due to various reasons (electricity outtage and software crashes), I'm experiencing system crashes and need to hard re-start the system. Upon restart, I am able to boot back into Mac OS X, but sometimes one, or both of the raid arrays will not mount. However, after a period of 0.5 - 2 hours, the array would magically re-appear again. Sometimes this might even happen to internal drives that I had mounted inside the chassis of the Mac Pro.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good osx based alternative to Process Explorer on windows - what I'd like to be able to do is graph CPU and memory for a specific process and ideally see what network connections a specific process has open. atMonitor seems to do this pretty well generally, but not for specific processes (this is for monitoring a multiplayer flash game).

MacBook hangs on certain websites (yahoo mail, cbs sports, mens fraternity) but only from one of my wireless networks. PC works flawlessly on this situation and macbook works flawlessly on my first wireless router so the problem is tied to the interaction between my Macbook and the second wireless router. I've searched the forums and tried many fixes already that have been posted here or elsewhere: Reset Safari (it then allows me to reach yahoo mail once, hangs on every try thereafter). Go to Safari preferences and uncheck the box for warning of fraudulent sites (no change) Go to advanced settings and input DNS numbers from my ISP (this solved the problem for some websites but not others) try firefox (same problem as safari) software update everything (no help) install onyx (about to do that). network is a DSL modem connected to the first wireless router (DLINK N+). Second wireless router is linksys G (the problem child) and it is hardwire connected to first wireless router.

Unexpected power loss while browsing with Safari V4.0Beta (unrelated problem) left me in a state where I can no longer run any version of Safari. I have already restored (via time machine)my entire Library twice with no effect. Other users on this iMac G5 can run Safari with no problem. This appears to be some form of intentional lock out... Somewhat like a parent lock, but parental controls are not being used. In addition, this is the only admin account (I'm the primary user) so I don't make a habit of telling myself I can't use an application. Bottom line: When I invoke Safari, the URL never changes and I am stuck with the spinning colorwheel and an empty white Safari screen.

This has been ongoing since I upgraded to Safari 4.0 in my new uMBP 17" running 10.5. Since then I've upgraded Safari to the most recent 4.0.3 always hoping this issue will get fixed. Instead it is happening more and more frequently. Because it could be a number of things I've avoided posting here about it. Yesterday I upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) hoping that would resolve it but no. At this point I can't stand it and want to throw my machine out the window. Here's the specifics. The spinning pinwheel of frustration lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute, expect after I upgraded to 10.6-- now sometimes after a minute I force quit from frustration. I run Little Snitch and always deny random things on Yahoo mail so perhaps denying some of these things cause it. I also run a lot of RAM intense software (AE, FCP) very often and thought this could take a toll, but this happens even after a fresh restart with only Safari being the only application running or even opened. I have 4Gb RAM. It's so frustrating I'll probably go back to Firefox but thought maybe this has come up before.

I have been using the MBP 2010 since it released in April. There was no problem until recently. For about the past two weeks, Safari has been hanging very often with the spinning color ball. Anybody knows how to fix the problem? I am running Safari ver 5.0 (6533.16) on Mac OS X ver 10.6.4 Build 10F569.

I have windows XP Operating System, and I have safari installed, but when I open the browser, it hangs and displays a blank white page (without finishing opening any websites). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but this doesn't seem to work. Also, when I reinstall, all of my bookmarks and reading list are in tact. (although I think if it is officially uninstalled, then none of my bookmarks should be saved). Somehow, it seems to be saving the previous state of the last Safari installation whenever I reinstall.Â

I am running Safari 5.0.6 on OSX 10.5.8. I have had this problem for the past year and has become gradually worst, on 2 separate machines. I have resetted Safari numerous times, I have repaired permission, re-booted computer, and as suggested by a Genius at apple store, re-booted in "safe booth" to clean up stuff. It appeared to work for about 1 month, until it slows to a crawl, and become unresponsive.
Problem is now it does not seem to cut it anymore. I performed all of theses operations on both My desktop (power PC G5) and my laptop Macbook (intel) again yesterday. On my desktop, Safari is working marginally, but on my laptop it is not at all. The laptop is a more recent machine, but is less responsive. When I use other browsers, like google chrome or firefox, I can surf the web no problem. How to clean Safari up to run anew again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, and Safari has been working perfectly up until this last week when I went away. I left my laptop at home with safari running, and I left the laptop on while I was gone. When I got home and clicked on Safari (the laptop had died, which closed all of my programs), the window pops up but then it freeezes and stops responding. When I click on the window, a smaller window pops up asking me if I would like to close the program or wait for it to respond, and when I select close program, another window pops up saying that the WebKit2WebProcess.exe has stopped working. I have tried starting the computer in safe mode and nothing is working. If I reinstall Safari, I run the risk of losing all of my bookmarks. What should I do?!

When I start up Safari and load my home page (google.com/ig) it takes way to long (>30 seconds). After doing some testing I found out that Safari seems to be hanging when I make secure requests. I found that out by removing the Gmail and Google Calendar gadgets from my home page and it loaded right away. But then when I go to gmail.com and log in I have to wait again. Also at that time I can't use any other tabs, they all just sit there and spin like they are loading.
Has anyone else had this issue? I know its a Safari issue because Chrome it just fine. Any ideas?
