Safari :: Can Browse Secured Sites (HTTPs) But Not Regular Ones (HTTP)
Apr 24, 2012
It seems I am able to browse secured websites and pick up my email messages using Mail and I can chat using Messages, but I cannot browse to unsecured sites on this network. I have been given a Web Proxy address, but it doesn't seem to be having any effect.

I have a client who has a MacBook Pro and yesterday the computer wasn't able to get to http sites. Only https. He has VMWare Fusion installed also and even the windows side in IE does the same thing.
The weird thing is he can ping [URL] and it pings (so we know it's not DNS), he can "[URL] 80" and it connects to the webserver and shows the HTML code (so we know it's not something with port 80). We checked the proxies setting in Network and there is nothing checked. Compared all the settings from another MacBook that is working and all settings are the same.

I have been having this problem for a while. It happens every now and then, sometimes more often too. Sometimes at random times, when I try to access https websites in Safari such as Internet banking, signing in into eBay etc, it has an error.
It says "Safari can't open the page because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server signin.ebay.com.au". To resolve this problem I always have to turn off my Airport and then turn it back on. See screenshot - [URL]
I've also tried opening it in Firefox and it also doesn't work. In Firefox, the error is "Data Transfer Interrupted: The connection to signin.ebay.com.au has terminated unexpectedly. Some data may have been transferred." See screenshot - [URL]

I can't get into *certain* secure sites. I first noticed the problem a few weeks ago when I couldn't check out at Amazon, the log-in page would not come up. Neither would any page on Amazon that is secure, i.e., requiring the entry of my password. The problem has grown. Most recently I couldn't get into Bank Of America, now I can't get into gmail. The real kick is I couldn't get in HERE!! (But I *can* get into my bank account, I *can* get into Chase and I *can* get into Citi, no problems.) The problem is occurring on both Safari and Firefox, so it's apparently not a browser issue. My ISP is Hughesnet, the satellite ISP. Now, how did I get in here and why do I suspect Hughes? Because I have a back-up dial-up ISP, Juno, and I got in here using Juno and have gotten into all of the other sites I just mentioned using Juno. Only thing is, Juno takes eons. I mean EONS. As I said, I suspect Hughes. But, I thought I'd come here and seek help from you guys, I've received excellent and much appreciated help here in the past. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, that it's not a Hughes problem, and that someone here can suggest a way I can correct w/e is wrong with my settings (if, in fact, it is my settings).Â

I cannot browse by name to certain web sites like google, yahoo. I can browse to others. This is true of both Safari and Firefox. I can, however put the ip address I get by doing a ping on the same machine into the browser and go straight there. By virtue of it being both browsers, I have ruled out the application. By virtue of being able to ping, I have ruled out dns name resolution. It's just the browser that can't get there.Â

My Safari and Chrome refuse to load https pages, as for example, on Apple servers as [URL]
If I try it using Camino or Firefox, it works, but Safari and Chrome (that is webkit (= safari) based don't.
If I just type [URL] on the URL box, Safari and Chrome tell me that the server cannot be reached. The problem is that this https page is used during checkout, so I am not able to finish any order. I have even tried firefox on Ubuntu, inside VirtualBox and it works on the same machine. The problem is just Safari/Chrome.
The problem is not just with Apple. The same problem occurs with some other stores and sites using https around the web.

I'm currently testing a website that shows users different results depending on how the arrived at the page according to their referer header. Does anyone know of a Safari extension that allows you to define referrers for different URLs? Right now I'm using Firefox and RefControl to do this but I'd like to be able to do it in Safari as well for testing completeness, apparently there is a SIMBL plugin called SafariRefManage that used to do this but SIMBL no longer works under Lion.

I'm a new to the mac world, having recently got a new 15" MBP with the Core i5 Processor.I've found some very strange behaviour that I'm trying to get to the bottom of, if anyone can help? When I have a torrent client running (utorrent or transmission), I get frequent HTTP timeouts in firefox and Safari. This happens regardless of whether the torrent client is actually transferring data. When I click on a link, in firefox I can see "connecting to www.google.com" for a long time - sometimes the link loads, sometimes it just times out. This happens 80%+ of the time.

It doesn't seem to matter what browser I'm using, but whenever I attempt to upload a file via a browser it crashes.Â
It doesn't matter what site it is, but whenever I click an "upload" link that would normally result in a Finder window popping up to allow me to browse for a file, then the browser crashes on me.Â
I'm running Safari 5.1.5 (7534.55.3), Firefox 12.0, and Chrome 18.01. . .Â
Below is the gobbledy-good that gets spat out after Safari dies:Â
Process:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Safari [45066]
Path:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
Identifier:Â Â Â Â Â com.apple.Safari

I have tried everything that I have read on how to add a site to Top Sites. With two windows open, I try to drag and drop a URL, and the "plus" sign disappears and the URL does not get added to Top Sites. I have tried the top of the page, the sides, the bottom, and the middle where the previews are. It just won't drop. Yes, I've clicked Edit. I've even tried holding the Control, Option, or Command key while dropping.
I have tried adding a site using the Bookmarks, Add Bookmark and choosing Top Sites. When I do this, it does get added to the Top Sites, but when I close and reopen Safari, it is gone - not in Top Sites anymore. I have tried totally re-setting Safari. It does not make any difference. I've tried it on my Mac mini and my MacBook. I can't get it to work with either one. Is there some trick I am missing?

I'm trying to add other top sites on Safari 4... I see it says "drag URL here to add a top site". Well, when I do that, I just get a icon saying I can't do that, and when I let the URL go on the window anyway, my top site is not added. So what the hell, how do I add a top site?

I want to be able to open new tabs automatically when I click in a top site link. At present it only opens the clicked website in the same window/tab. I've tried defaults write com.apple.safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true. This does nothing. It has worked before i updated to Snow Leopard. I must be missing something.

It seems that the Top Sites thumbnails almost never get updated. I have sites that are updated multiple times daily, and their thumbnail on the Top Sites page still show what they looked like days ago. Even when I click on one to read it and then return Top Sites, the thumbnail doesn't get updated.

It seems that regardless of how I save them, my Top Sites keep changing. What's the magic trick? Â
I clicked EDIT, then I dragged URLs into the order that I wanted. Then I clicked the BLUE PUSH PIN to save, and clicked DONE. And then it was different the next time I did Command-T.

I just reinstalled Lion on my MacBook Pro and everything is great except for one small problem that I can't seem to solve. I'm using Safari 5.1.7 and it just won't save my Top Sites. I deleted the TopSites.plist, rearraganged and repinned the Top Sites as was instructed here and here. The Top Sites do stick for a while but then they change again. I repeated this process several times and they still keep changing.

On my other mac, when I start typing in safari's url bar, it will auto-suggest pages based on the title name of my bookmarked sites (rather than just on the [URL] address url). I just got a brand new MBP and when I start typing in letters into safari's url field, it won't auto-suggest any of the names of the bookmarked pages, it only suggests based on the actual www address. How do I get it to suggest the bookmark's names?
EDIT: On my other machine I have GLIMS installed. Is this a GLIMS' feature? I was under the impression that safari did this itself.

I just got the new 15" mbp and noticed that safari top sites would scramble itself at times. I've looked around the net and seems like a normal occurrence for people with the new MBP's. My question is, what is causing it? And how do you get rid of it? Is it just a matter of turning off "automatic graphic switching" so it's running on the discrete nvidia card? Is it a software issue with flash or safari?

Has anybody been having problems with Safari's new Top Sites feature? I've had Safari 4 since the day it came out on public beta, and this feature hasn't seemed to get any better. I seriously dread having to open a new tab, because it automatically opens the awful top sites list. I close my eyes and cross my fingers and pray that I don't get the beachball of death for anywhere from 10-20 seconds. Sometimes it works quickly, especially if I keep testing it over and over. It pretty much just displays a visual of the bookmarks that I already have displayed going across the top of my screen, and I usually just click on the bookmark instead of having to hunt down the page and click on it.

I love safari. Its fast, looks great, and does everything I want it to. Outside of poor flash support (I hear macs in general are just bad for flash) everything works. What I don't like in safari is the top sites feature. I don't mind that it keeps track of which websites i visit most often, but I hate how it takes a little snapshot of every website and saves it in the website preview folder in the cache.
I didn't know you had to manually delete it and when I did it was taking up over 1.5 gb of space (/user/library/caches/com.apple.safari/website previews). I don't understand why apple couldn't have just made top sites show your most commonly visited website (like chrome or opera) and instead had to take on the website previews. Is there a way to disable top sites or at least prevent it from saving previews of websites everytime I use it?
