PowerPC :: IBook Screen Not Working At Startup / Screen Remains Black
Apr 30, 2007
My iBook will not display anything on its screen. Rather, it just remains black. One time, the screen did come on, but then shortly after booting, it flickered a lot and then went black again. A year ago, something similiar happened and when I took it to be serviced (when I had AppleCare), they had to send it away and have a new logic board installed. Now this machine is out of warrenty and and I am not sure what to do, or even if it is the same problem. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows). Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen? Or is it a software thing?
I have had my g4 for about two years and all of a sudden the thing decided that it's not going to turn on anymore. Power is getting to the machine and a certain amount of whirring is heard but not the signature! as it starts. The screen remains blank and would stay like that all night if I let it. The only thing I did differently before this appeared was to take it to work in a different bag a few times. Rucksack before, Side bag (more vibration).
I was browsing the internet, not doing anything major, put the computer to sleep, came back 10 minutes later... black screen. I messed with it for an hour or so and determined that the video card went bad (I'm guessing. It's a mid 2007 macbook pro with the nvidia geforce 8600m. My secondary monitor remains black as well). In the midst of totally freaking out, I decided to activate the voiceover utility, enable screen sharing (after figuring out a slew of keyboard commands I didn't know about), and logged in from my girlfriends computer.
I immediately closed all the windows and applications that I had inadvertently opened during the blind wtf session, and opened up system profiler to see if it is recognizing a video card. Well, it is! It's listing the video card as a GMA x3100! Is there a secondary card in there? Cause if there is, it's not working either. Or is that just a default they would put in if it doesn't recognize a video card? Doesn't seem likely. Or, because I'm using screen sharing, is it picking up my girlfriends card? It's not, because she's using a GMA 950. Maybe it's splitting the difference?
My wife has a three-year old iBook G4 and yesterday while she was doing some work, the screen just went black. By the time she brought it to me the machine was shut down. I hit the power button and it started to boot up, but about five seconds later it shut itself down again.
I kept playing with it and I was able to get back in to OS X and I played with it for a few minutes and all seemed fine. I then shut the screen and put it to sleep, then when I tried to wake it back up it shut itself down once again.
After a few more tries of getting it back in to the OS I was able to get all her files off the hard drive, but the problem is still there.
My guess is that it's the logic board, but that's just a guess.
Just bought a used ibook G4 from ebay for my sister and was giving it the once-over. did a software update and installed 10.5.3 (no backup first!). It installed ok, but after restarting it just sits on a black screen and goes nowhere. It plays the on chimes and churns the DVD drive, but then nothing. BTW, the computer didn't come with any installation discs
I was using my ibook just now, when suddenly, the screen went black, as if it were sleeping. I don't know if it was sleeping, but it would not wake up. I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. But when it comes on, I just hear the fan. The apple logo does not light up. I'm not sure what's wrong.
I slept my MacBook Pro last night and can't wake it? I have rebooted and no bing sound is made. The screen remains black. The volumn keys blip. It is as if it is still locked in sleep mode!
A friend of mine has an ibook clamshell with black marks on the screen. He sent me a picture but I really can't tell if it is a broken screen or pixels or something else.
I have a 2009-2010 27inch iMac with OSX and software fully updated. My Mac started shutting down or going into deep sleep when left on.I've tried rebooting, power long hold, checking cords etc.I've attempted the 5 second hold after disconnecting the power cord, plugging back in and start no luck.I hear a very small click inside when I long hold, sometimes a very faint spinning sound but nothing else. The fan came on once after a start attempt but nothing else happened. I can't seem to safe start because the screen remains black.
Everytime I turn it on I get a black box asking to shut down or restart the mac. I have managed to get it to turn on to powersave and managed to update the software. Thought it might help but just made it worse - it won't boot up at all now past an apple symbol with a little swirly thingy underneath (I apologise now for my lack of intelligence when it comes to computers/knowledge/names of things!) The first time I managed to boot the computer up it came up with the grey screen and a little folder flashing between a face and a question mark which I assume meant it couldn't find anything but that appears to have gone away now. I bought this computer new from Apple about 2 - 3 years ago and no disks were provided with it.
bought old 12-in. ibook A1005/2002 (I assume G3) at yard sale today. screen is black, but hard drive mounts in target disk mode on my eMac, working well! how can i get system info for the ibook in target disk mode? all i see is the it's running 10.4.11, hard drive size and used/free space. i'd like to know RAM, CPU speed, etc. secondly, what could be wrong? boots up with chime, no fan/other noise, stays on and keyboard lights work, but screen is black.
I have a problem: when I restart my Early 2008 MacBook Pro there is no "chime" and the screen remains black. The keyboard doesn't light up or respond to any input, and worse still, the "lid button" light on the front of the notebook remains illuminated, it doesn't blink, it just stays on, shining in my face. I loaded a CD into the optical drive to see if I could use the keyboard to eject it, but this test failed. Now, when I turn on my MBP, I hear the optical drive spinning and the quiet whirr of the fan inside.
I looked on Apple's support website about what to do when a Mac refuses to boot. I tried all of the methods they listed, but since my Mac doesn't respond to keyboard input, all of the techniques failed. Having exhausted everything I could think of, I decided to post here hoping someone could suggest something. I was just on the verge of completing my portfolio website and I would like to salvage my data at least.
When I open my macbook, the screen remains black (as though it's in sleep mode). Adjusting the brightness always fixes this problem, but this is a temporary fix. The brightness is not at zero when I adjust it after opening, often I need to dim the screen to reactivate it.
This problem is not: related to *clamshell mode*related to unintentionally dimming the screen. related to any of the settings in the Energy Saving panel in system preferences
Extra info: The computer seems as though it doesn't actually enter sleep mode when I close the computer.I don't think there are any processes running that would prevent sleep mode. I really just want the computer to go to sleep properly when I close the screen and more importantly, that it wake-up when opened, or at least when a button is pushed aside from the brightness buttons.
After an update(I think) I can no longer get into my computer. When turned on I get the apple logo then a grey screen that turns to black but the curser is active . Then there is no more progress to the startup screen
My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up. It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black. It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working. Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.Â
I am looking at purchasing an Ibook G4 but the description of the item includes this:"When you switch it on it begins to load up i.e. the blue screen with the Apple logo, but then the screen goes black or flickers. Said friend has kindly wiped the hard drive for me so now when you switch it on it makes the opening noise then you get a blue screen with alternating ? and the Finder logo."
I have a feeling this may have been a temporary fault with the screen connector being loose and possibly damaged. But i assume the alternating "?" and the "finder logo" is simply a lack of OS?
After moving I setup the Mini, but got nothing from the monitor. Reset PRAM & PMU, nothing. CPU chimes, etc.work, but the only thing I get from the monitor is a yellow square with a brief message indicating there's no signal.
It's a Mini, 2 MB RAM, Core 2, OSX10.5.x, it's less than a year old. The CPU appears to be OK. Monitor is getting power.
just installed 10.5.6 on their last gen. iBook. She left the iBook plugged in to the mains and came back to find that the iBook was alternating between the grey Apple screen and a light blue desktop screen where she could see the cursor. Sometimes it would also switch to a blue screen without a cursor.
I've tried holding shift during startup - no effect. I've tried rebooting NVRAM - no effect.
Ever since I sold it here on MR and got it back, there has been a problem with my 12" Dual USB iBook G3 500MHz's screen (lord, that's a long name). Whenever the screen is tilted back farther than 45 degrees or so, the backlight shuts off. I can open the casing and fix it if it's possible. Does anyone know what the problem with it is? I'm trying to get it fixed up and ready to sell back to my friend as his first Mac, and I'm trying to get every problem resolved
Just got my macpro few days ago and black screen shows at start up, sound and keyboard light will turn on Except for the screen. I dont know what to do!
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) running on 10.5.8 OSX with apple 20" display and 16G RAM.
Initially started with my MACPRO not waking up from sleep and has to force the shut down with power button. Finally realised it was due to my Epson scanner connected via USB...
The main issues now is with the display, black screen on startup. I can still control the volume and disk eject/close, just no display. Force shut down with power button numerous time but futile. Finally solved it with SMC reset.
it becomes an on and off issues... and continuously I solved it with SMC reset.... sometimes needed 2 or 3 resets to get it to work, and finally for the past few days... SMC reset can't solve it either... no display on startup, and same thing I can control the volume and disk eject/close. Have tried my monitor on other mac and it worked fine.
Now this is strange. if I let the mac cool off totally, after a SMC reset. the display will comes up fine...
Last night I was using my computer all fine. However this morning I turn it up, the white light where you push to open the lid, is on without flashing, and there is a black screen.
Please note that I have not installed any new hardware devices i.e. hard drive, ram, etc.
I tried to push the power button for like 10 seconds straight when I turned on to see if that would fix the problem but no. I can hear the hard drive starting up when I push the power button but black screen.
Could this perhaps be one of those faulty 8800 M GT nvidia gfx?
But I'm scared to take it to Apple because earlier this year, I took it apart and redid the thermal pasting and I kind of have screw drive marks on my keyboard aluminum part... It's like so obvious I opened it before. But, my 1 year coverage is already over so hope that doesn't eliminate me from getting that nvidia service in the case that it is the gfx card hardware problem?
I have been limping along for quite some time with a recurring problem with my PPC Flat Panel iMac G4.Sometimes when starting up I would get a black screen. The unit chimes at startup but the screen would stay black.I found that I was able to fix (temporary) the problem by removing the bottom plate and pushing the reset button under the base.(After shutting down and unplugging the unit.) after the startup chime, the screen turned gray with a folder icon in the center with a blinking question mark. After shutting down and restarting, this happened again 3 times. On the 4th shutdown/startup it went back to the black screen.Repeated shutdown/restarts have no effect.Shutting down, unplugging the unit and pushing the reset button is also having no effect.I hear the startup chime every time. Black screen every time as well now.Â
every morning I turn on my new Macbook Pro the screen stays black. When I move close to the screen I can see the password entering box far away, when I then type it it is booting into Mac OS X but the screen is still off. After some time, the screen blinks a couple of times and then the screen is displayed as it should and I can work all day.Â
I have resetted PRAM and called Apple Care. They made me reinstall OS X mavericks. Can it have something to do with the fact I have FileVault enabled on the disk?
My ibook G4 turned itself off and when I tried to power it up the fan turns vigorously while the screen stays black. Thats it.
Prior to this I was doing some pretty heavy music importing and during that time the fan was going nuts (I then stopped importing)...also while it was charging it the past few nights the light on the connector would go out and it stopped charging while it was still plugged in. This was the first time it happened and it happened 2-3 times.
Like for most people my entire life is on that computer along with a very important document that I need to access ASAP. What could be the issue...not the logic board!
I just had a quick power interruption for about a second while I was using my laptop. The laptop shut down and will not boot up. The screen is black. Any ideas on what is the problem?
I have an apple iBook that I bought in 2001 (yeah, its old but then Mac's are suppose to be immortal!). Lately, I have started to have a particular problem as in the screen goes black when I switch on the machine. It's not completely blank as I can see the back ground but not enough to use the computer. I have to manually adjust the screen by getting is back and forth close to the keyboard till I see the screen brightly. When I let go the screen it again turns black.
More recently even this has stopped working and when I wake my my computer first thing in the morning it refuses to show a bright screen. And I have to wait for a couple of hours for the machine to warm up and then after fiddling with the screen it finally allows me to watch a normal looking bright monitor. I am quite fed up. Am planning to show it to an Apple authorized service provider.
