Jan 18, 2010I have put a brand new hard drive in the machine. I took off the plastic bezel to the power cord, to make sure it's plugging in all the way. I turned the computer on while watching the LED's on the logic board. All 3 stayed on, and the 4th never came on.
I have unplugged it, left it unplugged for a few minutes, plugged the cord back in while holding the power, then turned it on (forgot what that was supposed to accomplish). No change.
I have reset the PVRAM (or whatever) 3 times in a row by holding command-option-p-r until I heard 3 chimes after the initial boot. No change.
I can get into open firmware, but have no idea what I could even try in there (other than ejecting the DVD).
I hold down "C" while booting, it chimes, it goes to a blank grey background, then proceeds on to the white screen with the apple. It sits there for a few seconds, then starts spinning the circle for a while, then shuts down. I hear the optical drive spin up, but it does nothing.

Mar 24, 2007I bought a SINGLE 1.8Ghz PowerMac G5 in 2003 and a little over a month later they came out with the DUAL 1.8GHZ for the same price. I wanted to die.
Is there anyway to get a 1.8Ghz G5 Proc. and just stick it in my Mac to make it a DUAL?.... or no?

Mar 8, 2007Though I love buying new stuff (and that Blackbook is so damn sexy) I just want to stick with my Single 1.8Ghz G5. I get soo fed up with the problems I face when I'm surfing the web.... which is ALL I DO!
My G5 has 1GB of memory and 160HDD and am still running 10.3.9. All I do is surf the web; so I don't want to buy a new Mac. Is it 10.3.9 that sucks... or what? I am faced with A SURPLUS of "Safari Unexpectedly Quit" signs and MYSPACE never loads right and hardly ever loads photos on myspace pages.
If it's 10.3.9 thats messing my Mac up, I'll get 10.5 the day it comes out and 1GB more of memory. Otherwise I'll get a Blackbook... but I just rather not spend that money.

Jan 22, 2010I've got an old iMac 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 that I love to use for surfing the web etc.
I'm finding that I can't view anything that requires Flash as my system (10.3.9) won't allow me to download the latest Flash or Firefox.
I tried asking in the local Apple store how I could upgrade my OS but the guy said they don't sell the OS upgrade anymore.
Is there anything I can do to upgrade my OS so that I can download newer versions of software like Flash or Firefox?
I have another computer (imac intel) but I really don't want to have to get rid of this one as I like it and apart from the OS issue, it still works fine.

Oct 15, 2009I got the 3 dreaded blinking lights on a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz. Turns out the memory is OK but it's the physical slots that are screwy.I found that applying pressure to one of the banks gets it to boot with no problem but then I remove that pressure and the Mac freezes .

Jun 25, 2010My PCI bay fan is running at full speed no matter what. The temperature sensor reads correctly in OS X, so I don't think it's a bad sensor.
Is there any way to set the fan speed manually, say in openfirmware?
It's a 1.8 DP June '04; I've ran ASD 2.5.8 to calibrate and test the mobo, which passed.

Aug 15, 2010I have a June 2004 revision Power Mac G5 (DP 1.8Ghz) with an AGP slow that is dying for a more powerful graphics card.
I have had the machine since new and have it paired with a 23" Cinema Display, Magic Mouse, BT Apple keyboard, 4GB of Kingston RAM, a pair of 500gb internal HDs, several TBs of external storage, Logitech Z2300 speakers, etc. We also have a new 15" Mac Book Pro, a 13" Mac Book, an Apple TV, Airport Extreme, etc. The desktop doesn't get a TON of use but it is still snappy enough for a lot of what I use it for.
However, since I installed Leopard on it, the OS is nowhere near as fast as it was before (with respect to UI graphics, etc).... I should have expected the newer OS would take more of a toil on the system (especially the graphics card) then did Tiger.... the system has only the factory-installed 64mb GeForce card.... I'm assuming that Leopard, probably more than Tiger, can draw from the GPU for graphic-needs/UI work and I'm assuming that a new graphics card would make a difference....
I just need help deciphering the cards that are available.... 9800XT?? X800??? Any advice on compatible 8x AGP cards would be AMAZING.
PowerPC :: Hulu On Single G5 ?
Oct 9, 2010I've recently started using Hulu (I know, late to the party...), and discovered that it does not run smoothly on my single G5. It's running 10.5 on a 1.6GHz G5 with 3GB of RAM, the stock hard drive, and Radeon 9600 graphics. The video lags horribly. The issue is not my internet connection; it works fine on my Thinkpad. Am I out of luck, or is there something I should try to patch things up? Using Firefox 3.6, for what it's worth.

PowerPC :: Single, Vertical Line/streak On Screen - Is It Fixable
Dec 26, 2006My PB/667 took a fall about 18 mos ago. It's been fine ever since, except there is a single vertical line RIGHT DOWN THE CENTER - top to bottom. It's about two pixels wide and appears to be a bright green/near white color. Any display pixes that fall on this line are not visible.
A coworker suggested that this could be fixed but didn't offer how. Have any of you heard of this sort of issue? Is it fixable?

Jun 23, 2009Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

Apr 7, 2010I had my computer idling and noticed that the fans sped up to full blast, so naturally I tried to figure out what was causing it to heat up. I quit pretty much every app I had running, no diff. I unplugged my iPhone, no diff. Even shutdown the computer, fans went right back up as soon as I loaded up OS X. So I looked at SMC Fancontrol (which I never really even use) and the temp was at 88 C!!
I have nothing open, completely turned off the computer and rebooted it to make sure that nothing running would be causing it, and it's STILL running hot as hell! Is there anything I can do to see what's causing it to run so damn hot? I really don't wanna put a crap-load of wear on my fans and CPU here.
I'm using a 2.2 ghz SantaRosa MBP running the latest version of Snow Leopard.

May 25, 2012I just noticed that there is a process named "sh" which takes between 90 and 95% of the proc all the time. I just installed all available updates, but I can't be sure this is related.
The process I'm talking about cannot be seen in the activity monitor, but I can see it with istat. In command line, I'm unable to find it.

I'm selling my mac pro early 08 and am planning on buying a 17" mbp in it's place.
I have been offered a trade of a 17" 2.8c2d with 8gigs of ram plus $500 ontop.
I was planning on holding out for a current i5 model but not sure how much difference there is considering the i5 will only have 4gb of ram.
I will be using this machine for audio. Mainly pro tools.
Any ideas or suggestions as to which route to take?
MacBook Air :: Rev A SSD (1.8GHz) Vs HDD (1.6Ghz)?
Dec 2, 2008I just got a second Macbook Air that is Rev A SSD (instead of Rev B... But at least screen is flawless...) And since I still have HDD Rev A at hand as well, if anyone is interested in asking me to do some kind of benchmark one wants to try, now is the time. (I usually don't do much of these stuff, so tell me exactly how I can do it.)
I wouldn't be holding the HDD in about 5 days, so, I can only do it in those days.
So far I like the app icon only bounce once for most of the app's initial launch.
