PowerPC :: Get Or Upgrade Mini To Have Nonexistent Bluetooth Module?

May 11, 2007

So my iBook of 4 years died last week from a bad hard drive. Today I purchased a 1.42 Ghz G4 Mini with 1 GB of RAM, 80 Gb HDD, Super Drive, and Airport, for $300 on craigslist. I got it today set everything up with my Dell Monitor and Apple Keyboard and Mouse etc.

First: Any thoughts on if this was a wise purchase (hindsight being 20/20 and all), I'm very happy thus far and will look to get a Macbook Pro in about 6-12 months.

Second: Is there anyway to get or upgrade the Mini to have the nonexistent Bluetooth module? If not, what's the best option to create Bluetooth connectivity?

PowerPC :: Random Kernal Panics QuadCore G5?

Dec 17, 2009

I've searched, but I haven't found any info on a situation like mine. I have a 2.5ghz Quad Core G5, it is outfitted with 4 gigs of ram and 2 500gb HD's. Everything was purchased in December of 2005. Over the last 8 months or I have been getting random Kernal Panics. Sometimes the machine will be sitting unused for hours and then I'll come back to it and it's locked up. Other times do not seem to have any pattern, it can be with multiple programs open, just safari, or FCP. The machine always starts right back up with no problems and typically continues to operate for hours or days before reoccurring.

I did the hardware check, and everything tested good. I switched to blutooth keyboard and mouse, and have disconnected all USB devices.I don't seen any signs of leakage.I am pretty much to the point that I assume the logicboard is bad. But I don't really know how to confirm this.

Being that the machine always starts back up and never has problems consistently I really don't know what to think. I wish it could be solved with replacing the ram and/or hard drives. But I just don't know how to determine the actual problem. All I have read is a lot of speculation.

Mac Pro :: Bluetooth Module - Keyboard Not Working Properly

Feb 23, 2009

I have had my Mac Pro for a few years now, and I rewired the bluetooth module when I first got it. I then had Airport installed about 3 months ago, and had to rewire it again because the "geniuses" at Apple didn't know the wires were labeled incorrectly. I just moved my computer downstairs and my Apple Bluetooth keyboard is not working correctly. It lags, repeats letters, etc. Upstairs on one desk, it worked fine. Down here, on a different desk, It's acting up. My keyboard is on the left middle of the desk, and the computer is on the floor on the right side. Total distance is less than three feet, with a file drawer inbetween. It works if I put it in my lap, but not on the desk. I just opened it up to check the wires again, and they are tight, and right.

Mac Pro :: Bluetooth Module - Wires Labeled Wrong

Nov 14, 2009

I have a Logitech Dinovo Edge and a Logitech 470 Travel Mouse.. the keyboard has been working fine but I've been having problems with the mouse.. I read about the Bluetooth Module and the BT,1,2,3 wires inside the mac pro and the possibility of a wire being labeled wrong. Unless the module is on the back of the motherboard, I haven't seen any wire that says BT. If the tray where the ram slots are is removed there 2 tiny wires in the lower left that says 1 and 3. No other connector for BT so I don't think thats the location. Where is this Bluetooth Module located? If I cant get this to work correctly whats the best dongle to get?

Hardware :: Finding Dual-band AirPort Extreme Configuration Software?

Mar 28, 2010

I have a simultaneous dual-band AirPort Extreme base station running software version 7.5 and can't find the software install disk it came with. I reinstalled Snow Leopard onto my mini and it has AirPort Utility 5.4.2. When I try to connect to the AEBS, I get a pop-up stating that a newer version of AirPort Utility is needed, but I can't find anything newer than 5.4.2 on the Apple download site. Does anyone know if Apple has the AirPort Utility software that works with this hardware/software available somewhere?

PowerPC :: G4 Not Recognizing 512 Module

Sep 16, 2007

When I installed it, system profiler keeps saying it's 256. I have a 128 and 2 64's in there. In the 4th slot I put the 512. I tried just putting it in (to make just 512) and it still said.

What is weird is that when it only had the 512 stick in there, it seemed faster then with just the other 3 sticks. Is it just saying the wrong number?

PowerPC :: Unusually High Fan Revving / Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5

Dec 21, 2006

I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.

I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.

I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

MacBook :: Finding Bluetooth Car Stereo?

Aug 13, 2010

Im sorry if this is a repeated thread, ive searched the internet without finding a clear answer.

I am trying to play music from itunes on my macbook (aluminium model) through my BT head unit in my car.

The way I understand it is that both the macbook and head unit have to be a2dp compatible? which the macbook didnt include as part of the Leopard build.

Im pretty certain the head unit is compatible as i can play music from my blackberry both from the music player and through the internet (youtube streaming).

I have the Pioneer deh-6100bt.

The head unit can 'see' the macbook but when I press connect, all I get is error.

The macbook does not find the head unit at the moment.

Is there something I can download for the macbook to make it work, is there something in the settings that will fix it?

PowerPC :: Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 - Upgrade Compatibility?

Oct 20, 2008

I curently have 10.3.9 with a PowerPC G4 dual w/ 1.25 processors and 2 gig of ram. I want the highest upgrade I can get that will be compatibe with my software which is:

Quark 6.5
Acrobat 7.1
Acrobat Distiller 7.0
Illustrator CS1
Photoshop CS1
Microsoft Office (don't know what version but I've had it for years)

I really can't afford to go buy all the software again and I don't want my system to crash. Any suggestions?

This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.

Hardware :: Using Airport Dual Band?

Apr 8, 2010

I recently upgraded to the airport extreme dual band II. I then moved my old extreme (N with gigabit) downstairs. It joins the network that the dual band is running to supply internet to my xbox, game PC, and ps3. The Dual band is running the newest firmware, 7.5.1 and the 5ghz network is very flaky. I have been forced to give the 5ghz a different name and use the 2.4ghz G band most the time. If I am on the 5ghz band my connection will just stop responding. Sometimes it work for an hour, sometimes for 5 minutes. Rejoining the network will make it ok again. Although last night I transferred 30gigs over the N network with no problem. It's not a distance issue since the problem is no better or worse whether I'm 2 or 25 feet away from the router. This is really driving me nuts right now. I just want to have one network setup and have the N devices use 5ghz and the G devices use 2.4 and not have to constantly worry about it.

Hardware :: Finding Bluetooth Printer For Leopard?

Dec 17, 2008

I have a new Macbook Pro with a built in bluetooth transceiver. I want to use it to connect a printer. It is a more difficult technique than it seems.

I have gotten a certain way into the problem. I downloaded and installed a CUPS driver for my HP printer from the linux openprinting site. I tested and proved the driver installation by printing over a USB cable.

I am stalled short of actually printing anything over a bluetooth link. The printer adapter is a Belkin, and the Mac recognizes it, and sees through it to the printer. But it cannot print. (The printer image bounces up and down, and the Mac insists the printer is "off line". In fact the printer is on-line.)

In other words, close, but no cigar.

I am happy to switch adapters if there is one more compatible with the Mac bluetooth.

Apple support does not have a list of printers -- nor can they name any printer or bluetooth printer adapter -- that has been demonstrated to work.

Another option might be to disable the built-in bluetooth and use a dongle instead.

Has anyone been down this bluetooth printer path? I would welcome your insights on which adapter and printer actually worked.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Dual Encryption?

Mar 15, 2009

So the new Airport Extreme has two radios and allows one to use 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz simultaneously with 802.11 a/b/g/n in various configurations on either band. My question is this, can you use different types of encryption for each band/radio or are you forced to use one for all? What I'd like to do is have 2.4 ghz running 802.11 b/g for an older iBook and my iPhone using WEP encryption. Then have 5 ghz running 802.11n using WPA2 encryption. Both will use MAC address filtering to also tighten security a little. Lastly, can the guest login also use it's own type of encryption (or lack thereof) independent of the above?
