I have an old 867 Mhz G4 MDD that I would like to be able to leave running 24/7 as a server, jukebox etc. Right now it's noisy (these things are legendarily loud) and power hungry. It won't have to work very hard. What could I do to make it efficient and quiet enough to run 24/7, without dumping a lot of $$$?
Obviously what I really need is a mac mini, but this will have to do.
I have a Vizio 22" HD monitor and it works great at 1680x1024 but don't know how to get those settings into my Macbook.
I have it hooked up via Mini-DVI to HDMI and the color is great, just wish I could get better settings. Seems like I am stuck with 1280x1024 else they are all interlaced and look like *****.
I get the following message frequently: "The operation couldn't be completed.Operation not permitted.(NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1)".I need to restart the computer inorder to access the internet.I connect via wireless and other wireless items on the network don't have this issue.

Now, I decided to transfer some of my stuffs from my MBP to this Lacie External, however, it won't allow me. It keeps giving me warning that "Lacie External Hard Drive Cannot be modified".
I had tried to modify the "Lock" property from "Get Info" but its option is grayed out.. I am unable to change it..
I a few of my albums when I do a get info the inoirmqtion is in a light grey tone and I am unable to update any of the inform ation. Luckly they still play OK.

I have a question that was sort of touched on in mac forums but never solved for someone else back in 2007. I have been scouring the net to find a remedy to my problem. I have mac os 10.4.11. I have a zipped file (final cut pro) that i am trying to open and when I try to open it i get a "unable to unarchive (error 1 - operation not permitted)" message. I followed the guidelines from the old thread for the other personIi repaired permissions but when I tried to download onyx it told me the the onyx version needs a higher OS (10.5 I beleive) than I have and other efforts to find the onyx for my mac have failed. I have also downloaded x slimmer and Xserve raid driver for people that use final cut pro.

After looking on ebay, it seems that the module goes for only $20 bucks, but the antenna alone goes for another $20. I plan on using it to sync with my Motorola Razr, so it won't be far from the computer. So, without an antenna, will it still work well enough? (or at all?)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't really use automatic backup method, because I have a few computers in the network that I go back and forth. I used a Windows based syncing program to sync all computers of Documents, Music, Photos, etc., but it went corrupt. So I'm not gonna use that method anymore.
I don't like automatic backups because I need to access the only specific files from an external hard drive. When I modify a file and put it into an external hard drive, "Date Modified" section does not change. Which worries me that the drive is corrupt. (The drive was originally used on a Windows machine.) Before I go any further in backup my files, I want to format it based on a Mac since it's primary OS.
How should I go about this?
Is there a different format for Mac and Windows drives?
I want to start from scratch.
I still need to use it between two OSs.
I'm using Mac OS X 10.6. After copying some folders from external hard drive to PC these folders are now locked on Mac. There is no pencil in the Finder's lower left corner and there are no messages appear. I just simply can't open these folders.

I recently had to create a new user, copy all apps and files to same, and then reinstall MS Office 2004 for Mac. I use a mini, 2gig Ram, and Leopard (10.5.6)OS. All my old office files have become "read only" and I cann ot modify and save w/o renaming. Is there a "blanket" way to change the Permissions to "read & write" for all my Office files? Idid not see a similar item in the FAQ's......
Also, when I open an Office application, I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library". How do I fix that?
the HD was broken so I make the change for a new one of 60GB... I dont if it?s formated or not... but MAC format... sure not!I dont have OS X now.. so I?triying to install some Ubuntu for MAC or something that could be installed if is posible to do it by USB... I'm planning of sending in my white macbook to AppleCare for a few repairs regarding the white casing (cracks) but do not want to send in my Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive.
I called AppleCare and they said they prefer it when you send in the original hard drive, for whatever reason they stated. My personal reason why I don't want to send in my 500GB Hard Drive is that I have a ton of files in there that are important and don't have another 300+ hard drive lying around to back everything up. Another reason is that my Leopard Family Pack disc I purchase years ago is at my parent's house in New York and I live in California, so getting it would be a huge hassle considering it's somewhere in boxes of storage and my folks are in Venice till the 15th of June.
Look, essentially what I'm freaking out over is that I've heard many cases that when you send in your computer to applecare, its not uncommon to get a macbook back with an erased hard drive.
I just don't wanna deal with the hassle. So am looking to avoid it altogether. Doing so bytaking out my 500GB HD and popping in the original 80GB HD that the Mac came with. I thought I had Leopard in there but when I put in the 80GB HD in the Macbook and turned on the Mac, a confused faced folder came on and turned off.
I want to send in my Macbook with the 80GB HD and that HD to have Leopard on it...so I decided to do the same method I used when I transferred everything from my 80GB HD to my 500GB HD when I first purchased it.
I used SuperDuper! application, free version...but it didn't work.
I set it up to "Copy: Mac HD to Untitled" (Untitled was the name of the 80GB since I erased it when I got my 500GB HD hoping to use it for Time Machine but never did)
I tried this twice, each time taking about 2 hours to transfer and copy to the untitled HD. I tried "back up all files" & "back up user files." But after this process was done and I popped in the untitled HD into the Mac I continued to get the same confused folder face..twice.
Any help on the matter is really appreciated as I'm highly considering not even sending my Macbook in with the 500GB HD to completely avoid any possible frustation if that HD was to magically erased.
im running mac os x 10.4.6 on a g4 powermac. ive got toast 9, but whenever ive tried to burn a cd, it gives me the following message " sense key = illegal request sense code 0 x 20 invalid command operation code" and then "couldnt set up the track for writing"
although I have been successful in burning a cd from itunes. im guessing its something to do with the settings, but im completelyey stuck.
I am subscribed to a calendar on iCal, so iCal will not let me modify any of the events that I am subscribed to (states that it is "read-only"). Is there a way that I can change the settings so that I may able to modify it? Is there something I need to download in order to make this work?

I need to modify my keyboard layout to change the Help key to sent the Insert code instead. I'm using a Citrix ICA client to remote connect to my mom's work PC (Windows XP). She uses an old DOS program that requires you to press the Insert key to enter a new order. When we are remote connected, and we press Help (which is supposed to be Insert) it still sends the Help command.
Does anyone know a way I can modify the keyboard layout in OSX to change Help (or any other key) into Insert? Even through 3rd party software is fine.

I have a 500GB Seagate Free Agent Go HD and was wanting to use it for my Time Machine back up. I cant modify any of the files when I have it connected to my MBP. But I can modify everything when its connected to my PC, so I know this is a format issue. My question is how can I reformat the HD so I can use it for my back up off of the Airport Extreme?I really don't have the money to go out and buy the Free Agent Go for Mac, and this drive was just used to transfer data from my PC to the MBP when I first got it.

I tried to change the owner of the file to another user (with admin rights) but when I type in the name of the new user, OSX tells me that the name I entered is invalid. Is this new file owner the same thing as the account names I have setup in System Preferences? If so, why would I not be able to change the user.

I followed a procedure online and have saved my Extras.rsrc and Extras2.rsrc files to the desktop, the first in PPC and the second in Intel, yet I cannot seem to move these files back into the Resources Folder. When I try to copy and paste them or insert them into the folder I get an error with a number and the message "this folder is not modifiable". Does anyone know where I can go from here to change my apple icon?

I then modified OldNameUser1's name to NewNameUser1 by: modifying the user name shown in the account's system preferencemodifying the user name shown in the account's system preference (advanced options) After renaming OldNameUser1, it's home folder is still identified as OldNameUser1. How can I modify it to NewNameUser1 ? When that will be done, will I be able to use OldNameUser1 as User2's account name?

I've made a secure PDF document by using the print method. I select Print from Firefox or whatever and then select the PDF button located in the lower left-hand side of the Print Dialog. Next, I select Save as PDF... from the list and then Security Options. In this window I enter a password that restricts modifying and printing the PDF and save it. If I open the protected PDF in Preview and try to print it I am prompted to enter a password, however, in Adobe Reader things are different. In Reader V10.1.2 for Mac The print menu option is greyed out and I can find no way to enter a password or print the PDF out.
