Apr 17, 2007I would like to upgrade to Tiger, the system is 900Mhz,has 256mb of ram, 40gb HDD and is currently running 10.2.8 (jaguar??) I was wondering if I could upgrade to Tiger using the Tiger install disks that I got with the imac c2d or is there an issue with this being a laptop and ppc ? I really dont have much of a clue about this kind of stuff with a mac, when I upgrade to Tiger I would also like a fresh install, there are no files I wish to keep, this presented a problem with my old xp laptop for drivers. Will the same happen when I upgrade the ibook? Should I format the HDD before attempting to upgrade to Tiger? If so how do I do this?
2/ I would like to install an airport card. Would I be able to install an Airport extreme card so that I can use 802.11g? Is the airport card even user installable?
PowerPC :: Upgrade Of G5's Video Card?
Jan 7, 2009I really want a new MBP to replace my aging G5 but I can't quite afford it yet. Maybe by the end of the year.
In the meantime, I was thinking about doing some upgrades to try and get me through the rest of the year. RAM is pretty cheap, but what about a new video card?
I have a G5 single 1.8GHz (2.25 GB of memory) with a GeForce FX 5200 AGP card. I'm mostly concerned with CS3 and video playback.
Here's my options:
ATI Radeon 9600 from Other World Computing?
A card from eBay? (I've heard good things about applemacanix)
A PC card and flash it? (Though I'd have to find a PC friend to do it, as I don't have another computer.)
Or do nothing and limp along until I get that MBP?

Finally i decided last week to upgrade an old Powerpc G4 733 Quicksilver (model before 2002 vers.)
I changed combo with a good Pioneer dvr-112d.
Now i'm asking u an indication: find a video card better than nvidia mx 32 installed with two important targets
1) Should support wide screen 1680x1850
2) should support core image tech in order to work better with last Tiger.
reading around i'm sure fx5200 satisfy nr2 but doesn't support wide, ati like 9600 had big problems of compatibility with my G4 model.
Pls could u point me to the right way ?
wich is the best video card compatible with a 733 ghz quicksilver ?
About Hard disk, one more question , i have 128 gb limitation.

I am trying to run CS3, and some things are extreemely jumpy. i am wondering if this is because of resolution or if I need a video card(CS3 requires a 16 bit video card), or maybe hard drive? (i have 30gb-9gb free).

Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.

OS X :: PM G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz Won't Boot With Video Card Installed
Aug 5, 2010So the other day I came home to find my powermac g5 frozen with the fans going crazy. After a hard reset the machine would no longer boot any further than the grey apple (kernel) stage. After pulling the video card the machine would boot up and I could log in using remote desktop from my laptop.
The machine ran that way for a couple of days until I got a new video card. When I put the new video card in the machine would not boot again.(The new card is exactly the same one as the old one)(ATI Radeon X800 XT mac edition).
After pulling the card the machine still wouldn't boot (exact same behavior as with the card) until I let it sit unplugged for 20 minutes or so. Also when it's not booting I can see that a little red light comes on on the logic board behind the cpu's.
Anyways I'm thinking it may be a power supply issue but if any experts wanna help me out with some advice I'd be very grateful.....

Well Today I tried using a pci video card from a g5 xserve and it exhibited the same behavior so now I know it's not the agp slot.
When it has the cards in it won't do anything except make the bong and the fans come on and then after a minute or so a red light comes on behind the processor and the fans start revving up super loud.
At first it would display up till the grey apple stage of the boot sequence and then hang.Now the display does not come on at all. When it is doing this the machine will not respond to any keystrokes etc.
When I pull the cards out all is normal and I can boot into target disk ,safe boot,whatever except I need to connect to it via remote desktop to see anything. Like this the machine is stable and will run normally. I also tried disconnecting the optical drive and hard drives and swapping the ram to see if that helped but it didn't. Of course I have reset Pram and the pmu also. Is the logic board toast? I can't run any hardware test or asd's with no video to see if there are any errors...
PowerPC :: Won't Upgrade / Hangs During Install Of Tiger
Mar 27, 2007I got this iBook a few days ago for my son, and it has been working fine until I decided to upgrade to OSX 10.4. For some reason it freezes during the install. I tried using the original Installation discs that came with the iBook and I get the same thing. STRANGE!!! I was told it was a bad RAM chip, but it only has the onbord chip so I had nothing to replace.
Apple Hardware test passes with flying colors, I have reset the PMU to no avail....Kinda at a loss here. Oh, I have tried booting into Single User mode and installing that way as well...no dice.

Well I didnt' read the fine print and BAZINGA! I noticed that it comes without a video card.
So For video editing, watching hulu and youtube and netflix What do you guys recommend.
I do have a PCI GEforce at home with 512 megs for PC and I was wondering if I could flash it and if so, does anyone know of a good walkthrough?
OS X :: Mac Pro Video Card Upgrade
Jan 4, 2011So I was given a first gen Mac Pro (2.66 dual dual-core "quad") which has taken a beating cosmetically, but hardware wise it's fine, just bulging caps on the video card: GeForce 7300GT.
This is going to be my testing and OS restore server once I get it up and going, assuming I can do that for less than the cost of a Mini Server.
On GSX the system is listed as "Ver3" so I assume that means it's a later revision that has the PCI-E 2.0 slots.
I need a new video card that will work with this system. Doesn't need to be anything special, I won't be gaming with it. Cheap is always good too. Mac OS X Server's going to cost $500, so if the price goes over $1,000 total, it's probably just cheaper to get a Mini Server. I already need to get an Airport and BT card which is about $150 total.
Apple's TSPS was completely useless at helping with this one, so hoping someone out there will maybe be a bit more helpful. So far I can only really pin down the GeForce 7300GT, GeForce 8800GT, Radeon HD 2600XT and Radeon HD 4870 as being compatible. None of which are very easy to find... At a reasonable price anyway.
So, looking for video cards compatible with Mac OS X, and the first gen Mac Pro. ATI or nVidia makes no difference, preferably sub-$150. I have searched in vain for some kind of list, and wouldn't be posting here if I had any luck, but if someone has better luck with Google than me,

May 18, 2012I have a early 2008 15 inch macbook pro. I am wondering if I can upgrade the video card somehow. It doesnt appear to be one of the "diy" upgrades that are possible like RAM and Battery replacement, but can I bring it to an apple store and have it upgraded? I have a new videogame that appears to get slower when there are a lot of objects on the screen. I recently upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB so i don't think it is my memory, and my processory is 2.4 GHz which according to the game specifications is fine. Â

Nov 11, 2008I just picked up my iMac g5 20" (2.0 GHz PPC) from the Apple Store for having the power supply replaced. Now I've lost all traces of the built-in Airport Extreme Card: When I click on the now hollow diamond-shaped Airport icon, I get a grayed-out prompt stating "No Airport card installed". Any record of an Airport Card under System Profile comes up with "No information found". My Airport Express does not show up in Network settings either.
Airport Express works fine in my Macbook Pro, so I know it's not something wrong with my Airport Express. I tried installing the "Login & Keychain Update", but can't: "You cannot install Login & Keychain Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update". Ran Disk Utility and came up with errors and unable to repair disk. The iMac was fine going in - except, of course, for the random shut-downs from a failing power supply.

Oct 4, 2009I've got a G5 quad with the pci-e slots. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7800GT already in the machine, and just picked up an ATI Radeon x1900 Mac edition to run a couple more monitors. The problem I'm running into is how do I supply power to the second card since the only 6 pin pcie connector I can find on the mainboard is going to the 1st video card? Does a splitter exist, or if I spliced two cables together would enough amperage be supplied? Both cards run off of a mini 6 pin pcie to standard 6 pin pcie cable. This may be a crazy alternative, but I've got a pc I always run right alongside the mac that has a couple extra pcie power connections available. Could I run a power cable out of the pc and connect it to the Radeon card in the G5? I saw an older thread where about midway down someone mentions successfully adding a radeon 1900 as a second card in the G5, but it never mentions the power connections. [URL]

Jul 9, 2008So my mom's G5 (single 1.8) graphics card just pooped out on us.
Lot's of multi-colored lines show up on the screen at the same time and it never boots into OS X. Ran the CD Apple hardware test and the only error i got back was the video memory. So we're thinking about getting a new video card.
It has the factory card still in it and I can't really decide what kind of card needs to be purchased. I've been hunting around the internet and have found numerous conclusions that all seem to differ.
It's basically an AGP 8x slot. We don't need anything fancy just a replacement. There's an auction on ebay right now for the current card (nVidia GeForce FX 5200) but the auction has two in it and we only need one.
but anyway, if anyone could lead me in the right direction i'd really love to get my mom's mac up and running again.
