I just upgraded my MacPro1,1 to OSX Lion. At the same time, I was having some problems with my video card and replaced it with a NVDA,Display-B. It seems to be the same as what I took out but am getting some screen artifacts as well as windows jumping and distorting.

Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.
So I was given a first gen Mac Pro (2.66 dual dual-core "quad") which has taken a beating cosmetically, but hardware wise it's fine, just bulging caps on the video card: GeForce 7300GT.
This is going to be my testing and OS restore server once I get it up and going, assuming I can do that for less than the cost of a Mini Server.
On GSX the system is listed as "Ver3" so I assume that means it's a later revision that has the PCI-E 2.0 slots.
I need a new video card that will work with this system. Doesn't need to be anything special, I won't be gaming with it. Cheap is always good too. Mac OS X Server's going to cost $500, so if the price goes over $1,000 total, it's probably just cheaper to get a Mini Server. I already need to get an Airport and BT card which is about $150 total.
Apple's TSPS was completely useless at helping with this one, so hoping someone out there will maybe be a bit more helpful. So far I can only really pin down the GeForce 7300GT, GeForce 8800GT, Radeon HD 2600XT and Radeon HD 4870 as being compatible. None of which are very easy to find... At a reasonable price anyway.
So, looking for video cards compatible with Mac OS X, and the first gen Mac Pro. ATI or nVidia makes no difference, preferably sub-$150. I have searched in vain for some kind of list, and wouldn't be posting here if I had any luck, but if someone has better luck with Google than me,
Is it possiable to get a off-the-shelf video card for the 2008 MP? I've seen that the MP uses the same graphics card as other PC computers (i.e. PCI-E)
or, do I have to get the Apple Nvidia 8800?
I really want a new MBP to replace my aging G5 but I can't quite afford it yet. Maybe by the end of the year.
In the meantime, I was thinking about doing some upgrades to try and get me through the rest of the year. RAM is pretty cheap, but what about a new video card?
I have a G5 single 1.8GHz (2.25 GB of memory) with a GeForce FX 5200 AGP card. I'm mostly concerned with CS3 and video playback.
Here's my options:
ATI Radeon 9600 from Other World Computing?
A card from eBay? (I've heard good things about applemacanix)
A PC card and flash it? (Though I'd have to find a PC friend to do it, as I don't have another computer.)
Or do nothing and limp along until I get that MBP?
I've got a mac pro with it's shell/casing seriously dented. I dropped it. Thankfully, the insides are working just fine. Since I can't sell this thing, I decided to upgrade it instead. It's got 3.0ghz xeon processor, quad-core. It's used for gaming. I've got 7300 GT Nvidia vid cards in there (3 of them). I don't even know what it's used for. ROFL. 2GB RAM.So what I need to know is the following:
1.Other than the dreadfully heavy heavy Mac pro's standard casing, is there another case I can replace it with? What would be compatible?
2.I want to upgrade my RAM to the max. Is it 32GB or 64GB? What is the cheapest type of RAM I can purchase without losing much performance?
3.What is the latest video card I can use with my quad-core? which is compatible?
4. Is quad-core 3.0ghz xeon, a good computer you think? or shall I just forget the upgrade and spend the money to buy a 16 core or something, while I just need the pc for gaming?

I have a early 2008 15 inch macbook pro. I am wondering if I can upgrade the video card somehow. It doesnt appear to be one of the "diy" upgrades that are possible like RAM and Battery replacement, but can I bring it to an apple store and have it upgraded? I have a new videogame that appears to get slower when there are a lot of objects on the screen. I recently upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB so i don't think it is my memory, and my processory is 2.4 GHz which according to the game specifications is fine. Â

I upgraded operating system to Mavericks, since then all footage I export from FCP as a QT movie has artifacts. I'm using FC 6.0.6. I have the settings optimized for download in the settings options ad data rate at 3000. I have been exporting like this for years with footage looking same as in FCP timeline. Mavericks doesn't work with older programs..I only downloaded the thing so I could run Da Vinci Light, it screwed up my mail system too.

These are artifacts show up mostly when I use Safari. In fact when I CTRL T for a new a tab that's when it's the worst. I'm gonna apologize in advance if this was already posted, but I'm not quite sure what the technical phrasing for this issue is, so I could've missed it in search. I'm running a Macbook Pro 17', manufactured around September 08. It's currently running OS X 10.5. I received it from my school with the computer already set up and all the software pre-installed, so I personally don't have access to things like the boot disc and other base software, but I can get a hold of it if it's necessary. The crash: Somewhere along the boot-up process, or somewhere soon after boot-up, the computer will freeze and a bunch of pixels will rearange themselves. I wish I could show a screenshot, but the best way I can describe it is that these little jagged stripes of pixels will move to places they aren't supposed to; for example, below the little spinning boot-up circle on the initial boot screen, there's a block of pixels kind of shaped like --.--_ that pulses darker and lighter in time with the pixels on the bottom of the circle, so they just seem to be transposed from another position on the screen. If this happens during boot-up, which is most of the time (on the screen with the dark grey apple on a light grey background), then the computer will try to boot up for a while, then the artifacts will run in stripes down the screen and a window will come up telling me to restart my computer. Sometimes--usually when I've shut it down and taken out the battery and let it sit for a while--it'll get past boot-up, and I'll get either almost to the desktop or even get a couple minutes of actual use before the artifacts appear again and the computer freezes.,......
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had my 27" iMac (3.06GHz) for a few weeks now and yesterday I noticed some weird artifacts appearing on the screen, very randomly.
They will pop up all over the screen but if I "Show desktop", they will go away for a bit but sometimes reappear again in different areas of the screen. I restarted the computer but that only temporarily fixed the problem.
Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?
I have an iMac G5 (rev. B with ambient light sensor) which has suddenly started having a problem where the entire screen is covered with pink artifacts. The iMac had been left on overnight and when waking up in the morning I found the screen looking like this and now it continues to stay like this no matter what I do. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was using Audacity on my mac running 10.4.11, on some seriously large files (85MB mp3s were exported from these original wav files!), when during this these red vertical lines started popping up on my screen; mainly where a window had been moved. These lines haven't gone away and I'm not sure how to fix this problem. I'm stumped! Having repaired permissions and run the Disk Utility from the Install disk, I'm at a total loss. The intro/gray screen, apple logo doesn't have the red lines, but every other screen does.

I've had my Dual 2.7 G5 since early 2005. It has been a great computer for me over the years. Noisy as hell, but great. A month ago my screen started to distort every now and then (see pics below). The computer would freeze when the screen distorted. Then when I would reboot, the distortion and artifacting would occur even at the grey boot up screen and lock up. With enough reboots it would finally get back to the desktop and be fine for a few days. This no longer works anymore. I haven't successfully booted the computer in over 2 weeks. After the distorted grey boot screen it will go black and all you see is the artifacts, never getting to the desktop. Is this a dead video card? I'm running the stock AGP Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT. If this is a dead video card, do you have any suggestions for the best AGP replacement. I'm looking for something powerful. All I'm finding are very pricey 256mb cards. I'm willing to pay for a powerful card.
View 23 Replies View RelatedOk so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.

I see here that my Mac Pro (Early 2008) is compatable with:
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600
ATI Radeon HD 4870
It looks like in many cases there's two versions, and the mac version costs about 10x as much on ebay and in stores. Is that accurate, or is one of these models mac and pc compatable, and therefore the laws of supply and demand work in my favour?
(fyi: I just want the cheapest one, I don't do heavy GPU work)
