my powerbook g4 titanium hard drive was makin weird noise and then it died and I can't get into operating system. now when I power on my laptop it only shows now a square with a smile face and a question mark. if I buy a new hard drive on ebay how do I install the OS on the hard drive? is it hard? will I be able to install it by myself? is there a website with the steps how to install the OS?

It's possible to fix? I read that reseting power management, but doesn't seems to work. It's is possible that leopard is causing this? the battery problems begin when install leopard.
I've got a 15in Titanium Powerbook which I've had for about 4 years and can't see any reason to change it. I'm running OSX 10.3.9, 867Mhz processor, 1MB L3 Cache and 1GB SDRAM. I'd like to get an external monitor, at least 20in, maybe a 23in. I have a few questions though.
1) A fellow mac user said my PB might struggle to power the larger monitor due to the older graphics card. Is this true?
2) If yes... are there any upgrades I can do to allow me to buy an external monitor?
3) If its fine, any recommendations on monitor? I can afford the 23in Apple Cinema, but I don't like spending money for no benefit. How are the other options compared to the Apple? IE Dell/Samsung etc.
4) Anything else I should check/know before purchasing?
5) Any recommended UK sites? If I go Apple I'll go to Regents Street, but what about other options.
I'm looking to get this titanium powerbook but it has a broken screen, possibly bad backlight? I can get it for a good price and I would love to have it to replace my ibook. I don't know the specs for sure but I am positive I think it's the DVI version since it has the keyboard that looks like the ibooks(same placement for the keyboard release latches).The guy said it worked fine on an external monitor but just recently he said it won't boot now and it now makes a high-pitched whining sound. Anyone know what that is? I'd like to use it as a headless mac until I locate a new screen for it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm going on a day long driving trip with my kids later this week and I kludged together a good solution of bungee cords to hold my titanium PB to the back of a seat so I can play movies for them. I got a Sony car inverter that seems to output an appropriate amount of power for the PB. On a test drive around the block with the DVD running, the PB seemed to get pretty hot, but otherwise worked fine. Is there any reason why I shouldn't go ahead with this setup? Anything I'm likely to wreck?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using my trusty powerbook 500 mhz and when i closed the screen while the machine was on, after @ 1/2 hour i opened the screen up and NOTHING!. i restarted and nothing again, the caps lock key will light up, so i am assuming the power supply is ok. No chime and black screen, any suggestions on what it might be...im thinking logic board, if so what ones will fit that model

And I purchased a NexStar CS 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 external case. But the connections don't match. What do I need to do? Do I need to buy some sort of adaptor? View 2 Replies View RelatedA few months ago it was dropped and would not boot past the Apple screen. I presumed it was faulty from the fall and instead of repairing it I figured I would just buy a new computer.
Anyway I have just purchased a new MBP 13" and I'm trying to get everything off my old laptop. It is going into target disk mode but the MBP isn't picking it up.
It is finding it in the disk utility but its just showing the beachball. To make matters worse I can't boot from a CD as the Superdrive is just chucking out CD's (guessing its bent from the fall).
Guessing its dead and Im going to have to try and get it data recovered, just seeing if there are any other ideas?
A while back I bought an external hard drive for my PC, but then ditched the PC and decided to hook up the hard drive to my Mac. My External Hard Drive is a: 149.1 GB WDC WD 16 00JB-00GVA0 The problem is, I can access all the information but it will not let me do anything on the external harddrive (Like creating a file, copying and pasting a file on there, etc.) However, I can save Torrent downloads on the harddrive, but they do not show up on the actual external hard drive. But, when I press the "Find/Show directory" button in Bittorrent it does find the files. Is there something I need to do, Or is it just incompatible with my Mac?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a new Mac user for about 6 months now. I bought a used PowerBook G4 15" 1.25 ghz notebook that was in good condition. It was well cared for by the previous owner. Only thing she had done was update the ram to 2 gigs.Recently I began to notice it running slower, programs were freezing and Garage Band couldn't run as many tracks. I installed recommended software updates before it started to get slower and I thought maybe that was the problem.So I attempted to do a fresh swipe of the hard drive and start from nothing. I saved some files and then tried to run the software installation cd. It didn't really help at all. I can't remember the error but it wouldn't let me reinstall OS X even when I held "c" when starting up. At one point I must have clicked run in target mode because I booted it up and it showed an unfamiliar screen. Then I restarted it once again and saw on Disk Utility that S.M.A.R.T. said something about hard drive failure.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old Titainium powerbook which I was going to give to a friend to access the internet whilst he is at work, only problem is that it does not seem to want to start. If I press the start button I get a distorted sounding start-up noise then nothing (not even a grey screen) The caps lock light lights up but nothing else.
If I press the re-set button on the back then the power button it starts up fine and works without any problem other than having to re-set the clock and date. I thought it might be a problem with the pram battery so I have just changed this for a new one, but its still the same. The main battery is dead but thats OK as it will be used on the mains adaptor.
My Titanium powerbook was running when suddenly the screen went crazy, flashing colors and bars, then went blank black. Now can't boot at all, even from external drive. If I hold down the start key I eventually get a faint humming sound and the little "alive" light at the bottom of the display bezel flashes for a short time. If I repeat this it takes at least 15 seconds to happen. I have turned it off for a while and even removed the battery but nothing changes. Can't afford a new one, need help to fix it.

Unfortunately the PowerBook in question (12" G4) belongs to my mum who lives a fair distance away, so I've not been able to do any 'hands on' diagnostics. Basically she was using the machine yesterday when it randomly started emitting a high pitched squeaking/scratching sound (she described it as screaming though, bless). She called me and I asked her to turn it off - gave it a couple of minutes and asked her to try turning it on again. When she did the computer immediately started making the same noises (even before the startup 'bong' sound). Today one of her friends who is a little tech savvy took a look at it, and figured it must be the hard drive. Fortunately he was able to retrieve all of the important data from the computer whilst enduring ear-splitting screeching.
1. Does it sound like the problem really is the hard drive? It does to me, though I'm not an expert - however would hate to waste money on a replacement drive to find out that wasn't the problem in the first place.
2. Is it worth replacing the drive? Any idea how much it would cost to replace the disk? Is it something that could be done by myself, or would we need to find a specialist repair person to do it? Would it likely be more cost effective to get a new laptop?
The money issue is pretty key as she's in something of a tight spot at the moment, so trying to find the cheapest solution that will get her computer working again asap. As she lives in a rural area and is housebound her laptop is very much a lifeline for her, so would be good to get it sorted.
My girlfriend has a 17" G4 Powerbook - she recently bought it second hand. It's one of the late models, with a 1.67 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM installed. It runs like a dream, except for one thing - it has a propensity to freeze occasionally. They're not kernel panics - they're hard freezes, where everything locks up completely. Can't move the mouse, can't force quit, nothing - the only thing to do is switch off and on again. I've looked through the logs and can't find any crash reports, so I'm at a loss to what's causing this. The only lead I have is that it only seems to happen when the machine's running on battery - it's never frozen when the power cord's plugged in. I thought it might be overheating, but it froze this morning after only 5 mins of use, so now I'm stumped.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
I have a powerbook 12' 867 mghz, I know I would rather have a new one, but not ready to give up on this old gal yet! Anywhoo I thought the logic board was fried but after letting the powerbook "rest" I came back months later and sometimes it will boot but as soon as I try to do anything it freezes, so maybe the harddrive is fried? How do you get it to ignore the internal drive so it will boot from an external?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi turn on my powerbook, after about 10 minutes a loud vibration along with noise comes from what i am sure is the dvd drive, and crashes my finder (computer). there is no disk in the drive and I have tried using it with a disk in the drive, but the same thing happens.my warranty is well over, i just need it to work and don't need the dvd drive.so, my question:is it possible to disable or remove the drive from the computer and it still function?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's the rundown: my uncle gave me a pristine Powerbook G4 Titanium edition. Good computer, 15.5" screen, definitely worth keeping. He wiped the thing clean before giving it to me. The problem is the internal CD drive is super flaky and won't take an bootable CD well. It took my Tiger bootable once or twice and bonked out during the installation. Now, I can't get anything. BUT, I have a nice external firewire 400 CD/DVD drive. I hit option and can see the disc, but the PB won't take it. Also, of course I hit C on startup to try and load from the CD. Hasn't taken since the first few tries.
