PowerPC :: IBook G4 Won't Boot Past Apple Screen & No CD Boot
Jun 11, 2007I have an iBook G4 1.07 GHz 30 gb 256 RAM with Panther. It was working fine until my HD got close to being full. Now I can't get it to boot past the Apple screen. It will either freeze there, or move on to the blue screen and freeze before the progress bar enters. I want to re-install Panther but I can't get any CD to boot during startup by holding "C", including the Panther OS CD, the Hardware Test CD, or the Tech Tool CD. I am able to boot to single user mode, where I type fsck -fy, and I recieve no errors with the hardware. I had this issue beore and my HD had to be replaced by Apple.

Oct 17, 2010Got a Powerbook G4 with a "messed up" HD. Couldn't fix it, so got a firewire drive and ran a bunch of utilities from my newer intel iMac. Cloned the Powerbook's drive to a USB hard drive, did all repairs on the USB drive, formatted the Powerbook, cloned the USB drive BACK to the Powerbook, but it just gives me the flashing question mark when I try to boot.
What is REALLY weird is I can boot my iMac FROM THE CLONE ON THE USB DRIVE and it works fine.In Drive Genius the Powerbook drive (in TDM) shows as a single drive, but if I go to "Repartition" then it shows 3 smaller partitions on the drive; I believe they're called "Apple Free Space" or something like that (can't check right now, I'm running Repair on it AGAIN at the moment).
I feel like I'm missing something simple, like the machine just doesn't see one thing that tells it "Oh, yeah! There's an operating system on this drive!" I have tried partitioning from Drive Genius and Disk Utility. Have done clones back and forth with Drive Genius, Disk Utility, and Carbon Copy Cloner. Same results each time.
Software :: Installing Old Leopard Alternate Boot With Snow Leopard
Oct 17, 2009I have a tower Mac Pro with Snow Leopard running on it.Unfortunately one of the software that I use doesn't have yet a Snow Leopard update. So I am thinking maybe I can install older version of Leopard on one of the internal drives (i have 3 additional internal drives), so I can boot my computer from either Leopard or Snow Leopard, depending on needs (i don't want to get rid of Snow Leopard).
I never installed OS X system before, so I am a bit scared.The internal drive is ready, I have the old Leopard on disks, what are the next steps to take?
OS X :: Using MacBook Pro To Install Leopard On IMac -- Won't Boot From Leopard DVD?
Feb 24, 2010I have:
-one iMac with cracked screen -- currently being used via dual monitor setup
-one new MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard)
-a legitimate, family pack DVD for Leopard
I want to:
-reformat the iMac and install Leopard on the iMac via Target Mode/firewire using the DVD drive on my MBP
However, when I try to boot the MBP from the Leopard DVD, nothing happens.
I know this is kind of a mess, but it's the only viable solution I have been able to come up with. I can't install Leopard on the iMac from the Leopard DVD because I can't see the screen (due to the huge crack on my iMac) and it does not show up on the extra monitor.
Is there a way to safely force the MBP to boot from the Leopard install DVD?

Oct 20, 2010My PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz won't boot up. It happened about a year ago when I first got my new MBP so I just let it sit. But I'd like to give it to a friend if I can get it to work. I've tried resetting the PMU by holding shift+control+option+power... waiting 5 seconds and powering on, but nothing happens. The battery appears to be functioning correctly. When the cable is in it lights up like normal and the battery indicators light up and are in full charge. I've taken the ram out and put it back in. Any other clues what I could try before bringing it in to Apple?

Aug 28, 2006I opened up Garageband, went into preferences to configure the audio for my peripheral audio device, and the computer and curser locked up, so I had to shut it down by pressing the power button for 4 seconds. I restarted the G4 and it would only boot up to a blue screen with the pointer curser, but would not finish loading anything on the desktop, no icons, no menu, nothing. I tried restarting repeatedly this way, but got the same result each time.

Oct 8, 2007My friend just got a 800 Mhz iBook G3 from someone. I think it's the April 2003 model. It has a CD-ROM drive so I think it's that one. The iBook has Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on it. The problem is that in normal boot, it hangs right before the "Starting Mac OS X" screen with the bar. The mouse pointer just stays in the corner. The computer can boot into Safe Boot. He tried reinstalling the OS with Archive And Install keeping the same settings but it still does it. Apparently he says that he had to boot into the Mac OS X Install Disc in safe mode by holding shift. Starting the computer holding Option and selecting the Install Disc caused the installer caused it to hang in the same way. He is currently doing another Archive And Install with the keep settings box unchecked and has yet to do an Erase And Install.

Jul 14, 2008A while ago, I got hold of an old Power Mac G4 (450MHz, 128MB RAM, OS X10.3) which I haven't dug out until now. As it contains the old owner's data, I thought the best thing to do would be to do a clean install of Tiger. I bought a Tiger DVD set and upgraded the RAM to 1GB but the DVD won't boot. The DVD is mounted in OS X and I can access the launch screen which has a button to restart and upon restarting, OS X just boots again.
I have tried pushing C and Alt (I have a Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard as the Apple one has been misplaced - Could this be the problem?) but nothing appears on the the display for a while, then OS X boots. I have also tried setting the Startup Disk to the Install DVD which doesn't work either. I was also thinking it could be the DVD-ROM drive as the button to eject is in the center whereas the drive's eject button is on the right (so I am guessing it isn't an original part)
PowerPC :: Froze Up And Won't Boot
Sep 11, 2008Basically, I have a 12" 1.33ghz powerbook that's progressively gotten worse over time. The problem started occasionally with the clock drifting and the computer freezing after waking from its sleep. After booting, everything would be fine again and the problem wouldn't happen for a couple weeks or a month. But then it got worse, where it would freeze but wouldn't boot after the first try. This went on for a few weeks, where now it won't even boot anymore. What I get is the boot chime followed by the grey screen without the apple icon. I can still use the reboot key commands, but that's it. Has anyone had a similar problems, know what might be happening or have an idea of how to fix it?

So I have 3 128mb PC133 memory sticks, and when i put each in the powermac individually (as the only mem stick in the computer), they work fine.
However, if i put any more than one stick in the computer, it will turn on but not boot up or display anything.

Aug 9, 2009Recently I got a broken G4 cube. I am trying to figure out what the problem is. The previous owner cut the original IDE-cable. So I replaced it with just a standard IDE-cable. Maybe that's the problem, I am not sure. Everything is connected like it should be, power is on, but it doesn't boot. This is what happens. The moment I connect the power supply, it starts booting, I hear the superdrive spin up for half a second, after that it will go dead again. This repeats itself about a 1000 times. The cinema display is connect through ADC, but doesn't do one thing!

Dec 3, 2009I just set out to initialize the drive of my old G4 800 DP, using the system disc. Everything began fine but when I returned the screen was black, and video wasn't being picked up. I decided to force reboot and start over, but now I cannot get my mac to boot at all. Black screen with no video. Cannot boot from firewire target drive. Machine won't recognize system disc. When I boot there is no chime. I hear the machine apparently working hard to read the system disc but nothing happens and it eventually ejects the disc. I've tried 3 different discs, so I know it's the machine not the disc. Pressing "option" at startup has no effect. I also know it's not my LCD, as it works fine with my other machine. Anyone have any idea about what's going on here and what I can do to regain access to my machine?

Feb 12, 2010I have a powerbook g4 that won't boot...I initially would get a kernel panic error after the apple loading screen, so i would reset and just kept getting back to the error. I searched through some forums and tried resetting the pram, now after the loading screen the screen just goes black (computer is on, just plain black screen). In looking through forums I read that the kernel panic is usually a hardware error; I have a new macbook that i got right before this powerbook stopped loading (at least got everything copied into the new one ) and my husband had been using the pb for the last few weeks, mostly just watching tv online...nothing strange. he got a few kernel panics the last couple days, but he would turn off and i'd open it just fine in the morning. he mentioned the screen had started flickering a few times...and now on the gray apple loading screen - the only actual image that the computer loads - the little apple also flashes between it's regular gray color and like stripy/blocky blue squares...could it be a monitor problem?? I found a bunch of "powerbook not booting" forums, but none mentioned the flickering screen...It'd be nice to know what's going on and fix it, if possible.

Jul 5, 2010I have a problem with my old G4 MacMini wich I use for my mp3's/torrents/webserver.
I was ripping all my audio cd's, when all of a sudden my MacMini froze.
After a reboot I heard a clicking noise coming from the HDD so my conclusion was: dead HDD.
After ordering another 40GB ide HDD, I managed to install Tiger. Everything seem to work fine. But the moment I rebooted, I got this nice gray screen (again) with a logo flashing from a small finder icon to a question mark.
Things I've tried:
- I tried to reboot holding 'C', but that didn't work.
- PRAM reset (holding down the power button when inserting the powercable, and pressing power again). Didn't work.
- I've switched the 3V battery with an old PC motherboard battery (new one underway).
Unfortunatly I don't have a wired Mac keyboard, so I don't have the 'CMD' button (Win keyboard). I do have a bluetooth keyboard, but I assume BT connection is only made when the OS has already started.(second hand Mac keyboard with wire is underway).

Oct 6, 2010I just recently purchased a powerbook g4 (1.33 12 inch) from PowerON Services. I turned it on for the first time and I was prompted to update to stuff ( osX being one of them) It then froze while installing the updates.
Now It wont boot, it is stuck on the grey screen. I tried loading from a tiger disc that I have but that didnt work. I just get a funky message saying to hold the restart button. Any words of wisdom??????
also note i tried resetting PRAM and tried booting in safe mode.

Dec 26, 2010i purchased a power mac G5 recently which broke after 2 days- it was bought from ebay. i sent it back to the seller who "repaired" it. It arrived today in the post and didnt work i oppend it up to see the hard drive had crack during transport, and the conector pins where bent and unconectable.
I made a clone copy of my macbook that should be bootable using something called carbon copy cloner, i now want to boot my power mac g5 from the external usb hard drive. This just apears on the screen with a folder and a question mark flashing. What can i do or is this possible.
