PowerPC :: Possible To Make Three G4 Cluster?
Aug 4, 2006I recently acquired 2 PowerMacs 1 for free and the other for cheap. One is a Dual 450mhz and the other is a Dual 500mhz. So now I have 2 dual 450mhz and a dual 500mhz. Is it possible to make a three g4 baby cluster similar to what they did with the giant G5 cluster at Virginia Tech?
How would I do it?
Would it harness the power of all of the processors?
Would it only be useful only for large computations, or would it speed up any and all tasks and apps?
I am just a designer, and think it would be a fun thing to try to do. I have visions of making some sort of antiquated giant beast of a mac. At the very least I figure I could use the three of them together as a heater in the winter!

Mar 19, 2009Just got my new macbook pro last week, been having some problems ever since i changed my ram to Kingston 1066MHz DDR3, supposedly to be compatible with the MBP.
I have experienced horizontal lines of flickering and freeze of my entire system, which requires me to do a hard reset. I have recorded a video of it here.
I have also experienced similar type of freeze, but the screen pixels just cluster together at the top 20% of the screen, much like this.
I have ALSO experienced my keyboard totally not responding when i try to recover from a password saved screensaver!! The mouse is working fine, but the system just can't detect any keystroke input, forcing me to shutdown forcefully again!
I don't have time to send in my MBP as i need to work on it, and cannot do without a machine, any ideas how to resolve this?
May i also know which rams are compatible with Mac?

Nov 20, 2010I have an opportunity to get a Late 2009 27" i7 (2.8 Ghz) for $1699. I've been looking at the $1999 i5 (also 2.8 Ghz). I know it has a 1Gb Video Card, compared to the 512 MB one on the 2009 i7.
My basic question is, is the i7 worth the lesser video card and cheaper price, compared to the i5 with a stronger video card?
I do a lot of work in Photoshop and iMovie, as well as Illustrator and inDesign. I also will be playing TF2 heavily, and heard that the i7 was great for video and gaming. I'm in the market for an iMac since my Late 2006 Macbook Pro is on the verge of death.

Aug 25, 2010I recently got my 3.2ghz mid 2010 21.5' imac. I noticed that its been getting really really hot on the top on the top left and right corners of the computer. Usually i am watching tv series (.avi) files on it using quicktime and vlc and i checked the temps reaching these as follows

and the fans are at

are these temps okay? or is htemachine over heating for the activities i am doing, usually i amjust msning, and watching tv series.

I do have one concern that SSD is supposedly much faster than a conventional hard drive and although a solid state drive is now pretty pricey, they will come down in price and I suspect become more mainstream over the next couple of years.
Does it make any sense to consider swapping my computer for a late 2010 i7 refurb (+ $200) so that I have an upgrade path to SSD in the future?

Aug 11, 2010I searched the forums but can't seem to find a definitive answer in regards to having a loose hinge on the i7.
I picked mine up yesterday and it seems a little too lose for my liking. It stays in place when it is not touched, but if you push with one finger on the bottom it will switch quite easily.
Is this how they make the hinges now or is mine too loose and should be exhanged? I don't seem to have any problems with dead pixels/yellow screen/noise and would hate to exchange it.

Aug 15, 2010I ha e 2x2gb of 1066 ddr3 ram sitting here. I am going to buy an iMac. I can't decide between the refurb 27 core2duo, the refurb 27 core i5 or the new 21.5" i3. Of course I am torn between cost and performance. I would prefer the bigger display but it's not necessary. If I could use my existing ram in the new 21.5 that may put it as the winner but I am unsure if I can mix 1066 and 1333 ram or not. If not then I will probably get the refurb 27 and then it's just to decide between i5 or core2duo

Sep 12, 2014I have a 2010 iMac that won't start when I press the power button. No chime, no fan running, nothing. I tried unplugging it and plugging it into a different power source which made no difference. I made sure the power cord connections are good. We recently had an 8 hour power outage at my house and this is the first time I tried to power the iMac up since the power outage (it was working fine prior to the power outage). Of note, my husband's iMac started up fine after the power outage.

Oct 26, 2010I have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.

Sep 29, 2010Has anyone tried using their mid-2010 imac with hdmi and can confirm if audio (out) works? All the adapters seem to claim audio support with the refresh macbooks but do not mention iMAC. On the Apple store they sell a moshi adapter that lists iMAC support but specifies early-2010 models. Is apple deliberately crippling the new iMACs to *not* allow audio over displayport>HDMI or what is the real story? Some older support threads seem to talk about it working on their 2009 imacs until they upgraded to os 10.6.4. I have tried a few generic cables/adapters but they don't seem to talk audio to my receiver. Anyone had better success?

Nov 14, 2010I've got a 27" imac i5, with 4 RAM slots. I do actually have 2x2Gb installed, but that's not enough to run windows 7 smoothly with Parallels.
I would like to upgrade the RAM. Can I buy 1x4Gb now, and add another 1x4Gb later? (short on money at the moment...)
The two original modules are installed in BANK 0/DIMM0 and BANK 1/DIMM0. Should I install the new module in any free slot available?
Another question: is this memory fine?

If not, maybe i'll buy a new iMac.If it supports SATA III then i found the Corsair Force 3 480GB 2.5" SATA III SSD for a reasonable price. Do you recommend that? Does all the SSDs on the market work with mac without problem? I also want to upgrade my 4GB of 1333MHz memory to 8 or 16. There are 2 empty slots right now. Can you please make a recommendation about it too.

Apr 15, 2010I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?

Aug 19, 2010after months of going back and forth I finally went with an entry level iMac which is perfect in every way. I think... I don't remember the start up time taking almost a minute to cycle from the blank gray screen to gray screen with the Apple on it. The only thing I've done since Tuesday is add two songs in iTunes to test the cd-rom drive. I just ran the extended Apple Hardware Test and everything is fine. Given that my 20" refurb died within 3 months and I returned 2 iMacs prior that one, I'm a little nervous. Is this normal for a Western Digital hard drive to take nearly a minute start up from gray screen to grey screen with the apple?
