Power Mac :: PCI ATA Expansion Cards For G4?

Apr 2, 2012

So i bought a PCI ATA expansion card for my G4, but the bloody thing won't work. Despite having a Mac logo on the box, the drivers for the card are only compatable with Windows...

My question is, are there any PCI ATA cards around these days that are Mac compatible and dont cost an-arm-and-a-leg?

Mac Pro :: How Could I Power 2 Graphics Cards In (First Gen)

Feb 27, 2010

I'm currently working on completely migrating from my PC to my Mac (having kvm switches here and there has got very tiresome and I'm now very much restricted for room.) So I've set up boot camp and I am able to dual boot between OS X and Windows 7. I have two graphics cards currently sat inside the Mac, 1 ATI 4870 which I use with Snow Leopard, and a GTX 280 (which I've pulled from its water cooled environment in my PC) to use in Windows.

Now the problem, I use OS X exclusively for productivity apps like FCS3 and Adobe CS4, and wish to use Windows preliminary for recreation and games, which is where my GTX280 comes in.

Currently I have both cards in the machine, naturally OSX doesn't detect the 280, and I am fine with that. In windows I am able to utilize both cards, Windows detects both cards, installs drivers for them and works no problem running games on either card (preferably the 280 as it's relatively more powerful)

But that's with the aid of an additional PSU to separately power the 280 as the 4870 uses up both of the 6-pin PCI-e sockets on the Mac Pro Logic Board.

My real question is, am I able to buy two 4-pin molex y-splitters (still allowing the power to the DVD ROM drives), and then using the spurs to connect those to a '4-pin molex to 6pin PCI-e connector'; with addition to getting two 6-pin PCI-e Y splitters and connecting the 2 spurs to both the 4870 and the 280 via 6 to 8 pin PCI-e connector? -- Yeah the 280 is a power hugry card!

I've contemplated this myself knowing that the Mac Pro as a rated 1KW PSU, what concerns me is the PSU rails. Even if I can get these connectors to wire up the 280 with the built-in PSU, I don't know if the PSU's rail's will be able to provide the current required.

Mac Pro :: Install 2 Video Cards That Use Power Cables In One?

Apr 22, 2012

I have a Mac pro 1,1 model and recently upgraded the video card to a Saphirre 6870 card. It works great right out of the box on both Mac and pc side of my Mac pro. From my online research, this card seems to be the best card that works with my mac pro so far, however I plan on getting an even more powerful card to use exclusively on my windows partition for games. I want to get a 6970 card, but that one may not work on the Mac side, so I plan on using both cards (the 6970 for the pc side, and the 6870 for the Mac side). There are two ways that I think may be possible but I wouldn't know how. One, is there a switch device that allows me to switch between cards without having to disconnect and reconnect them every time ? And second possible way, is there a way to house the second video card externally with its own power supply? The issue if that the are not enough power connections for both cards, so is there a way to power one card externally?

OS X :: Power Mac Dual G5 Dual Video Cards

Nov 2, 2009

I have a Powermac Dual G5 @2.0ghz, with 8gbs of ram, and 2 1tb drives running the latest version of 10.5. The problem I have is that I have 4 LCD monitors that I was using with my PC. I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. Please help, I cant go on using this awesome machine with only one 19inch LCD. and I cant afford to buy new monitors

Mac Pro :: 2009 Model Expansion In Windows?

Sep 23, 2009

I would rather not have to sell my MacPro, but for some financial reasons, I may have to. The specs of the machine are in my sig, but if I can get these add ons to work in Windows, I think I can sell my HP HDX instead. Anyway, I know these cards wont work in OS X, but would they work/ fit if I used them in Windows with Bootcamp? [URL:...] Since it's only PCI e x1, it won't work will it? Can anyone suggest a tuner that will work inside a 2009 MacPro in Windows? I am not a fan of the elgato, so that option is out. [URL:...] If this sound card won't work can you suggest another one? My situation is to get rid of the HP and use my MP as my HTPC/ Work PC, or to sell the MP and my 24" ACD for a new iMac when they come out and then build my own HTPC since I have a New Egg preferred account and could put the money off for a little.

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 - External HDD Partition Expansion

Sep 1, 2014

I have NTFS Paragon installed on my mac and I have recently purchased a 4TB Seagate expansion external HDD.

I wanted to change the name of it so when I plugged it into my TV, the name would come up correctly. It didn't work by just clicking on it and renaming it, so I tried erasing it and restoring with a new name.

My problem now is this;

Now that I have reformatted the HDD, when I plug it into my TV it always shows up as having two partitions...

Seagate Desk (1) (Usually around 399mb)
Seagate Desk (2) (Remainder of space)

When I plug the HDD into the Mac, it doesn't show up as two partitions, only when it's plugged into a TV (and possibly a windows based PC, not sure). I also had the same problem a while back when I tried to reformat a USB thumb drive using disk utility...

PowerPC :: IBook - Available Memory Expansion Slots

Aug 4, 2007

The other day, I put more ram into 2 12-inch ibooks - my own 1.0 ghz, and my wife's 1.33 ghz (Yes, I know she has the faster machine. It means I'm the next to upgrade). Anyway, this is the first time I had opened them up at all and I saw something that confused me: I know that ibooks have only one available expansion slot for ram. That's what I saw on mine. But on my wife's, it looked like there was a second slot lower down, just below where I installed the ram, but missing the clips to hold the ram in place.

Is this in fact a second ram expansion slot, or is it just the shape of it that makes it appear to be one, or is it a second slot that is somehow unsupported or unable to be used? My guess is that it's just the shape of the hardware, and it only appears to be a second ram slot, but isn't really. But wouldn't it be sweet if there was in fact another usable slot in the ibook?

Applications :: Apple Address Book Functionality Expansion

Feb 26, 2009

Does anyone know if Apple is working on improving Address Book? It seems that not much has changed in a long time with the Address Book. It is a nice app for keeping up with personal contacts. However, do you think that Apple will develop it further to be more like Outlook, in terms of features that can be applied for business use? Please let me know if this is being worked on or if there are rumors. Outlook 2003 is turning to dust in the wind, and I am not that satisfied with Office 2007. I am hoping to move away from those products, but Apple's offerings pale in comparison to Microsoft's.

PowerPC :: Seagate 1TB Expansion Drive Formatter Failed

Jul 22, 2010

I bought a Seagate Expansion Drive (1 TB) a while ago, and have been trying to format it for use with my Mac Mini. I have tried "Disk Utility" several times - once zero'ing out the drive, once DOD'ing it (but that would have taken more than two days, so I cancelled that op.) - and by simply clicking on "Erase" and setting the 'volume format' as the Mac one (journaled) - Each time it has failed and the message I get is "Drive Formatter Failed." Dodgy drive? Dodgy Disk Utility? I'd like to be able to use the drive with some video in Final Cut Pro that I'm going to be working with.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Bands In Pictures Printed From Preview (due To Image Expansion)

Mar 25, 2012

When I print a color picure from Preview, areas of medium color like an evening sky show bands about one inch wide. parallel to the print head movement direction. So one inch tall band will be lighter, the next darker. These are subtle differences, but ruin the print. I've contacted Epson who told me to try all the things I had already tried e.g. clean, calibrate, & align printer, new Epson brad ink, etc. They said if that didn't work it was the computer, or the cable, which I find unlikely. So I then tried printing from Gimp and Picasa, which did not have the problem, but also printed at the correcct size instead of expanding the image to fit the paper. This happens with both small images 320X231 as well as large ones 1600X1200

I read a comment in the community written in 2009 that said "After you choose File -> Print, under the "Orientation" section, about halfway down, is a drop-down menu. Choose "Preview" in there. After that, use the Scaling options to get it to print the size you want." I tried that but it  doesn't change the size of the printed image. I also tried fiddling with the image size on the Tools menu but that didn't help. It seems like the only way to shrink the image on the paper is to change to a smaller paper size, which is a workaround. Are these bands being caused by the expansion of the image? It's being blown up about 60%.Background: Preview version 5.0.3, OS 10.6.8, printer connected directly via USB.  Printer is Epson Workforce 633

Mac Pro :: 2 Out Of 3 Gfx Cards Discontinued

Jun 15, 2010

- EVGA GeForce GTX 285
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 and
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.

The first two have suddenly been discontinued - they were available at least a couple days ago, so it could've happened during todays store update. I have checked the UK store, they're still available... can't check the US store right now cause it's down again. [EDIT] US store up - they still have them for delivery[/EDIT] Anyway - what do people think this means? (Aside from us Aussies getting the short end of the stick again

I was annoyed when I realized it... I had a PCI card in my G4 with four USB2.0 ports and was hoping to migrate it to the G5 but, apparently not. Unless there is a 'trick' to make it work... like making the 9600Pro work in my old G4 using tape and covering up pins etc.

Mac Pro :: Two Graphic Cards Works Together?

Dec 29, 2008

I just bought a new MacPro last week (and really love it). I asked the people at the store to replace the standard graphic card with the Nvidia GeForce 8800.Apparently they 'forgot' to take out the original ATI Radeon card.Reading through the forum I found out that the two cards don't work together. No sweat, since I originally only wanted (and paid for) the Nvidia.

Here's my question: which card does my mac actually use? Does it always use the better Nvidia card? Should I take the ATI Radeon card out, or leave it there just in case I ever want to use 4 monitors?

IMac :: Looking For Graphics Cards

Feb 26, 2009

I'm thinking of getting myself a Mac. I have not decided on much more than this. Well, a few things have been sorted. I'm either going for a MB 13" as a nice little e-mail and surfing companion or I'm getting the next iMac. If I would go for the latter then it would have to serve as a gaming platform as well and preferably for a couple of years.

Since gaming will be a good part of the duties performed by the dear little thing I must ask what we could expect in terms of graphics cards?

I'm aware that Apple often use last generation GC in their computers so a GeForce GT 120M is probably out of the question.

Mac Pro :: Effect Of Two Video Cards

Mar 8, 2009

I have a Mac Pro and two video cards, and am upping the setup to a new Nehalem Mac Pro with the ATI 4780 card + NVidia GT120 card. For illustration purposes, I will use those two cards to frame my question, as we seem to be pretty familiar with their specs by now. My question is somewhat conceptual, and is difficult to explain, but I am counting on the MR collective intelligence to sort it out! I'll use a few scenarios to illustrate my point: Scenario 1: Heavy use of the 4870 card, using both outputs (two screens). Naturally, performance is better than using the GT120 card.

Scenario 2: Same heavy use, but this time one port from the 4870 is used, and one port from the GT120.

Scenario 3: Same heavy use, but both ports on the 4870 are used, and one port on the GT120 (three screens total)

Scenario 3: Same heavy use, but both ports on the GT120 are used, and one port on the 4870 (three screens total)

How do software applications deal with two video cards? Would running Aperture, FCP, gaming etc., degrade just one screen? Wouldn't the whole application have to slow down to accommodate the lesser card? Is there a "primary" card and a "secondary" card designation? I'm thinking of multiple monitor setups (three, for example) where a lesser card is necessary to drive the extra screen, but the application is using all three.
