MacBook Pro :: How To Reformat Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive
Jun 24, 2014I recently purchased a 3TB Seagate® Expansion® external hard drive for PC. My plan is too reformat it so that I can use it, but it has been acting wierd on me. It says on Disk Utility that it is 4 gbs but I have a 3TB one. Im on OSX mavericks by the way.

Jul 22, 2010I bought a Seagate Expansion Drive (1 TB) a while ago, and have been trying to format it for use with my Mac Mini. I have tried "Disk Utility" several times - once zero'ing out the drive, once DOD'ing it (but that would have taken more than two days, so I cancelled that op.) - and by simply clicking on "Erase" and setting the 'volume format' as the Mac one (journaled) - Each time it has failed and the message I get is "Drive Formatter Failed." Dodgy drive? Dodgy Disk Utility? I'd like to be able to use the drive with some video in Final Cut Pro that I'm going to be working with.

Jan 11, 2010New IMac user. When I bought my imac I explained to the guy in the shop that I'd always been a PC and didn't want to loose everything I had amassed in the past 20 odd years. He sold me a Seagate 1T external hard drive and told me to rip everything off my PC and transfer it to my Mac, so far, so good. The problem I have is that I cannot delete, modify or add to the external hard drive, I can only view it and copy items.

But for the Mac, it only works when directly connected and is not recognised over WIFI - the drive is not listed under devices. It did when I first started the drive yesterday, when I managed to copy all my files onto the external drive via WIFI. But not today. Perhaps related to the software update I ran last night?

The last few weeks it's been acting up, it's been really hard to connect and it usually takes a few trys, it transfers files REALLY slow, slower than normal and sometimes it doesnt even transfer them, it just stops about halfway through.

Apr 8, 2009I got a Seagate 500GB external hard drive recently. I'm looking to delete files from my Mac after I back them up on the external hard drive. I tested this with one picture and after I deleted the picture then backed up the hard drive, the hard drive 'erased' the picture. I did talk to Seagate and the guy said it wasn't actually erased, it just went into history. (Although I can't find history and forgot to ask :/)
So, my question is - How can I put files on the external hard drive then delete them from my Mac and when I later back up my computer, keep the files on my external hard drive that were previously deleted from my computer. I know the files will be in history but I'd like for all of them to be in one place instead of searching through history for maybe one file here and there. I hope this makes sense!!! (I have Leopard OS)

Aug 7, 2010I think I have a slight issue with my 7200rpm 500gb seagate drive. Once or twice every hour it seems to stop and start up again. Kinda klicks. It causes my computer to freeze for about 3 seconds. Whats causing it? Is it faulty? I should also mention that it didn't do this when i first got it. This is the model without the SMS.

Jan 14, 2009I have purchased a Seagate 500gb 2.5 inch laptop hard drive to replace my feeble 120gb drive. I am trying to set up this drive using carbon copy cloner before changing it over, I'm using an external enclosure for this. The problem I'm having is the hard drive isn't recognized at all.
It's not showing up in finder or disk utility so I don't know how to format the drive.
I'm using Leopard 10.5.6
The instructions that cam with the enclosure mention setting the hard drive to function in master mode, what does this mean? I don't want to go to all the effort of changing the hard drive if there's some sort of problem, and I would rather clone my drive before removing it too.
IMac :: 1TB Hard Drive (Seagate ST31000528AQ)/Unable To Shrink/partition?
Jul 23, 2010So I tried to partition my 1TB Seagate main hard drive that's in my iMac, and twice my iMac locked up at the "Shrinking volume" stage. I tried to shrink it down from 1TB to 600GB and it not only did not work, my system locked up (I gave it plenty of time) to the point where I had to forcibly shut it down and a subsequent verification of the disk revealed that it needed to be repaired using Disk Utility after restarting and booting from my OS X installation disk, which worked just fine.
I decided to try again, because the first time, I had not restarted the computer in a while, so I thought I'd "flush out" any temporary files, cache, inactive RAM, and whatever else might have been in the way the first time around. However, this time, the screen simply turned off after 15 or so minutes. Once again, it got stuck at the "Shrinking volume" point and there was also no way to revive it except for a forced shutdown, which, by the way, I did by holding down the power button on the back of the iMac. Same story, I had to restart and repair the disk using my OS X installation disk, which resolved the repair issue.
One more thing. I remember that when I first received my iMac, I was able to partition the drive in order to add a volume for Boot Camp, which I formatted in NTFS right before my Windows 7 installation. All of that worked great and I was actually impressed with how flawless that whole process executed. Eventually, I decided that I no longer needed Windows 7, so I erased the partition and re-consolidated it with the main OS X partition, again, without any problems.
With all of that said, I'm not sure what to try next, but I would really like to create 2 additional volumes. I thought I would try using Disk Utility again, but this time, booting from my OS X installation disk. Then again I didn't want to chance it again, as I have not made any backups yet. I'm in the process of making a backup right now.
So what do you guys think? Should I try to do just that, using Disk Utility after booting into the installation disk? What do you guys think is the reason as to why I can't just resize and partition using Disk Utility after a regular boot-up like I was able to before? What else could I try? Any third-party software titles like I used in Windows? Acronis and Partition Manager come to mind. I'd rather do it in OS X, though.

I want 80 gigs, 5400rpm and an 8mb cache, and have basically narrowed it down to either: Western Digital wd800ve or Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST980815A Does anyone here have either of these drives running in their laptops?

Mar 18, 2012It was under my understanding that on a laptop Lion will continue to take snaphots even when it is disconnected from the drive it uses to store time machine backups. However I have a message back up failed, when I opened the time machine preferences I see this;
So I went in to the options to see what items are being excluded from the backups and lone behold my local drive is marked as to be excluded. The problem is it is greyed out and I can't remove it.
Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I try to look enter time machine there is nothing present. The only time I can see my backups is by holding down the option key and selecting browse other backup disks. Is there a library file or something I can delete without loosing my past backup history?

Mar 28, 2012Time Machine is not working correctly since installing Lion. I found (from using Adobe Bridge) that there seem to be automatic back ups being made 20 times a day and onto my hard drive! Usually I back up to an external drive specifically for back up using Time Machine. Now time machine takes several hours to back up when I have that disk wired in (with USB) and the Time Machine icon in the Apple menu is always showing that the back up is delayed.
