OS X :: Zap PRAM - Repair Permissions & Run FSCK?
Sep 20, 2004The idea for this quick GUIDE was thought up in this thread by kingjr3. Like the networking thread the idea of this is to have a quick point of reference for those common questions. How to Zap PRAM Zapping PRAM is simple, just reboot your Mac and hold down "Command(the Apple key)+Option(the Alt key)+P+R" while it is booting, when you hear the startup sound for the seond time the operation is complete, and you can release the key combination. Now just let your Mac boot as normal. How to Repair Permissions
- Navigte to "Applications > Utilities", and open up "Disk Utility".
- Select the volume where your OS resides, and hit the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
If you are comfortable with using the Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app), you can also enter this command to run repair permissions - "sudo diskutil repairpermissions /" (without the quotes), just enter your password when prompted. How to run FSCK
- Restart your Mac holding down "Command(the Apple key)+S" key to enter 'Single user mode'.
- Type "fsck -f", and hit return.
- Once complete type "reboot" and hit return to reboot you Mac back in to OS X as normal.
If there is anything that you think is wrong here, or you think I have missed any vital steps out, please post and let me know so that I can ammend this.

Mar 21, 2012I am running Mac OS Lion (10.7.3) on a 8-core Mac Pro. As I turned on my mac this morning, I found out that I was unable to use my wireless mouse, and also that I couldn't open my bluetooth settings. Apparently, the entire module disappeared from the System Preferences, and when I went to one of the articles on here, I saw that I'm supposed to reset my PRAM and SMC in order to make my bluetooth work again. The problem is, that I don't know what PRAM or SMC are, nor do I know how to reset them.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Permissions Not Being Reset In It
May 5, 2012I need to reset the permissions on my 10.7.3 lion software. Apple support has escalated this to software engineering levels and have not been able to give me a resolution. For some unknown reason all of a sudden my permissions would not allow me to properly move files to the hard drive. Also it would not allow me to take and move files around with the hard drive, it would just perform copies and not moving files to these locations - these were unexpected actions that were happening within the system.
I have worked with Apple support and have reset the ACL's using a root user this has still not resolved the problem. apple keeps escalating this issue up to higher levels of software engineering department however it takes 2 to 3 days every time to reply to me and this is unnerving.

Jun 5, 2012It seems my system has reset something so admin-level users have read-only permissions for a pantload of files and folders. In every "get info" box the generic "admin" user has read-only priveleges. I can't stop and change permissions every time I want to work with a file.

Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Corrupted Startup Volume - How To Reset Permissions
Jul 1, 2012Running 10.7.4, MacBookPro Mid 2010. Â
After hardware failure (read heads on HD gave out. AppleCare replacement of HD. Third party data recovery and reinstall on my new HD.) I connected new Ext HD for Time Machine, and Time Machine has corrupted my startup volume.Â
Took to the repair shop and they said the Time Machine preferences file was corrupted, which left all my system drive data in a read-only state after backup. They trashed the pref file, and reset the permissions/read-only flags on my startup volume.Â
1) How do I reset the file permissions myself? (so I can nuke my Time Machine backup, manually back everything up, and manually recreate my entire system drive?)
2) Do you think since the data recovery place (Apple Authorized BTW) rewrote all my original data to the new HD, some "random" corruptions were copied over? Or is this a problem with Time Machine? (Which is why I want to do a manual reinstall/restore.)

OS X :: Repair Permissions Isn't Repairing Permissions

When running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, it reports that there are errors and that it's fixed them but if I run it again, the same errors keep appearing.
I've noticed that the current permissions on the errors are lrw-rw-rw- which I assume means that they are symbolic links and not the actual files which Disk Utility is expecting. Any idea what's going on?

Jun 2, 2014Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)
Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM
Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9Â
Additional info-
Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.
NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.
Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.Â

I have tried to repair the HD and tried to repair permissions using the Disk Utility. he issue started out as the flashing Apple/Question Mark Folder/"No" sign. Jan 20, 2009I have a 17" Powerbook G4 1.5 GHZ. I lost all sound from one moment to the next. System preferences says Audio output Headphones however no sound from Headphones either. I tried to reset my PRAM, however when I hold down "Option" "Command" "r" and "P" the computer won't restart. The hard drive seems to be stuck at this point and won't go any further. I went to the Apple store and the Genius lost patience and said we should send it out. (I'd rather not)
I have also reset the PMU
Everything else works fine.
I've looked at several other threads and post. Everyone with a sound problem seems to be able to get it resolved with a PRAM reset. However I find nothing on my the problem of not being able to reset..

MacBook Pro :: PRAM Reset Not Having Any Effect
Sep 7, 2014I have inadvertently left my 2011 MBP running with a processor intensive music app running. The battery ran out before i realised.. When i attached the power lead to charge it, the computer automatically restarted without even pressing the power button. The computer had not entered safe sleep mode, presumably because my music software was still running.Â
Since then the computer will not ever enter safe sleep when the power runs down. The battery just cuts out each time when it drops to less than 5%, it does not run out at 0% like it usually does. if it is the logic board battery because i have had this issue a couple of times before but it rectified itself after a few days. I have checked that safe sleep is enabled which it is, but the computer just cuts out before safe sleep kicks in.

Power Mac G5 :: Blank CDs Not Mounting -trying To Reset PRAM
Nov 30, 2007I have tried two different brands of blank CDR in my drive and both times, they fail to mount and in Disk Utility, show up as Sony DVDs (neither of them is a Sony or a DVD), but not writable. I have no problem with media that already has content. I've tried resetting PRAM, but nothing else yet.

Feb 25, 2008I tried the SMC & PRAM reset. Now, there is a delay in my keyboard and mouse. For example as I am writing this, as I type, I am observing a ~1/4 sec delay between me pressing a key and the GUI registering it. The same with the mouse. I can click-and-hold over say File and move it up and down over subsequent menu items and it the GUI doesn't highlight the menu item unless I slow down the movement.

OS X Mavericks :: MBP Will Unable To Boot WITHOUT PRAM Reset
Aug 22, 2014Updated to OS X Mavericks last week. Ever since, it has been experiencing boot problems. Â
- If I restart my Macbook Pro (2011 13", lowest model), it will sit at the grey screen with apple logo and spinning grey wheel forever. I notice that my HDD is NOT running (no clicking / writing sounds)Â
- If I restart with a PRAM reset or holding down option to select Macintosh HD boot, the hard drive starts to run (I can hear it) and it boots successfully... it takes 5+ minutes to boot up. The grey screen with apple logo is presented on my screen for about 4 minutes, then the login screen shows up but I cannot move my mouse or select a login user for 30 seconds. After this, I can log in succesfully.Â
-Also, switching users takes 1+ minutes. Clicking "switch user" freezes my screen.

MacBook Air :: Why Have To Continually Reset PRAM To Boot
Dec 2, 2014Recently my MacBook Air has failed to wake from sleep mode. The Apple illuminates on the back of the screen casing, but neither the screen nor hard drive actually wakes up. The only way I'm able to use the computer is by forcing a PRAM reset on restart (command-option-P-R). I've had to do this several times in the last two weeks. Â
The only things about my MacBook Air that have changed in that time period are:Â
- I installed OS Yosemite
- I installed and ran Sophos Anti-VirusÂ
(The latter was installed to counteract a problem that I was having with my email address having been spoofed and sending spam. Sophos found two bits of malware in email data files and "cleaned" them up.) Â

Aug 22, 2010Today I noticed that my mid 2010 MBP is not automatically sleeping. I ran Apple's extended hardware test, along with TechTools Pro 5 from AppleCare disk. Both passed. Reset the SMC and PRAM. I'm still not able to auto sleep. Is there a way to see what exactly is causing my computer to not automatically sleep? Console messages or something?

MacBook Pro :: How To Reset PRAM/Start Up Sound Loud/Implications?
Jul 9, 2009I recently purchased a 13" 2.26 stock macbook. It's perfect, screen is good (no scrolling issues or purple blues) with no dead pixels, no slanted keys, and no scratches.
I updated the firmware that addresses the SATA 1.5 issue. After the update, I reset PRAM. I held down the buttons till I heard the second or third startup bong.
Here is where it gets funny.
Now, when I reboot or start up my computer, the start up noise is loud. Even with headphones plugged in and also the volume turned to its lowest setting (even with volume turned off). Eventually, to control the startup noise, I had to install the startupsound program in my system prefs as mentioned on other threads and that has seemed to control the startup sound.
I was wondering, if by resetting the PRAM if I have harmed my computer in any way. Should I be worried about deeper issues with my computer since the startup sound was not previously being affected by reducing the volume to zero with headphones plugged in?
