I have been having problems playing .avi files with my computer. At first it was running 10.6 and after being upgraded to 10.7 the problem is still there.
I have been trying to install different codecs -- Perian(1.2.2 & 1.2.3 and uninstalled DviX first), flip4Mac, etc, but everytime i try to play an avi file with quicktime player X, it says that quicktime player can not open the file 'A required codec is not available'.
I have also tried to open the file with Quick Player 7 and VLC, the strange thing is that the video 'plays' (the sliding bar is moving), but i see no video in the application window -- it was just all black.

The underlying issue here as well is that iDVD won't recognize this file either.
My wife works for a TV station and one of the editors at the station put a video file together with Final Cut Pro and put it on our external hard drive.
The file is just over 3 gig and won't open in Quicktime. It WILL open in VLC, but I need to get it in a format that iDVD will recognize because I created a DVD menu for this video and want to add it to my DVD project.
I have some other videos she recently brought home as well in the same .mov format but they are smaller, around 800 MB and those will not play in Quicktime either, but they are recognized by iDVD when I try to add a video the DVD project.
I'm guessing I'm missing a codec here and have tried a number of them but nothing seems to work. I was able to find a free converter that converted the file to .avi and it would then open in Quicktime, but there was a logo added to the video which makes it basically useless to us.
So my questions are-
1) Is it simply too big a file for Quicktime to play? What is the max file size it will play?
2) Is there possibly a codec I'm missing here that I haven't tried yet?
3) What else could the problem be?
When I'm in finder or on my desktop I'm able to hover above an MP3 and it brings up the option to play it without opening itunes or anything. However when I'm in the documents folder in the stack at the bottom next to the dock and I hover above an MP3 it doesn't give me that option. You have to actually click it to open it in itunes or another program to listen. Is there a setting for this? Is it possible to have it just play there the same way as if it was on the desktop or in a finder folder?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have close to a hundred music files that won't play, they have no file ending (.*). They were transferred from a now formatted computer (no way to recover). I have no idea how to get them to work. If I give them an AAC ending RealPlayer will give me the following information but it won't play them. Since it tells me the length of the song it must somehow recognize it.

I downloaded a movie which is a avid file just recently on my mac (which is a standard macbook NOT pro)
But it wouldnt work in quicktime so i download 2 different programs to play the avid file but all of them seem to only work if you have a macbook 10.4 version which i dont.
Is there any program that i can download to help run the avid file on my macbook or to change the avid file to something else so i can run it on quicktime?
Has anyone seen a question mark using Quicktime?
I have recently purchased a 21.5" iMac w/ATI GPU for my work computer, and I am trying to play an avi file in Quicktime. The file is coming from the Windows program 3D Max, and has an avi file which has worked on all my Macs except for my new iMac that is running Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know if this a Snow Leopard issue or Codec problem? I have already downloaded Perian, but have had no luck in fixing my problem.
Has anyone else experienced the '?' covering the Quicktime icon like I show in the attached pic?
i have a movie that was on bluray 720p and it was a MKV file so i converted it to AVI so that i could stream to my ps3 from my mac using medialink and when i tried to play the file it wouldn't work from my ps3 but worked from my imac. It had a error code
I bought an mp3 and although the file plays in QuickTime or other media programs, the mp3 will not add itself into iTunes or even play it on either a Mac or PC. I've attached my settings (Windows, but my Mac settings in iTunes are the same) and I don't know what's wrong with this file.
It's frustrating because it's just an mp3 file (from everything I gathered from the meta tags/information) and I've never had any trouble adding files into iTunes by just double clicking on them but for some reason this is different.
I received an email .wmv attachment. Is there a Apple application that can play this file type?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an .mpeg file that says it is 29.97 frames per second, but when ever I press play, it plays at about 23.976 frames per second. I'm trying to convert the file to an .mov file that is 23.976 fps and plays at 23.976 fps, but every time I try the result looks choppy. Does anyone know how I can convert a strange file like this to a proper, 23.976 fps file, preferably an .mov?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded an .avi file and the sound won't play. It said the audio was in dolby ac3 code 8192 and I would need a plug-in. I tried converting to DivX and playing through Flip & that didn't work either. I tried placing the file in the library>audio>plug-in>component folder & that didn't work. There is no Quicktime folder to place it in.
