The original message was too long, so here is a shorter version. Suppose I have the following file structure: Joeirthdayphotos. I want to type, "photo, joe" to get me to the "photo" folder. Is there a simple way to do something like that?
--- ORIGINAL MESSAGE ---
Spotlight seems to only allow users to find files but without relation to where the file might be located. This works fine if the filename is "New_York_Birth_Rate_2008.pdf". How about if it's stored as "Birth_RatesNew_York2008.pdf"? Searching for "2008.pdf" would bring up a whole host of files and one could select the one in the right folder. But what if you have a large number of files called "2008.pdf", stored under various folders (birth rate, mortality, morbidity, rain fall, humidity, crime rate, etc etc etc" and you want to narrow the search? Sure, one could use the advanced search, but this defeats the purpose of a file launcher like Spotlight.
Ideally, I want to input something like, "new york, birth, 2008" in any order and it would search for all folders and files with similar names, sorted by placing ones with more matched terms in terms of the file path. Is there an input method to do this? Surely this is a common scenario?
Here's another example, "Sales Person ABronx2009SeptInsurance Plan A.pdf". Now imagine I have 200 sales persons, and 50 areas. I want to type "richard, longevity plus.doc, bronx" to narrow the list. Sure, I can use advanced search, but as I said, this defeats the purpose of spotlight.
I would like to know if I can use Imovie to edit a clip I have saved in Mpg. If this is not possible, what format shall I have to be able to use Imovie to edit / cut certain clips.

I have been thinking about stepping up from my MBP 13" to a top spec imac but looking at the specs see that the GPU fitted is what I would class as incredibly out of date and can bought for about 75 new. This is really putting me off thinking about buying one and considering the imac was only "updated" not long ago does anyone know Apples logic for fitting such an old GPU? The 5750 is about 6 generations behind the latest. I realise GPU's get released constantly but not that quickly so that this new imac is this far behind. I wanted to use a mac for heavy photo and video and the odd gaming and although the 5750 is sufficient it just bugs me that I know it's a "budget" card.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been using Pages '08 for my final year dissertation for university. I really like it and have got used to it pretty quickly (coming from Windows).
I have downloaded the trial of iWork '09 and used Pages '09 to open my document. My document sections are as follows:
SECTION 1 - Title Page - 1 page
SECTION 2 - Contents, abstract, abbreviations, etc - 3 pages
SECTION 3 - Main report - 10 pages
SECTION 4 - Appendix - 6 pages
-------
TOTAL REPORT - 20 pages
In Pages '08 i can reset the Page Count in the Footer so that Section 3 displays for example 'Page 2 of 10'. This is exactly what I want because the section should have its own page count.
When I opened the document in Pages '09, the footer now displays for example 'Page 2 of 20'. Basically it is showing the entire document Page Count rather than the Page Count for that particular Section. Is this something that Apple have changed for Pages '09? or is there a setting so that the Page Count relates to the Section rather than the entire document?
I just have started playing on a Mac, and I'm being presented with a few keyboard challenges. I figured out a couple already, but still can't figure out how to minimize the WoW screen without logging out. On my Dell, I'd just hit the "windows" key. Also, I can't move skills manually from say the 1 key to the 4 key. Click and drag doesn't seem to work for this action.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that the system preferences for the keyboard backlight settings only seem to be partially working on my Mac Book Pro 2011. This might be since I updated to 10.7.4 or applied the firmware update EFI 2.7; I can't say which since I did the two close together. The keyboard still lights up and the slider that sets the time-out for illumination still works as do the F5 and F6 keys to dim and brighten the light. However, the preference setting seem to completely ignore the tick box to select whether you want the illumination function on or off.

If I try to save onto my second drive, " Macintosh HD 2" (the non-boot drive) it works fine.
I have
1/ checked read and write permissions and my Macintosh HD and they are set for "read & write"
2/ I have repaired disk premissions using Disc Utilities to no avail
3/ booted using Cmd - R and used terminal and applied "reset home directory permissions and ACL's" to no avail.

Been messing with the spotlight websearch feature using it at the engine for our website, but there seems to a css class called .spotlight built into it somewhere. Is it able to be modified? If so, it also displays the constructed query for example "Constructed query: kMDItemTextContent=='march'c" at the top of the screen is there any way to get rid of this? There seems to be little to no info on this the websearch in general does anyone even use this?
View 1 Replies View Relatedive just purchased my first iMac as above for my son as his 1st desktop. im in the process of upgrading the RAM to 2gb and looking into purchasing Leopard 10.5. could anyone advise whether there are any other 'home' upgrades i can carry out to maximise this unit's potential for online use in 2012? and whether these 2 initial upgrades should give noticeable increase in performance to warrant the spend? i do have an iPhone4 and wish to use this unit for connection via iTunes. he currently likes to play online games such as 'Minecraft' and we have found it very slow so far...the unit does have the Airport wireless card installed, no bluetooth though.

Very simple question: Would this screen protector fit the new MacBook Pro 15" (non retina) with a hi-res screen? url....The reason why I ask, I'm going to be adding the hi-res screen (glossy, not matte) and I just wanted to make sure.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro ca. 2010. It's on 10.7.2. For the past few months I've been fighting this particular problem, and have not been able to get a solution on other Mac forums. Hopefully someone here has some insight. Every time I start or restart the Mac it restores the desktop, including the dock and apps, to a state from a few months ago. It opens Safari, iPhoto, System Preferences and the Real Player Downloader (which I just this moment deleted). iPhoto immediately wants to repair its database, Safari opens the tabs that were open that day, and System Preferences goes to Network.
I have tried deleting the folders in /username/libraray/application saved states. I have locked that folder. I have unchecked the option in Preferneces, and I always uncheck the option to save states when shutting down. Based on a suggestion from a user elsewhere I repaired disk permissions on the hard drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lion I've experienced periodic crashes- my 24" iMac (2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory) suddenly shut down using iPhoto, Safari, and/or Pages. After running numerous hardware diagnostic tests I was told it was not a hardware problem, and a complete reinstall of Lion and all Apple software was recommended. I had back-ups on a My Book which I thought I could easily use to restore my personal data. I was directed to drag files between Finder windows rather than try to restore from backup via Time Machine. All was well & good until I tried to restore my numerous mail folders and locally-saved emails.
Evidently Mail is a hidden folder... I've been told by user group buddies how to see the hidden Mail folder on my iMac, but not on the My Book. Trying to restore from back-up via Time Machine is not an option, as I guess it doesn't recognize the newly installed system. Also tried going into Mail and importing, but when I navigate to the backup there is no visible Mail folder. Another suggestion was to try 3rd party software i.e. Back in Time or BackUp Loupe. I keep thinking there's some secret key combination, some easy way I just don't know of to retrieve my Mail data from the backup... is there???

If I have a "group" in Address book, how do I edit "which" email is the address to use for each user in that group? Back in Snow Leopard, there was a discussion article that said iCloud broke the ability to edit a distribution list, but that it would likely be fixed in Lion. how to do this in Lion? No matter what I do, that option is greyed-out in my Edit menu.
