MacBook :: Apple Care Pricing - Educational Store?

Jun 10, 2009

I was just looking at the apple care prices for my macbook (2.0ghz aluminum) and it is $183. I am looking in the educational store, not sure if that has a discount or not. The macbook pro apple care is $239. So all the people that get the 13" mbp that came out this week now have to shell out an additional $56 just because it says "pro" on the label?

MacBook Pro :: Repair Corrupted Hard Disk When Don't Have A Startup Disc Provided By Apple?

Feb 24, 2012

So my MBP was really making horrible clicking noise and I figured out that my start up Lion OSX disk partition is corrupted. I have three partitions. One for Lion OS X, another for Documents and another for Movies and Downloads. When I run disk utility and verify other two partitions(documents and movies/downloads), they appear to be okay but when I do the same with Lion OS X then it says:

The volume Lion OS X was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired....then use Disk Utility to repair this disk. Is my hard drive gonna die soon? Or will it be okay if I just format my 500gb hard drive completely and install the fresh copy of Lion OS X again? I don't have a recovery disc or what so ever provided by Apple anymore. I have a DMG installation file of Lion OS X and a USB flash drive(4 GB approx). How can I repair the disk partition without the recovery start up disc?

MacBook Pro :: Why No Official Apple Docking Station

Oct 23, 2010

Its time for me to upgrade my macbook pro(2007 model). I really want to get another mac, as they are pretty, sturdy, run windows if needed and have good battery. Problem is theres no bloomin dock! At work I have a dell latitude that I can carry around, and just sits into a dock to connect to my peripherals when I am at my desk. Most folks say its just a few wires, and only takes 30 seconds, but not really. I would have:

3 External Disks.
Speakers.
Ergonomic keyboard(not mac wireless).
Ergonomic mouse(not mighty mouse).
USB interfacing guitar pedal.
Card reader.
Monitor.

That's a short list and could be longer if I add ipods etc. My point is, or rather, my question is why don't apple do docking stations? They used to do them? Loads of other companies do them.

When setting up the certificate would i set the dNSName to  domainname.com or to server.domainname.com

My mail server host name is set to server.domainname.com so i would assume this is the correct one, but emails are addressed to name@domainname.com so

I want to be sure i am setting this correctly before i generate the csr

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Permissions For IWork Pages Templates

Jun 16, 2012

I have created a new template document in Pages but am unable to 'Save As Template'; I get an error message saying that I don't have the right permissions. Having looked in the Library/Application Support/iWork folder I find that I have no permissions for the Pages sub-folder. It says there is 'custom access', my account doesn't exist in the list and everything is greyed out. Interestingly however, I do have permissions for the equivalent Numbers sub-folder. I have run Repair Disc Permissions - but this makes no difference.

OS X :: Official Thread: SL Has Dumped GPU?

Jun 14, 2009

Given the vagaries of Apple's support documentation I would like to know exactly what GPUs are supported by Snow Leopard for use in Grand Central and Open CL.The list does not contain my NVIDIA Ge Force 8800 GS!After much searching it is absolutely unclear weather Apple will support the GPU or not. It is a re-branded NVIDIA chip and so is it included or excluded?

I for one will be greatly disappointed in Apple does not support it. It is one thing that my ageing powerbook will not be supported, but a computer that was top of the line iMac just in April of this year!

Mac Pro :: RAID5 Vs 1 - Archival Purposes

Nov 4, 2009

I just need a bit of help deciding between a software RAID5 vs software RAID1 array for archival purposes. the RAID will be installed into my hackintosh and shared over the network for TimeMachine backups as well as extra backups from my multitudes of external HDDs. i am thinking 3x1TB WD Greens (RAID5) for $103Aus each, or 2x1TB WD Greens (RAID1). my main concern is data loss and speed of the drives. most setups will clearly equal 2TB of total data storage, we feel that will be enough for a few years (will be backing up 2x laptops + 2x iMacs + the hackintosh). which one will be faster? (i guess this wont matter as the network will be the bottlebeck) which one will be more secure in the end? (our house tends to have power dropouts). the network is a gigabit network over cat5e, we may upgrade to cat6e in the future if the speed benefits are THAT great. i am forced to go with a software RAID via OSX at this point in time because a RAID card is just too costly. my current motherboard in the hackintosh is a GA-EG31M-S2 Gigabyte. it has 4 SATA ports and no RAID support - will OSX still be able to do a software RAID? i am presuming that it can. anyway, what are the main pros and cons for this sort of setup?

Applications :: Run Darwine 0.9.27 On Mac (OSX 10.5.6) For Emulation Purposes / X11?

Feb 16, 2009

I am trying to run Darwine 0.9.27 on my Mac (OSX 10.5.6) for emulation purposes, however it does not work. I downloaded X11 2.3.2.1 from the Xquartz project to make sure I was up to date with X11, however that did not solve the problem. For example, here is the error I get when I try and run Knytt, a compact, free Windows game: err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\Users\Banjaloupe\Games\Knytt\Knytt.exe" failed, status c0000005

I think the problem is with X11, since I also cannot run GIMPshop, which I know needs X11. However, I have no experience at all using X11 in the first place, which is why I am quite stumped. Of course, the real issue could be with Darwine, or some other incompatibility I'm missing.

Hardware :: New Monitor For Photography Purposes - IPS?

I am in the market for a new monitor, I would look at matte IPS monitor, but so far (and I haven't done that much research so far) I have only really found the Dell 2209wa which looks great but its only 1680x1050 and I would much prefer 1920x1200 or something to that extent. Those are really my only requirements matte and 1920+ but I also don't want to go above 24" because then it just starts getting too big (especially since it will be in a dorm room next year).

Hardware :: The Official Tablet Bitter Disappointment Thread?

Jan 26, 2010

No matter what Apple releases tomorrow morning, there will be a sizable contingent that consider it a complete and utter failure. Most bitter of these will be the folks that perceive it as being "oh so close" to exactly what they wanted, but for some number of baffling Apple decisions to "cripple" it.

So I reckon I'd get a thread started now, just to save time.By my figuring, the possible points of dismay will be:-- Doesn't run "full OS X" and is therefore "just a big iPod Touch"-- No OLED screen (we'll just call those first two "The Troubles" in honor of Ireland)-- Lack of this or that port, or any at all outside of a headphone jack and a dock connector-- Fails to deliver on various rumored subscription services-- Can't run Final Cut Pro, Aperture, Pro Tools, or various processor intensive Big Apps-- Exclusive cell service via AT&T, aka "Oh God I hate them so much my head just exploded"-- Doesn't do "video chat" out of the box
-- And, of course, the perennial: the pricing is insane and relegates the thing to niche statusI'd put money on the first two, wouldn't be at all surprised to see the next three, have no idea about the rest. However, none of that distresses me, particularly, because I expect the all-over experience of the thing to be pretty compelling, and for it to be really, really good at what it's designed to do. I'll be pleasantly surprised if its priced aggressively with an eye towards really shaking up the industry.
