My user's preference, seems to be corrupted. Any way to recreate it. I tried to rename the folder preferences in the library but it will not let me do it. I tried to drag it in the delete but a message tells me that it OS needs the folder. How to recreate the Preferences folder from scratch?

I've corrupted the preference panel for .Mac in my 10.4 installation. Does anyone know where I can get the .prefs app to reinstall for it so I can get that page in Preferences up again? I don't want to reinstall the whole thing!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a secondary user account who's preferences will not save. I have tried making it an administrator, but that hasn't seemed to help. The dock changes oringinally weren't saving, and I deleted the plist file, but that was a one time fix. I made changes once, and it only saved them once. Also, I have an application (Steam) that has been set to open when the user signs on. I have tried removing this program both through its own preferences panel, and also through the Start-Up items menu in the user preferences on the computer, and neither one is working.

I run day-to-day in a non-Admin account. About 18 months ago, the in the menu bar has gone from 100% black to 50% black to 25% black, alternating horizontally. This happens only in my non-Admin account.
A few days ago, I have not been able to properly log off of MobileMe or access the Account info. I get this screen:
Again, it only happens in my day-to-day non Admin account. I can access these fine in my other accounts.
My AppleCare warranty runs out next month. So I am going to take my 2007 24", 2.4GHz, 4GB iMac to the Apple Store to see what's what.
Can they restore my account and still keep all my additions/modifications to my account and still be able to fix it?
l I now have to completely wipe, re-format and re-load OSX onto my iMac's internal HD, My iMac is a late 2009 27" and at present has OSX 10.8.5 loaded, ( loaded but with many miss-functions ). Prior to the problem the iMac was running OSX Lion, what version though I can't remember.I installed 10.8.5 the other day to see if that would fix things, but it hasn't. It was not a "clean install", just regular one from downloaded OSX 10.8.5.
I have run Disk Utility and TechTool Pro' 7 to try to make repairs to address the problems so far to no avail. Main problems are that my most used applications, FCP-7 Studio, Aperture and Photoshop CS5 amongst others, open but then immediately crash. I've reloaded the troubled applications, de-installed them properly with de-installation app's then clean re-installed them, but that's made no difference. They will not mount.
I reckon there must be a fault or corruption on the HD, probably caused during the Optimisation as everything was functioning well before I did that. So, the only OSX install disks I have are the original disks that came with the iMac, OSX 10.6.2 and a Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD OSX 10.6. I do have the downloaded copy of OSX Mountain Lion that I pulled from the App Store the other day and that copy is now on an external USB / Firewire 800 HD.Â
As I said I would like to be able to clean off the iMac's internal 2tb drive completely and install a fresh newer OSX. If I first have to load OSX.6.2 then upgrade via the App Store that's fine, but I'd rather just go straight to Mountain Lion if possible. Whatever works best. Getting rid of any corruption on the iMac's HD is the prime motivation.Â
All my applications and files are backed up to a 2tb LaCie external drive.The iMac has approximately 900 gb's of content onboard and the rest is free / unused space.

For the past few months, I've tried to restore my iPod Classic because it randomly restarts itself, not to mention moving on the following song during the middle of a song that is already playing. However, it seems iTunes won't restore it. The following message appears every time I try to do this:

But that website simply doesn't help me out. I've taken my iMac to a Genius and he basically said that something is corrupted in OS X. I should mention the fact that programs such as Onyx and Maintenance claim that I am not the admin when in fact, my account is the only account on the computer. The funny thing was that I created a new account and restored the iPod through there, it would work just fine.
So, besides that long explanation of my problem, is there anyway I can fix this without having to resort to placing all my files on an external and installing a clean copy of OS X? Would archiving and installing back to Leopard do the trick?
I have One Single External HHD for Time Machine. Will this Drive do time Machine Back ups for each user. The Time Machine Prefrences are kept at the factory set up, in other words nothing added + and nothing deleted - from time machine Scheme?Â

Set up my 21.5" iMac last night, set up a new user "Rory" - then downloaded Migration Assistant on my PC to transfer files, music, pics, docs and my iMac has created "Rory1" since I've discovered I should've transfered docs across BEFORE I set up an initial user!Â
The only thing I'd set up on my original "Rory" mac account was downloading Flash Player and installing my email to 'Mail' - so I've hardly done a lot of configs.Â
Can I just delete the original "Rory" profile and use the "Rory1" profile that the Mac set up? ( I realise the Mac has done this because my old Windows PC user name was obviously called "Rory" as well).Â
Or, is it easier to try and get the files (transfered from the PC under 'Rory1') to the original Mac profile of "Rory".Â
It's only 12 hours since I first went to set the my Mac up so as I said, I'm hardly in that much of a pickle yet - am I?!Â

I have created user accounts on my iMac for each of my kids. Whenever we try to login to my daughter's account, we see the standard 'galaxy' background, then a flash of gray, then the background again and then that process repeats over and over. The DVD Player app is running, but I cannot figure out a way to kill it or get out of the endless loop. Everytime she logs in, I end up having to hold the button on the back of the computer to shut it off, then restart everything.
Is there a way to sign in to her account without having all the applications launched that were running when she signed out? I think that might be the first step to fixing everything, but I can't figure out how to do that. Is there a preferences file I can kill? Or are there aliases in a folder somewhere that contain the items to be relaunched at startup? Her account is managed under parental controls.

I have an iMac that runs quite slowly after a few hours use, especially when using Photoshop and other Adobe software. What happens is, the processor gets completely swamped with "System" tasks (shown in Activity Monitor as red bars), the result being that "User" tasks are slow and the mouse jumps around the screen, rendering the computer almost useless. I've done a bunch of disk utilities including Leopard's onboard Disk Utility as well as OnyX, and although some errors were found, it was nothing serious. And after repairing, problems persisted.
Now, here's the thing. When I open Console, most of the errors are Adobe-related (mostly Photoshop and Dreamweaver). And I just ran a "Validate Fonts" check in Font Book, and found 15 fonts that have "serious errors, do not use".
So, I've often heard that Leopard, Adobe CS3, and corrupted fonts are a lethal combination. Not that I'm asking anyone to diagnose my problems from across the world, but does this sound like it could be the root of my problem? And if so, what's the proper process for removing the dangerous fonts so they can't ruin anything? Do I just delete them, or do corrupted fonts cause deeper problems which might necessitate reinstallation?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have about 6 external USB drives that are mostly 1TB or 1.5TB. I have been trying to copy files from old ones to new ones but if I plug in more than two they keep unmounting with the message that the drive was not unmounted properly and may now be damaged. I have two so far that are corrupted. I have tried three different powered USB hubs thinking it was lack of power but it made no difference. This problem occurs on my 26" iMac Running Lion and on my new PowerBookPro running Mavericks.Â

Apparently I have some corrupted fonts which I have not been able to remove. I disable them, restart computer and some enabled again. Attempt to remove via comand, occasionally they appear in trash but some have the grayed out "remove font..."

how to repair a .mov file that got corrupted when i was filming.it is something that i can't film again so i can't just remake the video. photobooth forced closed. and i was able to recover the 148MB .mov file from the photo booth library director by showing content. Every application i have tried. does not reconize it as a video file or if it does it only sees it as black. i tried to open it in hexedit and it looks like the QT container is messed up or the headers? i have tried FCP / Compressor and all the professional software offered by APPLE nothing works. says invalid movie file.    Â

1. I do occasional maintenance with onyx and have been getting a few startup disk errors in recent months. These seem to get repaired and the computer still functions as normal. I have never had these before in 8 years of using osx so they do worry me. Is the osx boot drive just a bit corrupted? Would a simple reinstall help or is the hd showing signs of failure?
2. The trash simply refuses to empty. The operation can�t be completed because you don�t have permission to access some of the items.
I've tried to bring the items back to the desktop and the folder they came from but they simply make a copy of them. I've tried the option key method and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash + sudo rm -rf /Users/user_name/.Trash in the terminal but get no change

Now, whenever I try to download/install updates, I get an error message saying "The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. Since my latest clean system install a few days ago, Image Capture appears to be corrupted. It is missing some menu items, will save only PNG and TIFF file types from my scanner, and crashes frequently. No other applications are affected (for example, I can still scan to JPEG using any other application). Is there an Image Capture preferences file I can find and delete, or is there a quick way to reinstall the application?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSome how through interacting through my iMac file system via PlayStation3 Media Server and my Macbook Pro, the permissions on my Movies folder were what I can only describe as totally nuked and I can no longer access my data. There are no longer any permissions associated with my movies folder in my user's home directory. Accordingly, I cannot access the large volume of movies (all law fully copied from hard copies which I own, of course) via local disk acess or over the network through my Playstation 3 or by mounting my user volume onto my Macbook Pro. I did change the owner via the terminal and the chown command but while the directory comes up when I look at the permissions using root access, when navigating through the finder I still cannot access the data in the folder.Â
I would like to try to get my movies back.Â

I just had to clean-install OS X Lion (10.7.3), I synched my e-mail accounts (Gmail apps account) with Apple Mail (5.3) and some attachments (mainly PDFs and DOCs) are now corrupted when trying to open up in Apple Mail. In the Google Mail web access the corrupted attachments can be opened perfectly.
