MacBook :: Cleaning Motherboard In BlackBook / No Longer Works Properly?
Jul 27, 2010So a co-worker has a black MacBook that his family managed to spill some liquid on. It no longer works properly, of course. He just wants to get a new computer, so he's giving it to me. I'll get all of his data off the HDD for him and then I can keep the MacBook. It's definitely a big step up from my PowerBook in terms of speed and performance (I'll miss the dedicated card and FW800, though).
I figure it can't hurt to try to clean the motherboard/logic board in the computer to see if I can get it running. Worse comes to worst, I can buy a new logic board for the computer and put it in and be set. Some questions:- What's the best way to clean a motherboard? I've seen everything from isopropyl alcohol to distilled water to just a gentle detergent and warm tap water.
- What's a good way to tell what model the computer is from the serial number? I will get the actual computer tomorrow, but my co-worker can't remember which model it is.From my research it could be anywhere between the 2 GHz and the 2.4 GHz, though he bought it refurbished from Apple last year so I'm guessing it's the 2.4 GHz model.- If the logic board is shot, and it's not the 2.4 GHz model, does anyone know if the 2.4 GHz board can be put in a non-2.4 GHz machine?
It's not every day one comes across a free Mac, so it's definitely something to put some effort into. Once I max out the RAM and put a new drive in (maybe even an SSD in an optibay) the computer should be quite capable.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Address Book App No Longer Works On IMac
Feb 5, 2012I have been using Lion for many months with few issues. But the Address Book application on my iMac started acting up two days ago and now will not open at all. BTW, I use iCloud extensively to sync the iMac, an iBook, an iPad and and iPhone. The Address Book app still works fine on the other three, just not the iMac.

Mar 31, 2012In a Finder window, if I'm looking for photos (for example) and I click on the thumbnail view, I cannot enlarge the thumbnails like I used to with the pinch gesture. Has this been disabled in Lion 10.7? Is there a way to allow it again? The 'Pinch to Zoom' gesture has been allowed in System preferences and it works with every application, just not in a Finder window.

Apr 30, 2012I've been using a 3TB western digital hard drive flawlessly for months now. I'm posting here because the only thing that has changed within the time frame of my WD hard drive no longer working is updating my Lion install to 10.7.3. When I plug my WD hard drive into either of my macs (which are both running 10.7.3 , one is a macbook, the other an iMac) the external hard drive shows up on my desktop, and within 5 seconds will disconnect itself and I'll then get a warning telling me that I didn't eject my hard drive properly. I was starting to think it was my USB or power cable until I plugged the WD external into my old Compaq laptop that I'm running Linux on and it worked flawlessly!

The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message Â
I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.Â

they are all having problems one of the aol wont update all my new mail and is like 5 days behind. it used to but doesnt now. Â
i try and send emails from each of them and none of them send it comes up with outgoing server problem and its driving me nuts. Â
just want all my mail accounts set up so i can send and recieve from them all i feel like deleting the mail app and just doing them all manually but why should i this is one of the reasons i wanted a mac!
OS X Mavericks :: Preview Program Has Not Been Working Properly
Jun 3, 2014About a week ago my preview program has not been working properly. Whenever i try and put text into my pdf documents the preview program shows the ‘spinning wheel of death’ at the point of saving…(I don’t know what else to call that multicoloured candy-looking spinning thing) It does not freeze up with ALL pdf…just some of them. I was thinking about deleting preview and then reinstalling it..but my mac system does not allow me.  One perhaps important thing is: when i edit the ‘stubborn’ pdf files, and then press ‘save’ nothing happens. I have to press save twice…then the program becomes inactive.Â

PowerPC :: G4 Combo Drive Works Fine But Not Eject Properly
Dec 15, 2006I found this iBook in my dad's attic at his business. He said he had bought when they released and planned on using it for financial stuff, but figured his Windows laptop would do better. It was in its box BTW, not collecting dust.
Anyways, it's out of warranty and it's specs are:
1.07 GHz PowerPC G4
768 MB DDR SDRAM
Combo drive
12" screen
30GB HD
The combo drive is not fun. It takes a good push, no shove, into the slot for it to go in. It reads it fine and all, and can burn CD's, but pulling it out is plain horrible. I can't just take it and pull it out, I have to have my dad hold the iBook, and I grab the CD and pull it out. The CD ends up having deep scratches and is unreadable from then on. What do I do? Replace it? Or is it repairable?

I clicked on a Google image of the NAFTA Super Highway and the picture at the site opened with Internet Explorer .
I didn't have Internet Explorer on the computer before this happened .
Since then Internet Explorer pops up after I go on line with the Mozilla Firefox browser .
I could not get it to stop, so I moved it to the trash and it is still being held there . This is what I removed .

Safari :: Videos No Longer Playing Properly?
Mar 23, 2012Recently videos are no longer playing properly on Safari, though they are on other browsers.Â
YouTube videos flicker and often display no video while the audio plays. Today where video should appear on The Onion site there was only the progress bar, with no audio either.Â
I was going to delete and reinstall Safari, but Momma Apple don't like that. What to do? A Flash problem at only affects Safari?

OS X :: Firefox 3.0 No Longer Works?
Feb 20, 2009For a long time I was running Firefox 3.0 just fine, until a few months ago when every time I tried to open it, it froze up and I had to shut it down. I removed it and installed Firefox 2.0 which was fine for a while but I would really like to start using 3.0 again.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, deleting my Firefox profile, etc.
I'm on a PowerBook G4.

Jan 2, 2011I been using Mac all my life, I have boot camp with Windows 7 X64 install and my leopard is running X64. I been using my windows 7 more than my mac spent 4 month straight using windows (windows put cocaine in there to get us hook). Any way one day my friend wanted to play a game of age of empires on Mac since he doesn't have windows so I boot in mac fine after a swift victory. I boot in mac and windows no longer works: blue screen of death so I reinstall after a few weeks I go back to mac to update and I check my windows partition from my mac all I see is 1 file with weird symbols? I go back to windows and it crashes again. So I figure it my bootcamp has a problem or it my mac side.

Then I did the upgrade to OSX 10.9.2, for sofar was everything ok. Later I did the upgrade to OSX 10.9.3 and then the problems started.
A portion of AVID no longer worked properly. So the problem was clearly the upgrade. Now my question is how can I go back to OSX 10.9.2Â ...

Applications :: Search No Longer Works On Mail App On 10.4.11
Feb 10, 2009I have found that the search function in mail.app no longer works. I can type an email address or name etc that I know for a fact is there but search fails to bring back any results.
The company I work for has a system where whenever an email comes in it is read and then placed in a folder in mail called 'Completed' so we know the email has been seen by someone and acted upon.
I noticed that occasionally the search function would not work and then I found it was getting worse now it simply no longer works. I think the best it manages is 2 characters in the search field then as soon as you type a 3rd it says no results found.
Is there a way to rebuild the database or something? Is this a common fault?
Without the search function I now have to manually search nearly 6000 messages.
OS X :: Snow Leopard 64 Bit - Webex No Longer Works?
Nov 19, 2009After upgrading to Snow Leopard a program I need for my job no longer works. The program is Webex. They claim that it should work by opening Safari in 32 bit mode or with Firefox, but neither option works for me. My plan is to reinstall Leopard (10.5) on an extra partition and reboot into it whenever I need to start a Webex session. I don't think this will cause any problem with my Snow Leopard partition, but thought I would check first.

Feb 27, 2012Still using the iMac we purchased about 5 years ago, and it's working fine. About a year ago, the numeric keypad on our wired keyboard stopped working. Anytime one of the keys was pressed on the number pad, the whole computer would freeze completely, and would have to be restarted.
A few weeks ago, we decided to stop tolerating this, and purchased a new wired keyboard with the numeric keypad. The numbers still don't work, and all the F buttons don't either. The volume controls don't work, and I've tried reconfigurating them. But they only end up working in iTunes.
We plugged back in the old keyboard and the same thing happened. Number pad doesn't work and the volume controls, etc. don't work.
Called Apple and they told me to call the store. So I called the Apple store we purchased the keyboard from, and they had no idea. Just told me to return the keyboard...
I don't want to have to try installing programs to get this to work. It really should be simpler than that.

MacBook :: Password No Longer Works After Migration
Mar 25, 2012During the week my macbook hard drive bit the dust. I had a new hard drive installed today and I migrated my old data over to the new drive from backup when I got it home. So far so good - except when I try to log-in to my migrated user, the password simply doesn't work. I've tried lots of alternatives, even though I'm 100% sure I know what the password is. It's simply inconceivable that it can be anything other than what I think it is!Â
I tried resetting the password of the user account in question through another administrator user account, but even the new password doesn't work when I log out and try to log-in to my old user again. I've tried going in through the master password (honestly, I have no recollection of even setting a master password) but nothing that I type in works for that either. I only have a very limited pool of passwords and I've tried them all.
I was running Lion on the account I'm trying to re-access from my old hard drive, but the new drive is running Snow Leopard. Could it be something to do with this? Failing that, is there any other way to reset the password?
