Applications :: Search No Longer Works On Mail App On 10.4.11
Feb 10, 2009
I have found that the search function in mail.app no longer works. I can type an email address or name etc that I know for a fact is there but search fails to bring back any results.
The company I work for has a system where whenever an email comes in it is read and then placed in a folder in mail called 'Completed' so we know the email has been seen by someone and acted upon.
I noticed that occasionally the search function would not work and then I found it was getting worse now it simply no longer works. I think the best it manages is 2 characters in the search field then as soon as you type a 3rd it says no results found.
Is there a way to rebuild the database or something? Is this a common fault?
Without the search function I now have to manually search nearly 6000 messages.
I have used Google for years and Safari. I use Google search as my home page. (the same issue occurs if I go to google)
When I enter a search item in the search bar; the search bar shifts to the upper left corner of the screen. Then, my items appears. However, no search occurs. When I hit search, nothing happens.
I switch to Firefox and my Google is working fine. I downloaded the most recent Safari. No change.
My iCloud mail on my iMac no longer works, yesterday it just stopped. I go tth eiMac in mid 2007, same iCloud email account works on a mini mac i purchased last summer, solutions?
I am having a problem where my mail App is not searching the entire body of the message any more. I installed Lion soon after it was released, and I believe that it has been working up until recently.
If I do a search, it won't search the message body, and gives me no option to search for "Message contains" (just "People" and "Subjects"). If search for subject "foo" and then click on the "Subject" pull down menu, it shows "Subject" and "Entire Message", but "Entire Message" is greyed out.
I've done a lot of web searching and most people with similar problems had problems with Spotlight. If I do a Spotlight search, it does find all of the mail messages correctly. Its just the Mail app that won't let me search.
I haven't tried re-indexing spotlight yet because spotlight seems to be working okay. Note that all of my mail accounts are "POP" accounts with the mail stored locally on my machine.
For a long time I was running Firefox 3.0 just fine, until a few months ago when every time I tried to open it, it froze up and I had to shut it down. I removed it and installed Firefox 2.0 which was fine for a while but I would really like to start using 3.0 again.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, deleting my Firefox profile, etc.
I have never had a problem before but, recently, my gmail isn't working with the mail application. I can see sent messages, but the mailbox no longer downloads mail from gmail. My inbox looks empty on the application even but, I logged into gmail on google and all the inbox messages were there.
I been using Mac all my life, I have boot camp with Windows 7 X64 install and my leopard is running X64. I been using my windows 7 more than my mac spent 4 month straight using windows (windows put cocaine in there to get us hook). Any way one day my friend wanted to play a game of age of empires on Mac since he doesn't have windows so I boot in mac fine after a swift victory. I boot in mac and windows no longer works: blue screen of death so I reinstall after a few weeks I go back to mac to update and I check my windows partition from my mac all I see is 1 file with weird symbols? I go back to windows and it crashes again. So I figure it my bootcamp has a problem or it my mac side.
I want to read disks I used with an imac v. 9 but my floppy drive no longer works. It was/is a smartdisk model fdusb-m (the one that came with different color tops to mix and match with an imac).
Title of the post says it all really. My printer is one of the ones supposedly supported (x4690) and it works fine when connected by usb, but not wirelessly. I have tried everything I know to get this working.
The only clue I have is when I try to print and run a log, it says
Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter. E [30/Aug/2009:14:17:13 +0100] Unable to execute /usr/libexec/cups/backend/lexnet3: insecure file permissions (0100755)
I've tried to submit the problem to Lexmark, but the 'submit' button doesn't work on their website,.
My HDMI cord is attached an works fine. I upgraded to Mavericks and the display came up on my TV. Now today it won't come up. I rebooted and no better!
the update feature on the apple app no longer works. It starts then immediately stops. No message. but it has updated the same verison of iTunes a dozen times even thought it is listed as installed.
Info: MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), purchased in 2009
After upgrading to Snow Leopard a program I need for my job no longer works. The program is Webex. They claim that it should work by opening Safari in 32 bit mode or with Firefox, but neither option works for me. My plan is to reinstall Leopard (10.5) on an extra partition and reboot into it whenever I need to start a Webex session. I don't think this will cause any problem with my Snow Leopard partition, but thought I would check first.

Still using the iMac we purchased about 5 years ago, and it's working fine. About a year ago, the numeric keypad on our wired keyboard stopped working. Anytime one of the keys was pressed on the number pad, the whole computer would freeze completely, and would have to be restarted.
A few weeks ago, we decided to stop tolerating this, and purchased a new wired keyboard with the numeric keypad. The numbers still don't work, and all the F buttons don't either. The volume controls don't work, and I've tried reconfigurating them. But they only end up working in iTunes.
We plugged back in the old keyboard and the same thing happened. Number pad doesn't work and the volume controls, etc. don't work.
Called Apple and they told me to call the store. So I called the Apple store we purchased the keyboard from, and they had no idea. Just told me to return the keyboard...
I don't want to have to try installing programs to get this to work. It really should be simpler than that.

During the week my macbook hard drive bit the dust. I had a new hard drive installed today and I migrated my old data over to the new drive from backup when I got it home. So far so good - except when I try to log-in to my migrated user, the password simply doesn't work. I've tried lots of alternatives, even though I'm 100% sure I know what the password is. It's simply inconceivable that it can be anything other than what I think it is!
I tried resetting the password of the user account in question through another administrator user account, but even the new password doesn't work when I log out and try to log-in to my old user again. I've tried going in through the master password (honestly, I have no recollection of even setting a master password) but nothing that I type in works for that either. I only have a very limited pool of passwords and I've tried them all.
I was running Lion on the account I'm trying to re-access from my old hard drive, but the new drive is running Snow Leopard. Could it be something to do with this? Failing that, is there any other way to reset the password?
I upgraded to Lion and now I can't VNC into my macbook pro from my PC. It connects but it displays a background or some kind of basic wallpaper image but I can't control anything?
It stopped working on my macbook air sometime within last month. Still works just fine on my iPad and iPhone. When I try to be sure I'm signed in it says my apple id can not be used to set up iMessage at this time with the customer code 3778-3798-0955. 800 support unuseful.
I have used an external 23" monitor with my macbook air for almost 2 years, i have had a few issues, mainly just temporary blackouts lasting for just a second or two, but also seen red screen (all colors become red), this was however just a rare issue and usually it was working just fine.i borrowed a friends macbook and connected with the same cable to the same screen, and it worked immediately with no issues.
the screen would go completely black or start flickering (haven't seen this flicker before), and i had to fiddle around with reconnecting to get it working. the next day when i turned it on i had no picture, i tried again and still nothing, so i decided to install the updates, including thunderport firmware update. Now i got the old glitches and lots of new ones, at the times when i assume it would have worked before i am just getting static (black and white dots randomly everwhere) i can also get red'ish screen with instense flickering, but mostly just completely black. I thought the problem could be my cable or the monitor itself, but that's not the issue since those worked immediately without any problem on my friends computer, so it must be the macbook air itself!
I bought a pre-owned iMac, late 2011 running Lion, took it to the Apple store to have the hard drive wiped and Lion re-installed. Then I brought it home and migrated files via Time Machine over from my Mac Book Pro , early 2009, running Mavericks. Now my log-on password no longer works. What happened?
I am using Mail and Firefox. Suddenly today, when I click on a link in an email, the browser navigation to that URL no longer works. When I click on the link, the browser comes to the foreground, but the URL is not passed into the browser and whatever was previously in the browser remains, rather than navigating to the linked page.I remember having this issue year ago in the Windows world. I am not aware of any changes to Mail or Firefox preferences. As a test, I changed the default browser to Safari, and the links from emails work normally.
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.1). I have an HP DeskJet F4280 All-In-One. It used to work great under 10.5.x, but now it will print fine but not scan.
If I launch HP Device Manager, and double-click Scan Picture, HP Scan Pro window opens, but I get the following error: Sorry, scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found.).
If I press the hardware Scan button on the top of the unit itself, the power light blinks rapidly for about 10 seconds, then reverts to its normal state, and nothing else happens.
If I launch Image Capture 6.0(424) I get this error: No camera or scanner connected.
Under System Preferences>Print & Fax>Scan a window opens that reads HP Deskjet F4200 series and I click on Scanner, but it says No scanner selected.
However, System Profiler lists Deskjet F4200 series under USB High-Speed Bus, and, as already mentioned, the printer works fine.
PowerBook G4 Ti:Where can one look up the meaning of diagnostics codes? HDD diagnostics error code: ata1/6/3 HD:2,0 What does a single blinking LED on the battery mean? AppleCare does not show the HDD, chance it is ok but not connected? A friend's system wouldn't start up, he said I could take a look, asking me to recover some family photos from his Hard Disk Drive. This machine had not been used for months. So far I have uncovered two issues and would be grateful to receive further guidance here to get this machine up and going.
service history: 3/10/2005 = repaired directory errors, charged clock battery, installed optical drive. action: Remove PRAM battery and it powers up. I like to tinker, and I'm recently out of work, stumbled upon a place with step by step instructions to take apart at <http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum13.html>. Followed those steps and removed the persistent RAM (PRAM) battery, put it all back together ( except for a few screws, oops! ) and it powers up, and seems to be charging the battery as an LED lights up now. Took it apart again and checked Hard Disk Drive connections, appears ok. Put the PRAM battery back in ( battery shows: 616-0144-A, match to slide 35 ) and now the system boots ok. Maybe resetting the connections got things going, maybe the battery needed a kick, who knows............
My Samsung ML-2510 stopped working when I installed snow leopard. I've tried the following, after finding others with similar problems (before snow leopard).
1. re-installing the driver from the Samsung website.
2. deleting the printer from the "printer & fax" pref, then adding it again, selecting "print using..." the new driver from the drop down menu.
3. downloading the Samsung Drivers from the apple website
