Mar 12, 2012I installed Lion on both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro maintained the rules I had set set up in Mail. My MacPro had a few issues in upgrading and I lost all my rules. Unlike Mobile Me, iCloud doesn't sync rules. How can I get them from my laptop to my desktop?

I've zipped up the Mail folder that was under Library and I found out how to access the hidden Library on my iMac. I see mail has changed a bit in Lion and before I unzip my mail folder into /Library/Mail, I want to make sure I won't screw anything up.

Jun 28, 2012I wasn't able to move the data from my old MacBook to my new MacBook running Lion, because I was using FileVault on the old system, and the Migration Assistant doesn't support home directories with FileVault enabled.
I've managed to migrate everything without issue -- Music, Photos, Movies -- all worked great. However, when I try to start Mail under Lion, I get prompted to reconfigure Mail. I've copied the ~/Library/Mail folder and the Preferences file (com.apple.mail.plist) to the new laptop (via SFTP) but Mail won't pick up from where it left off.

Jul 24, 2008I want to have rule that automatically moves email from my Inbox to a folder On my Mac after I reply to a message. This functionality is built into Smart Mailboxes but those won't actually move the email anywhere. Can this be done or is their a plugin/script out there perhaps?

Apr 10, 2012I am trying to speed up Re-Labeling all my metadata for every song in my library. Basically I need to create a workflow first, but I am having some troubles on how I should be doing it in Automater.
Example filename: "forrestaveryderty_driftinonby_flapjack.m4a" find all filenames that start with the same word before the First underscore (_) create a folder with that same word
copy files with the same word (BEFORE THE FIRST UNDERSCORE) to their corresponding folder name I then can use Media Rage to select the certain folder and and change the artist name all at once. and I would like it to do that with every file at one time.
again...
1: Find files with the same name before the first "underscore"
2: Create a a folder for every different name found (before the first underscore)
3: Copy found files (with same name before the first underscore) to the folder with the same name

Sep 7, 2009Has anyone else got this issue? You have a bunch of files you want to move to trash. You highlight them all, then right click, but "Move to trash" is missing from the menu.
If I highlight just one, the "move to trash" option is there. But disappears when multiple items are selected.
Anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix I can do to get "move to trash" for multiple selected items back?

Apr 29, 2012I have a 2nd monitor attached to my MBAir. I have icons (folders, a few files, and some aliases - not a lot!!) positioned on both monitors. I can work this way just fine for days. (Yes, I do restart nightly and, yes, after a basic restart all the icons stay put.) But sometimes, out of the blue, something happens that causes all the icons on the 2nd monitor to line up on the border between the two screen displays (i.e., almost off the 2nd monitor but not quite completely onto the MBAir's display).
This seems to be related to saving a file onto the desktop -- say, when I'm using Safari on the 2nd monitor and I drag the address bar address to save a webloc file. However, I can do this more often than not with no odd effects. (However, lately I've started dragging into a FOLDER on the desktop to avoid this.) Now, I just watched it happen when all I did was save a tiny .TXT file to the desktop. Of course I can fix things by dragging everything back to where it was (plus, I typically do a Restart before that since I figure something has gone amiss with the system so I'd like to clean things out). But what I'd really like is to figure out is why this is happening in the first place so that I can prevent it ... or, at least, so that I can stop doing whatever special behavior is causing it.

OS X :: Clean Install Of Snow Leopard - Best Way To Move Data And Apps
Dec 2, 2009I had issues with my old hard drive that kept from using time machine, address book syncing with mobile me, shutting down, disk repair, and permissions repair. Next, I did extensive research on each issue and realized the best thing to do was upgrade my hard-drive (from 110 Gigs to 500 Gigs and an additional gig of memory) and start fresh with Snow Leopard I used carbon copy to do a complete bootable copy of my previous hard drive. I do not have any time machine backups. I opted to save time and have a local shop (Onyx here in Atlanta) do the HD install I did not have them do a data move or port. So now I am left with getting all my necessary apps, preferences, and other data (photos, iTunes, etc...) either installed and updated or moved from the old hard-drive.
I've run across a few threads on here that talk about these items but I still have a few questions. Some are basic so please forgive me. Will I have any problems reinstalling the applications (like iWork, MS Office 08, Adobe Acrobat 8, Omni Focus, Omni Notetaker, and/or other paid apps) with the serial numbers used on my previous hard-drive? Is it better to reinstall these apps or move them over? How does one move over apps? Is it best to the migration tool? (I've never used the migration tool)
I don't want to corrupt my permissions or library files as I had done on my previous harddrive. So will using the migration tool to move apps over move over the corrupted or troubled library files associated with particular apps? Are there good threads that speak to these particular issues? Also, are there helpful guides, online bo oks or sites that speak to these issues? I do want to get a clean start but there are some things I dont' want to lose. Things like my bookmarks in Firefox and Safari, my OmniFocus database. Lastly, the technician thought my original 110 gig hard-drive was about physically die due to how slowly it shut down and given the issues I was having. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

May 12, 2010I've been trying to clean up a bunch of duplicates but when I highlight a photo and then take the option "move to trash" it simply moves the highlight to the next photo but the system acts as though I have moved the first photo to trash as the option to move to trash is now unavailable. I am running snow leopard but I am sure I have performed this task before in this version of the OS. Dragging a photo to trash simply doesn't work.

I'd like to keep the apps that are on the old drive but I understand that they won't work with Lion. The old drive from the G5iMac has two partitions with Tiger on one of them and nothing on the other one. I'm considering installing Snow Leopard on the other partition since it's documented that Snow Leopard will work with the apps that I used on Tiger. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer apps from the Tiger partition to the Snow Leopard partition? I've heard it said that the move must be from one *drive* to another--that Apple does not support the transfer of apps from one OS from one partition to another on the same drive. (The Mac Pro has 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processer with 3gb of RAM.)

Feb 4, 2012I have a rule that copies an email to the ON MY MAC and then another that MOVES TO A FOLDER in Mobileme. They are in this order. The problem is when I quit Mail the Folder I am copying to is changed to the Mobileme folder so I end up with a duplicate. It doesn't change until Mail is quit. The other odd part, there one arragement like this that did savef at some point and works as expected.
I have tried having both of these rules combined into 1 and have the same results.

Apr 11, 2012One IMAP account is intermittently losing all mail in inbox except for one message. After doing opening program the receive wheel spins for a long time, but at this point there are only 170 emails in the inbox because we moved all the rest to the on my mac inbox to try to solve this porblem. There are two accounts, both from the same provider, but one of them takes a long time to receive new mail. The wheel spins for a long time - each time it gets mail.
Several times after finishing receive cycle, all the mail that was in the inbox disappears, except for one. I was able to get the emails to retrn by going into settings>accounts> and changing a random setting and then changing it back the way it was. All settings appear to be correct and match the other other account that is working correctly.
