OS X :: Unable To Auto-login To Guest Account / Safari Wants To Use Keychain Login
Jan 6, 2009
I work for a company that has several Macs available for customers' use. These are basically demo-machines that they can play with, and at the end of each day, the machines are wiped and rebooted.
The way we do this is simple: the machines auto-login to the Guest account, which will wipe the account at the end of the day. Well, getting a few new Macs in this week, I simply copied over the entire Guest user account to the new machines to avoid reloading all the demo content, preferences, etc. And truthfully, the machines have been working great.
Except one thing. The computer keeps giving me that annoying message that says "Safari (or Finder, or System Preferences, or anything!) wants to use keychain 'login'". And asks for the login keychain password. Well here's the thing: the Guest accounts don't have passwords!
So I looked up a little bit on this topic, and did things like... Went to "Keychain List" in the Edit menu of Keychain Access, and deleted both the "login" and "system" keychains. No help. I went to Preferences in Keychain Access and said "Reset My Keychain". When doing this, however, it asks for the new password for the login keychain.
The problem with this is that I cannot leave the field blank! The Guest account doesn't have a password, so how am I supposed to not create a password?
i ve recently activated the default guest account in leopard. However even though when I check in the accounts.prefpane it says that it is on and its 'login only' and when I click on the account it says 'allow guests to login into this computer' and its on.
However when I boot up my machine and click on the guest icon, it wont let me in as it shakes the menu(login failed).
I have a lab of ~30 MacBook Airs running OS 10.9.4. We have MS students login using the Guest account with no password. The Guest account folder is deleted after every logout. Starting this week we are seeing keychain popups saying: A keychain cannot be found to store "Safari." or "Chrome." selecting Reset To Defaults makes no difference.Â
Opening Keychain Access is a slow process, but it does eventually come up. There is no Login keychain. And the Local Items and System Roots keychains are locked and do not open with a blank password.Â
Frankly, I don't want this guest account to be remembering any URL related password. So is there a way to shut down or highly restrict the Keychain functionality? If not, what do I need to do to fix or prevent all these popup messages and system pauses as the MacBook figures out for the nth time that Keychain isn't working as it expects it to?

I am unable to log in to my AT&T account through Safari, but am able to with Firefox. Can someone explain what my problem is and suggest a fix. The AT&T tech guy said it is a common problem with Safari.
I would like to be able to configure what applications start when it's logged on using the guest account. For normal accounts you would use the login items option in Users and Groups but this option is not available for the Guest user.Â
I saw this thread from 2010 - [URL] so downloaded the server admin tools for 10.7.2 but the guest account didn't appear in the user list so I presume this has been changed again since Snow Leopard.Â
I wanted to let me friend log into my MBA 2010's Guest account. Now I am forced into Disk Utilities after every restart, I can't log back in.What can I do?
I just noticed that on my login screen, "Guest" appears even though it is disabled. I have not tried to run it, but when I do click on it I get the message that the computer will reboot into the "Guest" mode. I stopped at that point. This can't be normal.

I have auto login on my profile and disable auto on the security page but still need to login every time I log out or shut down.I have also noticed that the general page of the security and privacy in Syste Prefs is different on my wife Macbook air and my pro....
my keychain is locked and in the prefs the list is empty. i try to repair and it says it can't find the "login.keychain". in the utlties fldr the file is"login_renamed.keychain" and when i change the file name to login.keychain it reverts back to the first as soon as i hit the repair button in keychain 'first aid'. i copied the file too thinking it was just a glitch and it renamed that one too.
Could some teach me on how to take a copy of my Bookmarks from Safari, then be able to transfer that on my other Safari app while I'm logged in on my guest log in?
And also on how to take my iTune playlist to my other iTune app on my guest log in please..
I keep getting this message. I just installed Leopard, but the problem began right before the install. Keychain "login" cannot be found to store "Safari", with the option to Restore Defaults or Cancel. It's driving me freaking crazy, I'm sure it's an easy fix. Let me know what to do. My Keychain Access is empty, showing no passwords or "login" I usually store passwords into my keychain, why aren't they still there? How does this problem start?
I went to the account tab in preferences but I don't see the guest account. did this change with Snow Leopard. I want to take the guest account off my laptop.
We are running 10.5 server and 10.4 client machines. 4 servers with accounts 2 work and 2 do not. Everything seems to be set up the same on all. The error we get is "The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server.
Hi! Im new to the forums but i really need help with something and i was hoping someone here could help me out. So I just installed Tech Tool Deluxe onto my macbook and then shut it down later. I went back to use it again and when i turned it on a login screen appeared asking me to put in my password. I did that and the screen turned blue (looking like it was loading) and then went back to the login screen. Every time i put in my password it just takes me back to the login screen. I have had my mac for a while and i dont want my hardrive to get wiped out so what do i do? Thank you for looking
G4 MDD networked with Mini for approx. 3 years now via a LinkSys BEFSR41 wired router. Ethernet cables are CAT6's with gold-plated ends. Did an erase/install (+ updates) of Panther on G4. ISP is Comcast Cable. Just upgraded my Motorola modem from Surfboard 5100 to SB 5101 yesterday. My network settings are ok...file sharing is turned on...I can ping each 'puter from the other (showing my connection is good).
I have internet access (showing that the router is still good according to Cisco). Now, however, I can't even bring up the window on the G4 asking for my pw....all I get is connection failed, no response from the server. From the Mini, I get Unknown User, incorrect password or login is disabled. I haven't a clue what the problem can be. Everything I do daily depends upon the network connection.
Ok so i installed new software onto my mac then it told me to restart so i did. When it ran up again it gave me the log in screen so I logged in and typed my password in. Then it just gives me the default background and a cursor. I can log in on my other two accounts but all of my data is on the account I cant log in on! I have got Filevault enabled if that could be the problem??
I am unable to log in to my IMac. When I try and log in to the Administrator account (my only account) it brings up a dialog box that says "You are unable to log in to the user account (user name) at this time with and OK button. Before this I was performing the Secure Empty Trash feature which froze on me. I tried exiting it out and logging out but was unable to. So I held the power button on the side of my IMac till it shut down. That is when this problem occurred.
My computer is: IMac G4 Version 10.4.11 Build 8S135 Serial Number QP40909NQB8
I am getting the error message "You can’t sign in at this time." when I try to log into my iCloud account. Repeatedly. Even changed the password to ensure it was correct.
I have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and Today when I logged in, it just froze on the apple OS X background. I waited 2 minutes, and nothing happened. It was weird because it's the first time it happened. Anyway, I turned the iMac off and re-tried. It did the exact same thing. So I turned it off, unplugged everything, waited around a minute, plugged it all back in, and it worked fine.
But yeah, just trying to work out why it would do that... because this is going to my brother and I don't want it to just crash when I give it to him.
I've recently started work with a new company and the previous employee has left, but has setup the adminstrative account on the work computer. When asked for a password, I don't know what he used. My boss and I have gone through some various passwords he used but none work. What are my options?
My girlfriends Macbook has this popup about every 2-3 minutes while youre browsing the web. She doesnt remember ever setting a "keychain" password, and tried to type in the password that she uses to log into her macbook, but apparently it's not the same password. What can I do to get rid of this if she doesn't know the password? Can I delete and then reinstall Safari? Do I need to reformat and install the entire OSX? Should I just use Firefox and forget about Safari?
I just used Migration Assistant to move my files from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro. I didn't know about the Filevault problem so when I tried logging in, I got the error message and I am unable to login to my account (the only one on the computer). The support page says to make a root user, but how can I do that when I can't even log in to my account. I dont have a disc copy of Lion I can use to start up with, only a copy of 10.6.
I am using Safari 5.1.4 on my mac OS X 10.7.3.Recently, I had to reset Safari and Empty cache, and since then I am unable to log into some websites (e.g. url... When I enter username and password it fails log in.However, when I enter the same username and password using Chrome, Opera on the same computer and another computer the log in works fine.Other websites are all working fine: such as access to bank, my company's vpn, other user forums, etc.I have done all of the following but none has helped:
1. re-reset Safari and re-emptied cache, restarted computer and restarted Safari
I shut my computer off and when I started it back up later the login screen had a guest login.. which i have never had before.. i just want to delete the guest login so that it is only my login that is aloud in.
