OS X V10.7 Lion :: Go From An Individual Email To Its Conversation View In Mail 5
Apr 21, 2012
I'm trying to figure out a way to go from an individually opened email to its conversation view. I know the Conversation View tickbox but that just groups the emails in the inbox. What I want is to go from an email that is opened in its own window to the email's conversation in the inbox.
Side note: I'm trying to do this as the CulturedCode Things' autofill puts a link to the individual email (or many links to individual emails in the conversation). When I click on it, it opens the email in its own window but I also want the context of the discussion. (And all this because gmail forced the ugly new look upon me - gmail+Mailplane was working just fine... )

I just installed Lion 10.7.3 on my machine and was really looking forward to the Conversation View in Mail since I often get involved in long threads with clients and only need to see the reply as it partains to the most recent email and not the entire thread at multiple quote levels. So, I was a bit disappointed to see that this did not happen after starting up Mail. I've checked all the Preferences and there certainly does not seem to be any setting about it. All I know is that most of the mail that quailify as Conversations still show the entire thread, just neatly laid out in the main panel without cutting out any "redundant text" as the Apple Lion website mentions. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I rebuild my mailbox?

When I view a received e-mail in Mail, it appears as part of a conversation. I want to be able to print single e-mails. In the View menu, 'Organize by Conversation' is checked by default. If I select an e-mail in my inbox, it appears on screen as part of the conversation, but with a gap between individual e-mails*. if I select the particular e-mail in the conversation that I want and go to Print, it prints the whole conversation. If I uncheck 'Organize by Conversation' and select an e-mail in the inbox, it again appears on screen as a part of the conversation, but without a gap between individual e-mails* and if I print, it still prints the whole conversation. * This, too, seems perverse. I would have thought that with 'Organize by Conversation' checked, the conversation should appear onscreen as continuous, whereas it appears with gaps, and, conversely, with 'Organize by Conversation' unchecked it should appear with gaps, whereas in fact it appears without gaps. I then found this:[URL] But nothing seems to work. I tried changing the 'View' setting in Preferences, I tried all the Expand and Collapse options in the View menu and all other options in the View menu, but the printing behaviour remains the same. The only method I have found for printing just part of a conversation is by selecting its text, pasting it into a text document and printing that.

I was viewing my mailboxes in a column on the left, then a column of the emails in my inbox then the right 2/3 of my screen showed the email massage contents. The area showing the content has disappeared and I have to double click to open an email in a separate window. How do I get the window back to the three areas(mailboxes, email list and selected massage content?

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) to Lion and there seems to be a bug in Mail where despite my repeatedly unchecking the "organize by conversation" option, it keeps defaulting back to this. I cannot figure out what to do to make it STAY unchecked -- I absolutely LOATHE "organize by conversation" and just want to use classic view without this and stay sorted by date received.

I'm able to open the app but it won't display any of the actual details of my emails. When I try to open them standalone the app crashes too. Tried googling for fixes, most of them include Terminal which seemingly won't open anymore either.
Must note that I haven't deleted anything or downloaded anything untoward since this error started occurring.
Pasted from the error log of my mail app:
Process: Mail [1332]
Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Identifier: com.apple.mail

I am trying to turn off whatever function puts boxes around paragraphs of text in mail. When I try to edit/manipulate text in emails that have been forwarded to me, it is difficult to do because every paragraph is set in an individual box. I can see how this might be useful for deleting whole paragraphs or moving them. But is there a way to turn off the function?

I just upgraded to Lion and not sure how to change the view in mail. I've read that the default setting is to have the view window to the right of the email list, but all that I have is a list or the classic view. How do I get back to the default setting?

I wanted to get started quickly so I put Mac Mail into "Classic" mode. Can't remember how but i think i was asked in a modal dialogue if I wanted to. Been through every Menu item and the Help and can't find any refernece to 3 column view except that it exists. I'm finding Lion a bit rough around the edges even though I'm on 10.7.4. The help is cursory like I said no reference to 3-column except how great it is and can't find a manual for Mac Mail at apple.com.

I have several iMacs in my office with Lion and Mail 5.1. I have a user who wants to View attachments as Icons to ensure all are attached prior to sending. Unlike all the other iMacs, hers does not have the option "View in Place" and "View as Icon" when she right-clicks on the attachment.
I have found in other posts that you cannot set a defaul to ensure Icons or View in Place will always occur, and that the default depends on the type and size of attachment. I am not sure of that logic, but she can't even choose on an individual email basis. How can those options be enabled?

Since switching to Lion, I've noticed that Notes are now visible in the Inbox view in Mail. Every time I create a new one (and I use Notes a lot!), it is visible in the Inbox
I want to switch this off - I only want to see Notes if I click on the Notes mailbox!

I have received an email in graphical HTML format — a series of venues and dates for a band in the form of a grid. It shows up beautifully in webmail, but in Apple Mail it shows uselessly as unformatted and unpunctuated text. Is there any setting in Mail prefs., or some other subterfuge, that would allow such emails to show properly in Mail?

It worked fine for a long time.Last week it started to fail to send outgoing emails I have deleted the account and added it back. Also have deleted the outgoing mail server.(when you delete a mail account it doesn't automatically delete the out going mail server)I have another computer with the same email account and it works fine Finally I unchecked use SSL and The account can now send emails.User name and password are set correctly.I talked to apple and they are blaming it on Frontier.I have read other posts here about ssl problems with 10.7.2 and Imap accounts?

I've had this problem with every single MacBook I've owned running on Leopard, Snow Leopard and now on my Lion one too!Does anyone know how to stop it? It seems to be worse than ever on my new Lion OS MacBook Air.I have Yahoo!, iCloud, Hotmail and BT Internet email addresses in my mail app. Every two minutes the dock icon starts bouncing and it's requesting the password for one of them. Everytime I tick the box saying "remember this in my keychain" but no sooner have I done that and it pops back up again requesting the password that I have just entered. I am entering the correct passwords and all email addresses are active. It's really winding me up at the moment as I keep having to quit the mail app because I can't stop it from asking for passwords. This MacBook is brand new. I only got it delivered from Apple last week!

I have an IMAP email account that's over a decade old. It's going away soon so I'm trying to figure out how to get a complete local copy of all that email. There are a total of around 100 folders with anywhere from 5 to over 2000 emails in each folder.
The problem: there's email on the server that isn't showing up in Mail. For instance one folder (according to the webmail interface) has 771 messages. Mail says that folder has 700 messages.Looking at the webmail interface I can easily find several of the 71 emails that are not appearing in Mail. In Mail, if I select the folder and "Get Account Info" and look at the Quotas section, it lists the correct number of email messages (771). If I rebuild the folder, as it's being rebuilt the blue progress bar at the bottom left of Mail says there are 771 incoming messages. But when it's done, I can only see 700.
I just double checked on a second computer (MacBook Pro, also latest 10.7 version & Mail) and it's the same there, it only sees 700 messages. Now, repeat this times the roughly 100 folders .What's going on here? Why isn't Mail downloading or displaying these emails?

my colleague has set up an email account on his macbook pro 10.7 and when he sends an email out the recipients see the email address as glen with one n rather than glenn. so when people reply they send to something that is not there and get a return to sender. This is strange as the sent address in the settings is glenn not glen.
This isn't a server issue as it is on his work imac g5 computer and sends correctly. It must be an error when putting the info in but I can't see where. it is an outlook Exchange mail server and not with our company so i can't look at the settings in that.is there a simple way to sort this out or, if not how can I remove the email account, set it up again but retain the old emails?

Up until today my MAIL app in my iMac let me use an email address that is from the AOL.com group (netscape.net)…I cannot send emails now because I can't get the computer to connect to the server. My iPad will….but not the desktop. I tried using a different server name; smtp.nestcape.net, which is the one I used in the iPad…but the iMac won't let me change it to that one..so back to the old smtp.aol.com……Still my MAIL app is not recognizing this or letting me connect!?!. I tried creating a new password at the wedpage of that email account.. successfully..but it has made no difference. I am stumped and have wasted half the day trying to deal with this.
