OS X V10.7 Lion :: Apple Mail - Set / Keep View To Expand All Conversations?
Jun 9, 2012
I want to keep the mail view expanded but everytime I handle a message, the view reverts to "Organize by Conversation". Is there a way to keep the view set as Expanded?

I'm getting super annoyed since apple has started condensing the conversation in mail in the view window.Â
They have added the "See More from xxxxxxx" in the middle on the converations view pane.Â
How can you have those always automatically expand? It's a super pain, because every single conversation I have to look at what I last wrote.

I don't like that conversations are linked together in mail. It always scares me that I sent something to someone who it wasn't intended for. Sometimes the conversations are relevant but most of the time one email has absolutely nothing to do with another email so I don't see why they are linked together. I have looked all through the mail preferences but I don't see any options to change it. Â

I use Outlook in my PC for checking work related e-mails. I like my Outlook Inbox to be viewed like this ---> View > Arranged by > From. I tried the same in my Apple Mail like this ---> View > Sort by > From. Also checked the "Organize by Thread" But it doesn't seem same like how Outlook arranged me mails.

I just upgraded to Lion and not sure how to change the view in mail. I've read that the default setting is to have the view window to the right of the email list, but all that I have is a list or the classic view. How do I get back to the default setting?

I inadvertently hit some random key and can no longer see my mail in column view - the only way to see it is to go into File>New Viewer Window but this does not stay that way.

I was viewing my mailboxes in a column on the left, then a column of the emails in my inbox then the right 2/3 of my screen showed the email massage contents. The area showing the content has disappeared and I have to double click to open an email in a separate window. How do I get the window back to the three areas(mailboxes, email list and selected massage content?

I'm trying to figure out a way to go from an individually opened email to its conversation view. I know the Conversation View tickbox but that just groups the emails in the inbox. What I want is to go from an email that is opened in its own window to the email's conversation in the inbox.Â
Side note: I'm trying to do this as the CulturedCode Things' autofill puts a link to the individual email (or many links to individual emails in the conversation). When I click on it, it opens the email in its own window but I also want the context of the discussion. (And all this because gmail forced the ugly new look upon me - gmail+Mailplane was working just fine... )

I wanted to get started quickly so I put Mac Mail into "Classic" mode. Can't remember how but i think i was asked in a modal dialogue if I wanted to. Been through every Menu item and the Help and can't find any refernece to 3 column view except that it exists. I'm finding Lion a bit rough around the edges even though I'm on 10.7.4. The help is cursory like I said no reference to 3-column except how great it is and can't find a manual for Mac Mail at apple.com.

I have several iMacs in my office with Lion and Mail 5.1. I have a user who wants to View attachments as Icons to ensure all are attached prior to sending. Unlike all the other iMacs, hers does not have the option "View in Place" and "View as Icon" when she right-clicks on the attachment.
I have found in other posts that you cannot set a defaul to ensure Icons or View in Place will always occur, and that the default depends on the type and size of attachment. I am not sure of that logic, but she can't even choose on an individual email basis. How can those options be enabled?

Since switching to Lion, I've noticed that Notes are now visible in the Inbox view in Mail. Every time I create a new one (and I use Notes a lot!), it is visible in the Inbox Â
I want to switch this off - I only want to see Notes if I click on the Notes mailbox!Â

I have received an email in graphical HTML format — a series of venues and dates for a band in the form of a grid. It shows up beautifully in webmail, but in Apple Mail it shows uselessly as unformatted and unpunctuated text. Is there any setting in Mail prefs., or some other subterfuge, that would allow such emails to show properly in Mail?

I have been using Gmail for about 7 months, now. I am using it in conjunction with a MacBook Pro (15 inch, mid-2010, i5, 2.53 GHz, running OS 10.7.4 and the current version of Mail) and an iPhone 4S (iOS 5.1.1 with the pre-installed Mail app). I, rarely, use Gmail's web interface and prefer to view and manage my mail using my devices.
I, recently, discovered a Gmail behavior that I wasn't aware of. Whenever I deleted an email from my Inbox on my MacBook, it wouldn't, actually, delete from Gmail. Instead, a copy of the mail would remain in Gmail's "All Mail" folder. It seems that Gmail and I have different ideas about deleting. When I delete, it means that I would, actually, like to get rid of it, not hide it somewhere else. After sorting through the, almost, 3000 emails in the "All Mail" folder and re-deleting everything that I thought I had already deleted (a pain, to be sure), I found the solution to my problem. In Apple Mail, I checked both Trash options in my account preferences then selected Gmail's "Trash" folder and used the "Use This Mailbox For" option to map it to Mail's trash (similarly, I mapped the trash folder on my iPhone to Gmail's trash folder). Now, everything I delete is going to the same place (and actually getting deleted).

Apple Mail has a preference to 'Trust junk mail headers in messages' but I can not find a list of what those headers are.By trial and error I've learned the "X-Spam-Flag: YES" will work (exactly that, no extra info), but I'd like to know what other options there are... particularly if I can send a score/rating back and have it look at that. But I can't find a list of supported headers. The Internet is full of "common spam headers" and yet none of them actually seem to work and lots of people who can't get it working with spamassassin which is incredibly common.

Moved to my new Mac Book Pro from Linux 3 days ago. My first Apple computer.Wonderful machine and OS. Set up my G Mail account on Apple Mail with the wizard and was receiving e mails no problem. Today all of the mail from both my inbox and sent mail disappeared. I did notice that both my incoming mails and sent mails end up accessible in the folder G Mail/All Mail-- the messages from both inbox and sent mail that disappeared from their respective boxes are in there. In reviewing my various mail settings I notice that Apple Mail set the account up as IMAP rather than POP. I also noticed that there was no way to change this i.e. edit the account. I am not that well versed on differences between POP and IMAP. I also tried rebuilding the inbox after I noticed that the contents disappeared and it made no difference. It is essential that I keep copies of everything on my local machine as well as the server.

There seems to be a pattern with major updates from Apple and the ability of the servers providing the content - be it iTunes or iOS or Mac OS updates - I have been unable to download successfully the larger updates but smaller (22MB for AirPort Utility) work fine. The annoying thing is that in almost all cases the error doesn't occur until after the download is complete - meaning it takes up all the time and bandwidth etc with no result and you have to start all over again.
This has happened to enough people and with enough different software releases that I posit that it is not the result of any particular configuration of networking and or hardware and or firmware and or OS version etc - but that the it is a systemic issue on the provider side of things.
Perhaps they (Apple's content providers) should stagger access or something - by time zone - or Apple should release updates over the course of a week - not all on the same day. I would much rather get a message that the server is busy try agian later - or have one update a day - and have it work on the first try - that to waste time retrying the same downloads over and over again.

basically my wallpaper image flashes and any windows I have minimized to the Dock expand whenever iTunes changes tracks. It's not a huge problem, but it can be a bit of a pain (there, it just happened again, I had to minize stuff in order to get back to this window).
P.S.: I listed the topic under Lion because it never happened before I upgraded to it.

I wasn't sure if it wouls be a bad idea if I wiped the interal hard drive while I'm booting from a recovery disk, then made a RAID 0 with the internal drive and my FW800 external drive. I'm nearing my max for the internal drive. I have a second FW400 drive backing up with Time Machine. I was hoping to just wipe, make the raid volume, and then restore from the Time Machine backup.Â
I guess even before that, my FW800 is not working in Lion. I reformatted while connected by USB, reset power management, and reset PRAM, but the firewire bus panics and takes out the Time Machine on FW400 as well. Is there a fix for this somewhere that I'm missing? I bought the FW800 drive for the above reason, only to run into a wall trying to make it work. I really don't want to do a RAID 0 with a USB connection.Â
I'm not going to try setting up the RAID 0 until I get the FW800 drive working reliably, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone.Â

I just installed Lion 10.7.3 on my machine and was really looking forward to the Conversation View in Mail since I often get involved in long threads with clients and only need to see the reply as it partains to the most recent email and not the entire thread at multiple quote levels. So, I was a bit disappointed to see that this did not happen after starting up Mail. I've checked all the Preferences and there certainly does not seem to be any setting about it. All I know is that most of the mail that quailify as Conversations still show the entire thread, just neatly laid out in the main panel without cutting out any "redundant text" as the Apple Lion website mentions. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I rebuild my mailbox?

I'm using Apple Mail 5.2 on a MacBook Pro 13" with OS 10.7.3. I have 4 email accounts (3 x exchange and 1 x POP). The sent box for one of my exchange accounts has disappeared from the 'Sent' list, where all my account's sent boxes are listed. It is visible on my iphone, which makes me think it is a Mail issue rather than a server issue. I've tried restarting the app and rebuilding the mailbox but nothing will make it reappear.

Up until I reloaded lion a few weeks ago, I had my att.net account set up in apple mail. There were no problems. I had my folders set up and it showed my sent mail and junk mail. After reloading, I knew I would have to set up my folders again but I no longer have access to my junk mail and sent mail. What am I doing wrong?

I just moved over to Lion and was using the latest version of Mail (5.2) to compose a message. When I first used the photobrowser, it took a while to find my iPhoto collection and showed the message "no media was found". OK this may seem very petty, but this is dreadful English, 'Media' being a plural. Surely Apple would want to know about this and to fix this ("no media found" being the best alternative in my opinion).

I am a relatively new (reintroduced user to Apple), since my Apple IIe back in the early 90's. I love my desktop mac thus far and I utilize my Apple Mail for the majority of my work day. We use the address book to store all our business contacts and someone asked how to share an address book contact via email within an already drafted email. I could not figure out how to do this without going into the address book, clicking 'share', then copying the contact card in the new email draft it opened and pasting it into the already composed message. Is there a more streamlined way to do this?

I hope it doesn't turn out that the user is the thing that is "unusual."Â Â
Background:Â Devices: MBP, iPad, iPhone, iMac
Mail accounts: Gmail, mobileme, Yahoo
MBP settings: uses "default ports", SSL, and user name and password - Advanced Tab: Port 993 and SSL
iPad/iPhone settings: SMTP server settings - grayed-out - with SSL checked and Port 465Â Â Â
As of last night, I found four messages that were stuck in my Sent box, with the spinning gear that would not stop. This only happens when using my Yahoo account, and it only happens when sent from my MPB. It is also only related to outbound messages. Â
Now for the part that has me perplexed. My password for Yahoo (web), is the same as the password on my MBP (Apple Mail). The passwords that I have on the iPhone and iPad, are the same for both, but they're different than the password for the previous two that I mentioned. When I changed the password on my MBP to match the one that's on my mobile devices, it came up with an error for an incorrect username or password.  Â
How can I have different passwords and still have mail working? What am I missing? Also - more to the point of my issue, can anyone offer some suggestions as to why the outbound side of Apple Mail, is not working for Yahoo?Â
