OS X V10.7 Lion :: Frequent Dropped WiFi Connection From IMac?
Mar 22, 2012
Since installing Lion I lose my wireless internet connection frequently - only from the IMAC, not from the IPAD or Dell. I called support and after quite a lengthy "try this" session, I was told that this was a known problem. I can always get it back but sometimes have to unplug the router.

I have a linksys BEFSX41 v2.1 router (not wireless, hard wired) router. Ever since I hooked my macbook to it is appears that it drops and the reconnects regularly in regards to iChat. I am using my AIM screen name, and I receive this message "Error: Serv:RequestTimeout" frequently. This makes it tough because I can never tell if the person got my last IM or not, and since my screen name signs off and then back on again all the time it drives my friends insane.
I can get AV chat going, and I can use screen share with other macs. I enabled UPnP on my router in hopes that would work but it does not appear to have fixed it. I tried opening up a port that I heard AIM uses (5190) but that didnt fix things either. I'm thinking opening ports probably wont work since if I can IM people, or AV chat without having opened any ports then the program must be already opening ports as needed on its own.

I have 3 macs working off my wireless router. Two out of three are still working fine, but the third (an iMac G5) keeps losing its network connection and either won't find the network or, if it does, will not allow me to rejoin it, even after entering the relevant key/password. It has been in the same location in my house and has worked fine for the last five years. But oddly, if I move the G5 to within a few feet of the router it starts working again (though sometimes seems unable to find the network, although when it does it will let me join it, hassle free).Â
Have spoken to some Apple guys and, following their advice, have gone into SYSTEM PREFERENCES, NETWORK, LOCATION but having got that far a pop-up appears telling me that an application has changed my network settings. Zapping OK, this dialog box just keeps re-appearing and the only way I can get out of this corner is by 'force quit'. Â

Since iTunes 9 came out the improved Home Sharing features has been quite useful to me, but today when I re-formatted my computer I ran into some problems. Both computers are using Windows XP, one is connected via Ethernet and the other one--which I reformatted, let's call it Computer B--connects to the router wirelessly.
I have activated each computer for Home Sharing properly but from Computer B, I can't access Computer A's library. On Computer A, I can access Computer B's shared library and listen to music as normal, at least for a moment - after being connected to the library for a period of about two minutes, it will suddenly disconnect itself and the icon will disappear so I am unable to reconnect. It's strange how I can connect to the library perfectly and just out of nowhere it will disconnect.

I have a new (June 09 model) 15" MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz and I'm experiencing frequent (every 3-5 minute) drop outs on my wireless internet connection, but only when I'm running Mac OS X-- my Windows Vista Ultimate partition is operating flawlessly. After Googling, I have come to the conclusion that this is extremely common in MBPro's since there is such a saturation of search results?
Background on the wireless networks used:
- home: 128-bit WEP-open
- work: WPA2-Enterprise
Again, I haven't experienced a single disconnect when running the following:
- Vista - wireless
- Vista - wired
- Mac OS X - wired

I've got my mom's Gateway Quad-Core desktop PC (running Windows 7) hooked up at my house for the time being. I have an Airport Extreme as my router, and also an Airport Express used as a network extender. I hooked up the Airport Express this morning, and that's all configured correctly and working properly (so it's not an out-of-range issue). The Gateway Desktop has a full 5-bar connection, and is running a USB D-Link DWA-140 wireless network adapter. The problem is that it cuts the connection literally about every 30 seconds.
Here's what I've done so far:
1) Installed the updated D-link drivers. Didn't work.
2) Installed the NEWER, updated Ralink drivers (parent company for D-link...the DWA-140 adapter has the RT-2870 inside, so I used the appropriate driver, which I thought surely would fix it...that's what everyone told me to do thus far). Didn't work.
3) Checked my USB Power Settings in control panel and set them to never put the ports to sleep. Rebooted. Didn't work.
4) Right-clicked the adapter under "devices" and checked the power management settings. Set them to "maximum performance" (that's all I could do).

I got my Kindle 3 today (yes I bought one over the ipad simply due to the price) and Ive spent some time trying to connect it to my imacs airport wi-fi. I have tried Customer service over at Amazon but sadly, no reply as of yet. It seems that the Kindle wont connect to "enterprise or peer-to-peer networks". So everytime, I enable sharing and my network shows up - it either wont accept the password or it tells me that "Kindle does not currently connect to enterprise or peer-to-peer networks"

On startup the WiFi connection symbol initially is full and black and then goes grey with in a few seconds. If I click the WiFi symbol the drop down menu shows my WiFi network which I click put in WEP code but then I get a message after a few seconds that the connection has timed out. All other Macs in the house connect to the WiFi fine.

My Linksys WRT610N with the latest firmware worked fantastically on multiple Windows 7-based ThinkPad. However, three (3) different iMac's have had the very same problem of dropping the connection and of my having to powercycle both my cable modem and the W610 router for it to work again at all! Once it drops the active connection, that's it. I have tried a few different settings and nothing has made a difference.
Can you maybe help point me in the right direction or should I just ditch it for an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule? One additional point: It works worst in the 5GHz frequency band, even though there are none in my neighborhood, and if there are, they have their SSID's (network name) hidden. The 2.4GHz band is extremely crowded where I am which makes it difficult to enjoy my WiFi connection.

For the last 2 weeks my wifi connection has been playing up. I use Wifi and my iMac connects directly to my router and it works slow if at all as some pages don't load. I can get by but its frustrating using it and this problem is specific to my iMac as every other device using Wifi works fine. These devices, that work fine, include mobile phones and a MacBook Pro.Â
I'm using Chrome and its the same with other browsers. I usually get a "resolving host' message in the taskbar when loading pages. Sometimes pages do not load at all or they are slow to load and at times some elements like images don't appear. My OS X is 10.9.4.Â

I have a Mac Mini, it is hooked to a D-link router with a 50ft ethernet cable. I have never had problems in the past using my MacBook over wifi, but it seems like I am constantly losing my Internet connection on the Mac Mini. I have no problems when I am on it, but if I leave a download going, then come back, it seems to almost always pause or cancel the download. It has happened downloading songs from Napster through Safari, it happens in iTunes, and in Software Update.
OSX should not go to sleep if it's downloading a file, right? I even installed Caffeine to make sure it stays awake. Any ideas on what the issue might be? Or what I should try to do to figure it out?

I have a new Mac Mini and it's connects to the internet via Wifi with no issues and the internet works fine. After it's been connected for awhile I'll pull up Safari and it won't load a page but shows that it's connected. If I disable the Wifi and re enable it, it'll pull up the webpage with no problem. All other devices connect and hold the connection but the Mini including Win 7 systems and Android devices.

I recently switched cable providers to Time Warner. They set up a Ubee cable modem and all devices (IPhone, IPad, AppleTV, etc) are all connecting to the wireless network except my IMac.  I tried renewing my DHCP lease, updating to OS X Maverick but every time I try and connect I get an error message that says "Connection Time Out".Â

Today I was working normally on my MacBook and then suddenly the page www.fanfiction.net stopped working, and everytime I reloaded or tried a different link of the same page I got the following message: "Safari can't open the page url... because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again."I cleaned my cache and tried opening the webpage with Firefox and Opera and I get the same result.I have a Windows 7 partition and the webpage won't work either. While looking for a solution I notice that many webpages are not opening and I get the same message. I see that this has happened to many people, but I have not found a solution. I'm in China right now, it's the only real difference I can think, but I have been here almost a week and this happened until now.Mi mac is the MacBook Pro 15 inch and it's running with Mac OS X Lion 10.7. The system is not showing any updates to Safari.

This weekend I upgraded my Macs to OSX Lion 10.7.3 and most everything is great. I spent some time trying to figure out why iCloud's Find My iPhone app will find my wife's MacBook Air and my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1) but will not find my 2008 vintage MacBook Pro. I finally found one misconfigured AppleID and corrected that which then caused Find My Mac to report the MacBook Pro as "Offline" when it was clearly connected to the Internet (via Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule) and even logged in to iCloud itself. On a whim, I turned on WiFi and that did it. The MacBook Pro is now found and its location reported. I have not found any caveats about the Find My Mac requiring WiFi.

My airport keeps dropping and it is wasting so much of my time. I have tried all the methods suggested online and none of the worked. I want to go back to snow leopard but I don't have my disc. And can I have my money back from Lion? I really will not use that until it is fixed.

I've iMac OS X Lion 10.7.3 latest version desktop. For couple of months, I'm dealing with dropping wifi connection during working. Every a few minutes, even during surfing though internet pages, wifi connection drops. When you look at the signal level etc.. everything is seems to be fine, but it is not possible to connect internet after close-open wifi. For a while, connection drop happens again.

After switching to a new provider and getting a new dsl modem (a fritz!box fon 7390) I tried to setup my homenetwork again. Now the weird thing is: my Mac Mini running OSX Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet over its ethernet port, only when using a WiFi connection...When it's connected with ethernet it can reach the dsl modem without any problems, but it can't ping/telnet or anything else through, only over WiFi... As long as I use the mini servers WiFi connection everything works fine, but that doesn't make any sense to me.I've checked the servers setting and the Fritz!box settings and I can't seem to find anything obvious. Of course I could just go on and use the WiFi connection...
ps: all the other computers can connect fine using either wifi or regular lan connection... I even tried the exact same cable with another laptop just to make sure...

I am on a Mac Mini connected to the Net via a FON wireless router and Ethernet directly to my broadband modem. I have had problems with both the modem and an Airport Extreme, which eventually died, but I am back up again with the modem via the FON router. The odd thing is that I can't get Ethernet to work over a direct connection to the modem. Diagnostics tells me that the ISP and Internet fails. I can connect to the modem over Ethernet, however, change its settings etc. in my browser. There are solutions mentioned here involving changing the etc/authorization file, but wouldn't that also affect the WiFi if that was the problem?Â
In short, Ethernet connection to modem works. WiFi connection to FON router and then to the ISP and Internet works. But the Ethernet configuration does't go that last bit, it only works locally. Using that route, I can't connect to the outside world. I have restarted the modem, the computer etc., but that should not be the problem as both works over WiFi, using the same settings for the modem. How do I best troubleshoot this? I am getting an AirPort Express, perhaps it will work better with the modem that the computer itself, but I doubt it.

I've had the same internet connection for 5 years. Same wifi. Same password.Â
My previous mbp / os had no problems connecting and *staying* connected.Â
Now, with my 8-month-old MBP / OS10.8.5, I regularly get bounced off wifi and when I try to reconnect, I see my wifi in the networks list, but I get "a connection timeout occurred" fail.Â
Incidentally, my iPhones (4 and 5) over five years have *never* encountered this issue. They are on the exact same wifi / password / network as my MBP.

I am having internet connection issues with my MacBook Pro 2011 - running the latest version of Lion OSX. My connection cuts out regularly (every 10 - 15 minutes) despite having a full wifi signal. It is happening on two different routers, in two different locations with two different ISP's.Â
When I run Network Diagnostics ISP is the test that fails, but after a couple of seconds diagnostics fixes it until the next 10 - 15 minutes. The only other alternative is turning wifi off and on. Both of these only last for the 10 - 15 minutes before it cuts out again.Â
It is very frustrating and research online seems to indicate it is a Lion issue. I have made an appointment with a genius, but browsing online it appears there is no solution. It is not acceptable.
