OS X V10.7 Lion :: Erased External HD - Now Doubled In Capacity?

Mar 4, 2012

I've got an old - 2 years - Maxtor 500GB USB external unit attached to my iMac running OSX 10.7.3 - which is used for backups. I received a couple of errors when copying some files so decided it would be best to erase it and start again with it. I used Disc Utility to erase it ( Mac OS Extended Journaled) but - and lord knows how I did this - its now telling me its got a capacity of 901 GB...

OS X :: NTFS External Drive Erased After Opened On Mac?

Jul 13, 2009

I have a Buffalo 1TB external hard drive that contained some H.264 video clips shot on Canon 5D, .r3d red material and other video related stuff. It was formatted with NTFS and everything had been written on a PC running Windows Vista.

The other day I opened the drive up on my Mac (with Leopard) and looked at some of the H.264 video clips, they were all in a folder called DCIM. Then i ejected it and connected it via USB to my PC again. Strange things started to happen. The drive ran very slowly but showed all the folders and files, except for the one folder DCIM that contained the H.264 clips that I viewed on the Mac. Then the folder showed for some seconds but disappeared.

Mac Mini :: Icons Erased From Desktop - Cannot Find External HD?

Dec 5, 2010

I got a 1.5tb external hdd. My buddy loaded it up with tons of movies for me. Worked great for about one week. I hate my desktop being cluttered with icons so I decided to erase the icon on my desktop. Now I can't find my hard drive no matter what I do. Finder: it's not there. Disk utility: it's not there. It is plugged into the wall and thus a blue light emitting from the front and it is clearly plugged into the USB on the back of my Mac mini. I just can't find it anymore no matter what I do.

OS X :: Time Machine Erased External Hard Drive?

Nov 10, 2007

I started installing Leopard last night before going out. I came back late last night (or early this morning) and sat down to explore the new OS. There was a pop-up about using Time Machine with my external hard drive. I clicked okay.

It began loading and running Time Machine before telling me my external hard drive was the wrong format or something. It then gave me the option to delete (which I assumed ment delete the Time Machine files from my external hard drive). I clicked on it.

A few minutes later I realized that it had erased my entire external hard drive, renaming it "Time Machine Backups". I had JUST moved my entire music and movie collection to that hard drive and am wondering if there's any way I can recover those files.

When I tried to empty my trash after that I could not remove the files because I did not have sufficient privileges. Using the rm -rf code I was able to remove everything except my itunes library. Anyone have any suggestions how to get my itunes library out of my trash? It only shows up when the external drive is plugged in.

OS X Mavericks :: Recover Data From Erased External Drive

Dec 6, 2014

I have an external USB HDD that was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), it was accidentally erased (using Disk utility) and re-formatted to FAT32. the HDD has not been used since (other than to try and recover the data using various tools), so no new data was been written to it.

Any methods that could be used to recover the data from the drive?i've tried DiskWarrior but that can't do anything with the drive as it's not a "macintosh disk".

Hardware :: Seagate External Hard Drive Erased Pictures

Apr 8, 2009

I got a Seagate 500GB external hard drive recently. I'm looking to delete files from my Mac after I back them up on the external hard drive. I tested this with one picture and after I deleted the picture then backed up the hard drive, the hard drive 'erased' the picture. I did talk to Seagate and the guy said it wasn't actually erased, it just went into history. (Although I can't find history and forgot to ask :/)

So, my question is - How can I put files on the external hard drive then delete them from my Mac and when I later back up my computer, keep the files on my external hard drive that were previously deleted from my computer. I know the files will be in history but I'd like for all of them to be in one place instead of searching through history for maybe one file here and there. I hope this makes sense!!! (I have Leopard OS)

Mac Pro :: How To Make Performance Doubled

Apr 18, 2008

I finally bought my Mac Pro last week, and needless to say it continues to impress me. I was transferring some files from my 1tb Seagate 7200.11 to my boot drive consisting of two 74gb Raptors in software raid 0. Since i've had it, the 4gb files have always transferred at about 60mb/s, but tonight the speed somehow managed to double to a maximum of 127mb/s (and a sustained 100mb/s). Why would the transfer rate double in speed?

OS X :: Mp3 Collection Has Doubled In Size?

Apr 25, 2009

I searched for this up and down and for some reason can't come to a solution.

I was making a double-backup of my music folder (merely copying the folder over to another external hard drive), and I noticed my mp3 collection has doubled in size!

I've tried finding duplicates but it pulls up a very short list of the usual suspects that I know aren't dupes. I looked in my music folder directly only to see my regular mp3s with no duplicated files.

How do I get rid of these "phantom" mp3s?

Mac Pro :: 64bit Kernel With Drobo Recommendation For High Capacity External Storage?

Dec 4, 2010

I currently have external storage devices by DataRobotics - 2 DroboPro and 1 DroboElite. I bought the new MacPro 2 months ago and have been having problems with the Drobo devices disconnecting constantly. After a lot of diagnostics including Apple replacing the logic board in my MacPro, it was identified that the issue was with the iSCSI initiator that DataRobotics uses. It is not 64bit kernal compatible and as a result, the drives disconnect randomly especially when moving data from one external drive to the other. I am forced to boot the MacPro in 32bit kernel mode for the drives to work properly. DataRobotics is not committing to fixing the 64bit kernel issue so I'm now looking to replace this technology.

I found some interesting technology by Netgear and was considering buying their product, however, I had the worst experience ever with dealing with pre-sales & technical support department, after dealing with 4 different individuals, I concluded that they have no clue about their own products, the staff is so junior, it's as if I called a completely different company when talking about their own product. I am therefore going to stay away from that company.

When I first got it, it was the quietness and boot time which I was impressed with more than anything. Now it's noisier and boot times have doubled. I have noticed that the fans for for HD and CPU constantly spin at 1200rpm or more, with no applications open and as soon as I switch on my iMac.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Hard Drive Capacity Displays Incorrectly?

Jun 7, 2012

I have been using Parallels Desktop for a while now and I was trying to free up some space on my hard drive.  I deleted the parallels.log file which was approx. 45 GB in size.  Upon emptying my trash, it was still in use by a service.  So I forced it to delete by choosing secure erase trash.  It took too long so I was going to stop the service and remove it without securely erasing it. However when I cancelled the process, it took even longer.  I had 45 GB free of a 500 Gb hard drive before I started and I was wanting to free enough for a Windows Bootcamp with a 60 GB HDD for development purposes.  After it finished, the finder was stating that I had 37.5 GB free.  Upon investigation and running the daily weekly and monthly scripts as well as Onyx to empty the trash again.  I was still showing the same amount.  As I removed other items I no longer needed the free space increased.  I ran disk utility to verify permissions and the disk, but upon running a gui program to find large files, it only stated that my drive was ~465 GB, which since it is usually 499.97 GB this is obviously where my problem is.  How can I get my Mac to rediscover that lost hard drive space?

OS X :: Disk Utility Erased All Data?

May 22, 2009

I just bought a new WD hard disk and backed up all my data to it (80 GB). I then performed a clean install on my Macintosh HD.

Before I restored my data to the internal drive, I thought it would be a good idea to copy my fresh installation to a new partition on the external disk.

So I booted up disk utility to check if partitioning would affect my data. Using the partition tool, I clicked the plus sign (without applying changes). Disk utility said that if I add a partition, it would simply add a new volume and that the previous volume would not be erased. I clicked apply, and now there is nothing left of my data in the original partition.

Can I get it back? Undo the partition, or file recovery?
