OS X V10.7 Lion :: Available Disk Space Greater Than Capacity?

Feb 9, 2012

I'm new to this whole mac thing, and maybe I'm overlooking something....but this just doesn't seem right. If I click on the hard disk of my new 13" MBA 256G, and choose get info, I get the following:

Capacity: 250.14GB
Available: 296.42GB

How the heck does Lion think that I have more free space than the drive can even hold?

OS X :: Time Machine Eating Disk Space / Eat GB's Of Hard Disk Space While Preparing Backup

Dec 11, 2009

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Capacity And Available Space Info

Aug 14, 2009

I have a Macbook PRO 17" with a 160GB hard drive. When I click on the "Macintosh" icon on my desktop and "get info" it says that my capacity is 148.73GB and that I've used 134.28GB only leaving me 14.45GB of availability. For the life of me I can't figure out how the 134GB is calculated. If I click on my username and "get info" the folder size is 103GB. So where is the other 30GB used up at?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Available Disk Space Incorrect?

May 14, 2012

I hav a 500 GB internal hard drive on my Mac Book Pro running Lion.

In any Finder window or "get info" on my hard drive, it says I have 465 GB available (only 34 GB actually used). In Disk Utility, it says I only have 121 GB available and 379 used.

When I "calculate all sizes" of the folders in the root directory, it's less than 280 GB, so there must be 100 GB of hidden files somewhere.

I also suspect that these hidden files are taking up a lot of space on my Time Machine. Yes, I've already run disk utility, repaired disk, emptied trash, restarted, etc. but something weird is going on.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Not Showing Free Space

Apr 21, 2012

I just cleaned out my HDD on my 2008 MBP and am still getting about the same amount of available space as I did when I started. I must have cleaned anywhere from 50-150GB of stuff from the hard drive and no space has been freed up. I ran a scan with my trusty Daisydick which has never let me down and it showd what I thought to be a very much more accurate amout of free space now but the system says otherise as dones another scanner. Also I cant seem to figure out for the life of me what this extra 99GB of "other" space is. Below is a link to the screenshot I took. I really try to keep things very light and tidy on here.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Which One Is The *real* Hard Disk Space

Apr 28, 2012

New computer as graduation present from parents, I'm so excited yayayay, blah blah blah. 17-inch MacBook Pro, newest version, running 10.7.3. It's so shiny and everything. Etc Was checking on hard disk space to make sure I wasn't going crazy copying over all my music and etc. But the number given by a simple ⌘I on the HD was... suspiciously low.

I know ~/Music, ~/Pictures and ~/Desktop add up to about 120 GB alone, and it seemed implausible that /Applications, /Library and everything else would be so small in comparison. System Profiler confirmed this, suggesting total hard disk space used was closer to 200 GB: But this breakdown really doesn't help me much—file type is a lot less informative than where those files actually are. And I also found myself seriously doubting that there was nothing on my computer that wasn't audio, movies, photos, apps or backups.

[code]...

And got a third answer. One that seems to be the most accurate of the three, but I have to admit I'm easily swayed by computer things in monotype with lots of /s and ~s flying around So what is actually going on here and why doesn't my computer seem to know how much hard disk space it actually has free—if such a concept even exists anymore in the brave new lionworld?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Missing Disk Space And No Usb Startup

May 16, 2012

I have a white macBook (10.7.3, 250g HD) which has begun to behave in an odd way and which I have so far failed to resolve.

First I got a message saying very little disk space left - only 420MB which is strange because I knew the HD to be far from full. The beach ball gave me very little access to the Finder but I was eventually able to empty safari cache which gave me 6Gb.

Checking the root disk folder sizes showed that only 130gb was listed in the various folders but the status bar showed that only 6gb out of 250gb was available. I tried to start up from an external USB disk (no Firewire on this machine, sadly) but the laptop refused to starup from it - tried cable in both USB ports, disk is GUID formatted. I shut down the computer - had to force shutdown with power key as unresponsive to Finder command.

On restarting I got a message about forced shutdown etc but status bar now says 40gb available (when there should be over 100gb). I was able to select external USB drive in Startup preferences but machine will not startup ffrom external drive.

Disk Utility reports no problems with internal drive. I want to use Disk Warrior but cannot find cd, hence attempt to startup from external drive. Cannot even check disk while running DW from internal disk as it says prefs file corrupted or write protected. Trashing it (as suggested) makes no difference as new prefs file still unusable.

I have a TM backup but don't really want to use it if it is likely to have the same corruption. Also, why is the USB disk not starting up the Machine? Only thing I can think of is to do an archive/install of Lion, but is the bloating in the system or are ther some hidden files somewhere which won't be changed?

May 24, 2012

I went searching for lost disk space on my macbook air and by using OmniDiskSweeper found almost 13Gb in two directories that I had deleted a stack of emails from many months ago.

1. Why would the Apple mail app retain deleted emails

2. Is there any downside to using OmniDiskSweeper to remove them

3. How can I convince the mail app to not do that?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Deleting Files Does Not Free Up Space On Hard Disk

May 14, 2012

I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk. Then I empty the trash. But I don't get more free space on my hard disk! I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.) This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Shows Incorrect Free Space

Jun 11, 2012

The Finder window shows that I have 302GB of harddrive space remaining, out of 500GB. The Activity Monitor and Disk Utility show I have 240GB space remaining, and my System Profiler shows I have 239GB remaining. I just deleted a bunch of old TV shows off of iTunes (about 40GB worth) to open up some space, but only the Finder changed (up to 302GB from 260GB) but the Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, and System Profiler haven't changed.

Now, I'll assume the Finder is showing the correct amount of space, but I'm wondering why the other utilites are showing the incorrent amount of space. I have a feeling maybe something was screwed up when I created a 50GB Windows 7 partition through Boot Camp a couple months ago.

I've attempted to Repair Disk through the Disk Utility and it says everything looks fine. Any solutions to this minor inconvenience? Or at least an answer as to why this is happening?

OS X :: Memory Space Disappearing / Disk Space Reduces While Streaming Videos

Dec 2, 2009

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.

I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.

Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

Cheers

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used?  Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right?  So where's the missing ~100GB?  That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.
