OS X V10.7 Lion :: Creating Installer - Restore Failure / Cannot Allocate Memory

May 11, 2012

I have a MBP (Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) with 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB SDRAM. I am trying to to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion. I have attempted to create a USB installer with a Lexas 16 gb USB memory stick and I have gotten the following error towards the end of the restore:
"Restore Failure Could Not Restore- Cannot Allocate Memory".

What does this mean? Is there anything I can do other than attempt burning a disk (which I don't want to do cause of the lengthy process)? When I review the contents all the installer files are present. Upon rebooting, it appears the installer is working but I have not initiated installation out of fear that the installer is incomplete. Should I attempt installation?

Applications :: Cannot Erase Or Partition It - Disk Utility "Cannot Allocate Memory"

Mar 7, 2010

I have a 500G WD external HD, and I used Disk Utility to securely (35-pass) erase it. Now the I cannot do anything to the drive. Cannot erase or partition it. When I try disk utility says the task has "failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldnt be completed. Cannot allocate memory" Before the drive would show on the desktop as, WD 5000BEV External Media, when I plugged it in. Now it has a message saying that "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then it gives me three options which are... Initialize, Ignore, Eject. When I click Initialize I am redirected to Disk Utility. Also now in disk utility it says that it is a 2.2 TB WD Media opposed to WD 5000BEV External Media. How does it go from a 500g to a 2.2t It is unformatted and I do not know how to reformat it back to the it was.

OS X :: Trying To Mirror, "could Not Allocate Memory"

My Macbook Pro's hard drive has started making a lot of noise recently so I'm attempting to replace it. However, when I boot from the Snow Leopard CD and try to use Disk Utility to 'restore' my Macbook's HD to the new HD (in an external dock), it seems to get started copying, then says "could not allocate memory". What's going on here?

MacBook Pro :: 2.4 GHz CPU Failure - Inactive Memory

Jul 7, 2010

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with 2GB of RAM. I can't say it's ever been magnificently fast, but I always blamed it on the memory. I've always intended on upgrading it, just never got around to it. I've also been away for 6 months, so haven't been using my computer.
But today I've been trying to use Photoshop & it's hideously slow! Even the simplest task such as a desaturate command can take as long as 2 minutes! Admittedly on a large size document.

I have iStat in the menu bar. When performing these tasks I would assume it would display some sort of indication it's processing in the CPU. But it displays Photoshop only using at much as 16% CPU & the memory having 500MB of inactive memory? My brother had been using my computer away & was constantly complaining of the speed of it. He suspects it could be a CPU issue. Am I correct in thinking Photoshop should be using more CPU when processing a task?

OS X :: Time Machine Restore Failure

Oct 10, 2009

Following my internal startup disk failure (System v. 10.5.8) on a G5 (mid-2004) I am trying to restore it from the Time Machine backup folder Backups.backupdb located on an external 1TB WD called Time Machine Backups also containing additional folders with other backups.

The internal startup now has only Sys. v.10.5. installed from Apples disk.

Using Leopards start-up disk to Restore System from Backup it finds the 1TB WD disk called Time Machine Backups. After clicking on continue the next window reads No Mac OSX System Backup Found.

The backup folder called Backups.backupdb begins on 5-13-09 with 7 day backup intervals to 7-30-09. The month of August only contains 4 backups. The month of September shows daily backups.

Applications :: Aperture Import Failure - Not Seeing All Photos On Memory Card

Apr 5, 2010

Recently Aperture has a problem reading all the photos on my 4GB Sandisk memory cards (2 cards, same problem).

When importing pictures from Aperture (RAW) - it only reads about 10 pictures, displays the thumbnail and then stops reading from the card (when there is still hundreds more pictures to be imported).

What I have to do is import with iPhoto and then drag them into Aperture. This is a pain though. I happens on both my memory cards and is a recent thing. It used to work.

iPhoto reads the memory cards in the camera very quickly, but Aperture consistently fails on more than one memory card which leads me to exclude the cards as the point of failure.

MacBook Air :: Creating A Restore Partition For OS X

Aug 27, 2009

For those not in the know, a restore partition is essentially a partition (sometimes hidden) that contains an OS installer. It's quite common on Windows Machines. I'd love to be able to have a bootable OS X Installer on my MacBook Air's SSD Just so I have the flexibility of reinstalling, or booting from the 'install disk' wherever i please, regardless of whether I have the MBA Superdrive with me.

I would think that the solution is basically making an image of the OS X 10.6 installer. Partitioning the MBA SSD, restoring the OS X 10.6 installer onto the smaller 'Restore Partition'. Potentially even calling the smaller partition ".Mac OS X Restore", as the period at the beginning of the volume name will stop it from appearing on the finder desktop.

OS X Mavericks :: Disk Utility - Restore Failure / Not Enough Space

Sep 3, 2014

I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

Or is there another way to create the restore disc if you don't have access to another Mac to run disc utility?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Installer Can't Find HD

Sep 4, 2014

I have a MBP 13" early 2013 / Mountain Lion 10.8.2...A while ago I got a spinning wheel right after starting my mac. I contacted Apple since my mac was still under warranty, and after further diagnosis, they told me that I have to replace the HD, so they mail me a new HD.

I connected the new HD on a USB cable to format and re-partition it using Disk utility (At this point, DU was able to see the HD on a USB connection). After partitioning, I removed my Mac cover to replace my HDs. I booted using a Mountain Lion USB drive, but the installer couldn't find the new HD, just the recovery partition. I bought a new HD from Amazon, same result, my mac can start with teh old HD. Also, the disk utility can read the new HDs if they are on a usb connection, but it cant read them if they are on a SMART connection !

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Installer Won't Accept My Admin Password

Mar 11, 2012

For the past month or so, any time I've tried to go through the process of installing an app that requires Installer to do the work, when it comes time to enter my admin password, nothing happens. The password box pops up, I enter the correct password (as when I enter an incorrect one it does its "incorrect password shake-thing") and, like always, the admin password box disappears. Normally at this point, the installer continues on to install the app, but instead it does absolutely nothing. I can click "Install" again to enter the password, but, again, nothing happens. I've tried changing my password, deleting preference files, doing a disk repair and permissions repair - nothing.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Make Boot Disc Without Installer?

Mar 15, 2012

I'm trying to make an OS X Lion boot disc. A failed Windows 8 Bootcamp install killed my Mac, but luckily I had a Time Machine backup which was accessible via the Recovery Disk. However, I would still like to have a boot disc handy in case something like this happens again and the Recovery Disk is somehow corrupted.

I Googled(among other things) how to make one, and the instructions seem fairly simple. Only, I can't find a Mac OS X Lion Installer anywhere. When I bought my refurbished iMac from Apple, OS X Lion was already on it. Since I didn't download it from the App Store it seems I don't have the Lion Installer to make a boot disc... Anything I can do (besides wasting $30 to redownload Lion from the App Store for the file) ?
