I cannot enter Time Machine (to restore a file that was lost) by clicking on the Time Machine icon. The machine backs up all right, but I just don't seem to have access.

Why is time machine saying that it cannot restore a file due to access persmissions when all I'm trying to do is restore a single file for my one and only user on the same computer that created the backup? Shouldn't that just work?

How to restore a file from the Time Share volume of one mac to a different mac.Â
I have 2 machines: macbook pro & mac air both both running latest mountian lion. Each keeps its own time share volume on a network server. The two have some sync'd shares, but in general, they are not fully sync'd.Â
the macbook pro is in the shop for repair for a few days and I'd like to fetch some of it's files from its time machine backup onto the macair. I'm a little reluctant to simply fire up Time Machine on the mac air and respecify it's storage volume to be the macbook pro's volume. I'm concerned about internal configuration changes Time Machine might make to the mac air, including making changes that might cause it to have to do a full (not differential) back up when I reconfigure the mac air's Time Machine to use it's own backup volume after I'm done getting files from the macbook pro backup volume.Â
In addition to simply getting access to some of the files of the mac in the shop, I want to get the mac calendar from that machine and use it on the mac air. I understand that this may be somewhat trickier.

I have been having a problem editing pictures (screen goes white when I click 'edit') so i went to a discussion about it. I followed directions for fixing the problem including renaming my iphoto folder and now I can't find my old pictures. I changed the name back and still no photos. I tried to go to file vault and restore the pictures but I get a message saying that file vault can't be found. I know a little about fixing problems but some of the information about this issue is over my head. I've had this mac for 2 years and until now have been able to trouble shoot all my problems.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a file I alter once about a week, each time I alter it I save it as a new one, with a date included in the name.So I have a series of files something like
xxxxx march 13.numbers
xxxxx march 07.numbers
xxxxx march 01.numbers
etc.
This morning when I updated and saved the march13 file I accidentally saved it as xxxxxx march 13, not xxxxxx march 20 which it should have been. No problem, go into time machine and retrieve the march 13 file I thought.Its not there. Its not there from just before the save to any time it should be there !
Luckily I was able to retrieve it as I also have a once a week online backup so I went into the last one of those and retrieved "xxxxxx march13" which proves it did exist, it has a creation date of march 17 but if I look at TM for march 18 its not there - why isn't it in my time machine backup?
All the other files in that folder are as expected so the only thing that makes any sense to me is that TM hasn't been backing up over the past week or so but TM error logger shows no errors.
I can find the file I want within Time Machine - I hit the restore button and Time Machine goes back to the desktop but tht file is no-where to be seen. I've tried individual files and folders to no avail?

I accidentally deleted an important Numbers file on my iPhone from iCloud, and desperately need it back. I've tried using my Time Machine to reclaim it but as soon as i select Cloud Drive, Numbers folder, or user/Library/Mobile Documents i can't go back to any previous backups, my timeline tabs all show up in red. I tried following the Pondini instructions for restoring individual files but I must be doing something wrong. To restore the address book, he says "open finder window". No problem. Then "enter time machine then navigate to the backup in question". When I open time machine, it only wants to back up. I can't access any files from there. I can only access the files from the backup folder but then there is no "restore" button. How do I restore the address book that I backed up in time machine?

Spotlight can't locate this file, I've ran disk utility to verify and repair the internal drive, verified the external, no problems on both counts. I even tried allowing read & write privileges temporarily to everyone on both drives, but no luck.
I momentarily pointed Time Machine to make back ups at the wrong partition on the external HDD attached to my Time Capsule, now I have pointed back to the correct partition, but it won't recognise the old back-ups. ie it says "Oldest Backup - None, Latest Backup - None". How can I pick up the old back ups?

Now I have done that once with (snow)Leopard using the DVD to boot from and then select the proper Time Machine copy.But now I have Lion, and that's a download. My Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage. I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD) kept rebooting. Â
So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot. How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD? When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still). Â

After reading several postings (especially url...) I thought to understand how to restore my Calendars from Time Machine after creating a big mess using iCloud..So far so good:
1. Open Finder and select Go > Library - using the Alt key- (so the folder "Calendars" is shown)
2. Enter Time Machine

So I try to find my way to, you might guess, Home > Library... can't be seen. It's hidden. And now the Go > (press Alt = ) Library is grayed out.So, how to make this work?

long time Mac user (original 128 Mac!). Somehow, not sure what I did, the sent folder in my POP email got checked to delete after one day. My sent folder has emails dating back to 2004. So, when I got up this morning, I opened mail, looked for a previously sent email and realized that only the ones sent yesterday existed. I need to restore. Fortunately, I have a time machine backup. However, when I go to Time Machine, find the correct SENT folder and try to restore, it tells me I do not have access to the file. I am not panicking ..yet.Â

I inadvertently deleted some messages from a RSS feed in Mail.It seems that they are located in /users/* username*/library/mail/v2/RSS.I entered Time Machine and navigated the this directory in a backup and selected 'Restore'.It seemed to work but when I went back into Mail, nothing had changed. One of my co-workers is upgrading his old Mac Pro to a new iMac with a 256GB SSD and an internal 2TB ATA drive. He has a Time Machine backup to run the restore from, but his account is larger than the 256GB SSD. Ultimately he wants to keep his stuff on the 2TB drive and run the OS and his account on the SSD, but I couldn't think of a way to split that during the restore.

I had an issue with my HD on my Macbook Air. The genius bar wiped my HD clean and re-installed LION. When I got home, I tried to restore the MB Air from my most recent backup. I keep getting the error "The backup cannot be opened."If this is a password protected backup, you may have entered an incorrect password or the backup may be damaged".Â
I know that I must have entered the right PW since it let me in to the Backup drive. I am using a brand new macmini server with the G-technology 8TB G-Speed raid solution as my backup system. So right now I have a MacBook air that has NONE of my stuff on it and it won't let me restore it either

To cure some problems I reinstalled the iMac install DVD, erasing the hard drive, then installed 10.8.5 and it's working. I then entered to the time machine to the date when I still was using 10.8.5 not the dreaded 10.9.4. But the restore button won't come on and respond. I did all this to get out of 10.9.4. Why won't the time machine restore?

After review on the forum here. Did try to verify & fixed the disc, re-setup a TM link wirelessly & wired. Delete com.apple.TimeMachine.plist THEN try again to backup. Still back to square one. Â
Looks like I am out of options before I have "format" the disc like a window user. BTW, I have the FileVault on & not able to turn off since not enough space left. And the worst part is I cannot move mush to spare space of extra 23G....So I have not tried if the FileVault would be the issue of all this under Lion or not..

I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.

So by accident I deleted all my address contacts on my mac by accedeint. (I was trying to stop my Mac user account picture from changing all the time). I knew I had deleted them but didnt think anything of it. I came to text someone today and half my contacts have gone from my iPhone and my iPad . But i dont know how to get them back on to my address book via time machine. Â
