OS X V10.7 Lion :: Auto-Logout Does Not Return To Login Window

Jun 6, 2012

I have a new install of Mac 10.7.4 on a 21" iMac. I have the iMac set to automatically log out after 14 minutes of idle time. On many occasions when the logout is triggerd, the user account will log out, but the screen does not display the login window, it still shows an image of the last state of when the computer was logged in. When I move the mouse, the screen acts as if it's erasing the pixels off the screen, showing bits and pieces of the login screen in the background. If I type a user ID and password, a small area clears around the login fields so I can see the fields and log in.

This was originally happening when a screen saver was enabled, I have since removed the screen saver. This did not make a difference.

I have the Preference Pane>Security>Advanced set to log  out at 14 minutes and the Preference Pane>Energy Saver>Display Sleep set to go black at 15 minutes.

I have tried various different times/settings, but have not been able to fix this.

Since this configuration is for a Lab setting, I really need for the computer to log out cleanly and go back to the login screen.

OS X :: Auto-shutdown At Login Window?

Oct 31, 2010

My parents share a Mac Mini. Often when I'm at their house, I notice that it's been left at the login screen. Presumably one person logged out thinking they were leaving the computer available for the other and then never put it to sleep at the login screen. The issue is that Energy Saver prefs don't seem to apply when there is no user logged in. The computer just sits there with the login window display indefinitely. It never goes to sleep or turns the display off.

Is there any way to have some sort of daemon run only while no one is logged in that would either shut down the computer or put it to sleep after a specified number of minutes of being idle at the login screen? While the Mac Mini is a very energy efficient computer, it still makes no sense for it to be on for dozens of hours each week unnecessarily.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: No Login Window In 10.7.3?

Mar 29, 2012

I have a Mac Mini running 10.7.3 that I made the mistake of unchecking the show input menu in login window. Now I can't log in at all. I have tried to delete the "com.apple.loginitems.plist" using screen sharing, Lion in all its wisdom tells me I don't have permission.

I then tried to create a start up disk on one of my 2TB disks, somehow the system wasn't installed, just all the included apps. I then tried reinstalling lion on the Mac Mini, after over an hour it restarted with the same blank screen. Now when I go to the App Store Lion is no longer available to me.

OS X :: Unable To Auto-login To Guest Account / Safari Wants To Use Keychain Login

Jan 6, 2009

I work for a company that has several Macs available for customers' use. These are basically demo-machines that they can play with, and at the end of each day, the machines are wiped and rebooted.

The way we do this is simple: the machines auto-login to the Guest account, which will wipe the account at the end of the day. Well, getting a few new Macs in this week, I simply copied over the entire Guest user account to the new machines to avoid reloading all the demo content, preferences, etc. And truthfully, the machines have been working great.

Except one thing. The computer keeps giving me that annoying message that says "Safari (or Finder, or System Preferences, or anything!) wants to use keychain 'login'". And asks for the login keychain password. Well here's the thing: the Guest accounts don't have passwords!

So I looked up a little bit on this topic, and did things like... Went to "Keychain List" in the Edit menu of Keychain Access, and deleted both the "login" and "system" keychains. No help. I went to Preferences in Keychain Access and said "Reset My Keychain". When doing this, however, it asks for the new password for the login keychain.

The problem with this is that I cannot leave the field blank! The Guest account doesn't have a password, so how am I supposed to not create a password?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unwanted Nightly Log-offs And Then Different Login Window?

Jun 24, 2012

My imac on Lion 10.7.4 has for several nights logged off by itself.  Nothing is set in System Preferences to make it do this, and I have checked all settings to make sure of this:  Security and Privacy/Advanced: "Log out after x minutes of inactivity" is unticked.Energy Saver: computer/display sleep are at 10 minutes, put the computer to sleep where possible is unticked.

When I return to it in the morning, the login screen is not "normal". On a few occasions, there has been a photo-screensaver image, and weirdly, only when I "paint away" pixels of this image with the mouse is the log-in window slowly revealed behind.  On other occasions, the log-in window has been immediately visible, but the screen has been half-black/half login-window, but not uniformly so.

This is annoying because, although all my apps and documents are restored, this takes several minutes  (my imac has also been running slower and slower recently), e.g. some apps take a couple of minutes to re-appear. Some processes that were running may need to be restarted from scratch.

Nothing has been altered in the System recently, apart from maybe standard updates as recommended by Software Update (did not take much notice). The last thing I was doing before this first occurred was running TestDisk on Terminal on this imac to try to analyse (only) an External Hard Drive (not previously associated with this imac). On two occasions, the TestDisk run (which I left to run overnight) did not finish because of the log-outs. However, TestDisk was not doing or checking anything related to this imac (apart from actually running on it, in Terminal).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: User Accounts Selection Not Visible In Login Window If Resolution Low

May 14, 2012

I just installed Lion 10.4.7 upgrade on my iMac (only 6 months old). I have 5 user accounts on this iMac (A, B, C, D and Guest). With prior version of Lion, these would all be displayed in the login window for selection. Now, with 10.4.7, depending upon the resolution in effect by a user when he logs out, if it is a lower resolution (i.e., 1024X768) the login window will not contain the rightmost user selections, D and Guest in this example. If the user had a higher resolution (i.e., 1920X1080) all 5 users account selections will be visible. An individual user's desired resolution should not be effecting the login window, should it?

OS X :: Finding An App For Auto Login With Password?

Mar 15, 2009

I just have a little question about starting my MacBook Pro, nothing too important, just trying to further streamline my OS X experience.

Currently, I am using the Schedule... feature in the Energy Saver portion of Sys Prefs (which is, oddly enough, represented by a energy hogging incandescent) to start my MBP each weekday, then sleep it three minutes later in case I decide not to use it. This is useful in that it cuts 30 seconds out of the startup/login process, but it only takes the process halfway (it doesn't log in). I could enable auto login to complete the process, but then my password would be rendered ineffective, and others who occasionally use my laptop would have instantaneous access to my account and files. Is there any way I can auto login then promptly lock the computer and head back to the login screen? Is there a scheduling application I could use to do the same?

Also, is there a way to get the icons to auto-arrange themselves like I can setup in Windows?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Failed To Logout Error Message On Reaccess After Manual Sleep?

Apr 17, 2012

Often I just put my Macbook Pro with Lion OS to sleep manually, instead of shutting down. Since the upgrade to OS Lion, when I return to the computer I often am greeted with a message that I could not be logged out because Firefox failed to quit. Is sleep a logout? I don't intend to logout...though I do require a password to regain access after the computer enters the sleep state. This is a consistent issue with Lion, which never occurred with the earlier OS.

OS X :: Switching To LOGIN Window Upon Sleep...

I would love it if my mac could switch to the login window upon sleep (or wakeup)... given the usage patterns of my laptop in my household, where someone uses the laptop, closes it, and someone else picks it up to use it, it would be the most streamlined way of switching between accounts...

The closest solution, which isn't quite right, is to require password for the last user account to be used... not exactly the best solution...
