Safari :: Change Default Spelling Dictionary?

Jun 9, 2012

How does one change the default spelling dictionary for Safari on Windows? For the Mac, it changes in response to the default locale, but on Windows, it just sets to American English and you cannot change it anywhere I can see. All my locale information in Windows is set to UK English. In fact on some websites, like this one, the spelling checker seems to be disabled! I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, BTW, running Safari 5.1.7?

Applications :: InDesign - Adding Words To Dictionary/custom Dictionary?

Jan 10, 2010

Is there a way to 'bulk' add new words to the InDesign dictionary? I do a lot of menus and a lot of the food terms come up as spelling mistakes.

I was wondering if there was a quicker way to customize the dictionary than telling the spell check to learn the words as I go. EG add one huge text file to the dictionary with all the words or something.

Mac Pro :: Slow Beach Ball - Take Ten Second For Dictionary To Come Up After Clicking On Look Up Dictionary

Dec 24, 2009

I still get beach balls when doing the basic of things. For example, it sometimes takes 10 seconds for the dictionary to come up after right clicking a word and selecting "look up dictionary". Then again, sometimes it is instant. Similar things happen when looking at a document that is a .pdf, for example, and I want to save as a jpeg. Whether I go to "save as" or through the "print" and then selecting "save as a pdf", it can beach ball for 8-10 seconds.

I thought it may have been a ram problem and from another thread I discovered the "activity monitor" and have that running constantly in the dock showing me "System Memory" and for the stuff I'm doing, it hardly ever gets close to half the pie chart.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Switching Between Multiple Input Languages?

Apr 7, 2012

I use English, Korean and Google Japanese. I used to use Windows with the same set of languages and it was even more difficult than in OS X, because each IME may have multiple languages (for example, Korean IME has both Korean and English mode). Now in OS X it is better than Windows because each IME has only single language, but still there are some troubles.

I use long command + shift. It shows the list in the middle of the screen, but the order is change depending on the current IME. And it only has text, no flag icon, so it is difficult to get the IME I want without carefully watching the screen.

It looks like OS X does not support assinging a shortcut for each langauge. For example, if I could assign F1 for English, F2 for Korean and F3 for Japanese it would be much easier. Or if only the popup language screen had flag icons...

Is there any third-party app that helps switching between multiple IMEs?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Resize Dictionary Widget

Jun 27, 2012

Using a MacBook Pro with Retina display, I am unable to resize the Dictionary widget. On my previous MacBook Pro (2008, running OSX 10.6.8), you could grab the lower right corner of the Dictionary panel and drag it to expand the window.

With Lion, grabbing doesn't do anything, so I'm stuck with a tiny Dictionary window that requires scrolling to see more than a few lines.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changing Font Of Popup Dictionary (Look Up)?

Feb 14, 2012

I mean this: [URL]. One of the greatest features of Lion I like is the pop-up dictionary. Since I am not a native English speaker, I use this feature a lot, and it is very convenient. But the only thing that bugs me is that I cannot find any way to customise it. The black text on the translucent gray background makes it difficult to read depending on the background of the application. I want to change the background colour and the opacity. The text is too small. It does not change with the text size of the application. I want to enlarge the text size. Is there any way to achieve this or is this another example of Apple's infamous use-it-as-it-is-or-get-lost feature?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Add Vocabulary To Spell Check Dictionary?

Feb 27, 2012

I need to add knitting, crochet, and yarn/fiber vocabularly terms so spell check will stop "correcting" terms that are in point of fact spelled correctly. Where/how does one do this? I've been told to look for the LocalDictionary in Library in my account folder... but I don't *see* any Library folder, never mind a Spell or LocalDictionary folder anywhere.

I'm using OS X 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Remove Custom Word From Dictionary

Jun 15, 2012

I have somehow added the word "indadvertedly" to my dictionary. This is not a word in any known language. I have tried opening in TextEdit, Mail, and Word. I have tried right-clicking and choosing "Unlearn." Unlearn is not an option. I have tried opening Library-Spelling and editing the contained file (dynamic-text.dat) but this is not the spelling dictionary file and only contains a jumble of almost random letters. It is the only file in that folder. How to remove a custom word from the dictionary? I feel like it really shouldn't be this hard.

I am running OS 10.7.3, Word for Mac 2011, TextEdit 1.7.

Software :: Different Languages For Different Applications?

Dec 5, 2008

I just bought a MacBook a few months ago, and I am having trouble with languages. On my old PC, if you are switching between languages, such as Japanese and English, it remembers which languages you are using in which applications, and keeps them separate. Thus if I am simultaneously using an online dictionary (typing in Japanese), and typing a research paper in MSWord (in English), it keeps these separate and I can do both at the same time. However, on my Mac, it seems to change the language for *all* applications at once, so I have to constantly switch back and forth. Also, Word seems to change the font every time automatically to a Japanese font, so actually every time I switch between Firefox and Word I have to do things 3 times (switch languages, switch back, then switch the font back).

Since Mac OS X Tiger, you can listen to your computer with VoiceOver's help.Basically, you define trigger key strokes in the Preferences Pane and the system generate an utterance of the text you've selected in your document. For the rest of us, because of the localisation, Mac OS X does not come up with the same polish.Similarly, the Dictionary.app displays a fine New Oxford American Dictionary. Even when you purchased your mac in a non-English speaking European country, like France.
