Feb 22, 2012

I accidentally moved "My Pictures" folder from the My Favorites sidebar in Finder, and I can no longer find the folder. I've searched "all my files" for a My Pictures folder and nothing has come up, not even in the trash (that I haven't yet emptied). I am wondering if there is anyway of getting this folder back, as I had several pictures and folders organized within that My Pictures folder. All of my pictures are somewhere still on my computer but even they are hard to locate now without them being in any folder. Would be difficult to have to re-organize every single thing that was in that folder.

I am a reasonably experienced iMac user but can anybody tell me please why the (grey) sidebar in Finder has gone missing and tell me how to get it back? I have never seen this happen before.
I am running Snow Leopard on an iMac (intel). Obvious things like preferences/Sidebar checked (all items in there ticked including Devices, Shared, Places, etc).

I just got my computer reformatted, and lost all icon customization. I went to change them and did all successfully (most in Candybar), but the Finder has been a problem. I initially forgot how to do it, so some research said I could do it if I simply replaced the file in the System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources (Finder.png) path with my own of the same name. I did, but it didn't take - still blue. So then I did it through Candybar and it just disappeared from the dock. I've tried reverting the Finder.png file and nothing, as well as restoring the original icon through Candybar.
I saw one answer about booting a clone, so I researched how to do that, and can't do it on my internal for some reason. I tried an external, but it said it'd have to wipe all files first, which I won't.I should add that an archive and install isn't an option - I JUST got this fixed by Apple yesterday since I had lost my install disks, so I certainly can't do it myself.

My user fonts suddenly don't show up in font book. I've tried all the standard fixes.- restarted in SAFE mode. - cleared the font cache- verified the disc- repaired permissions- reinstalled both font book and the user font folder from an older version in Time Machine- Verified all the fonts.
I haven't tried tossing them in another user account yet because I find the idea of having to reset up the entire user account alarming. Is there anything else I can try? These fonts all worked just days ago. Â
If I click on the fonts in the user folder they come up 'installed' and reappear. But as soon as I close and reopen fontbook they disappear again. Here's the general console readout (the short version, there is a lot more of the same.)   5/8/12 9:58:58 PM-Mac-JuniorFont Book[591]Warning##### ERROR: Could not get CTFontRef for file:///Users/terri2/Library/Fonts/Edward.ttf#postscript-name=Besafe; resyncing Font Book and XType 5/8/12 9:58:58 PM-Mac-JuniorFont Book[591]Warning##### ERROR: file:///Users/terri2/Library/Fonts/Edward.ttf#postscript-name=Besafe has no family name 5/8/12 9:58:58 PM-Mac-JuniorFont Book[591]Warning##### ERROR: Could not get CTFontRef for file:///Users/terri2/Library/Fonts/Jagged%20dreams.ttf#postscript-name=JaggedDr eams; resyncing Font Book and XType

I started cleaning out my MC. So today I found the "All Images" smart folder. I opened it and selected all 9000 contents and deleted, I got worried and stopped the process. I think 3000 images deleted. Then I turned off computer. Are these files necessary? Can I restore them?

Because of problems accessing our network using Snow Leopard, I've started using the 'Favorites' folder as a 'shortcut' to our networked drives. It works fine and is very useful. A colleague has asked me to set the same facility up on his computer. When I dragged 'Favorites' from his 'Libary' folder to the sidebar, it appeared there with a heart icon. 'Sweet!' we thought. However, we then found that when we dragged one of the folders which he wanted to have in his favorites over to the sidebar, the O.S. proceeded to make a copy of the whole folder contents - instead of it working as a shortcut. What are we doing wrong?

In FINDER favorites can I reassign/edit the destination (properties) so that when I click e.g. on the "Pictures" link it takes me to my Pic folder on my external HDD instead of the default HDD in the iMac. I have twelve TB of data sitting on 2 Drobo devices and I do not intend to keep any data on the Internal 1TB HDD besides the programs. I know I can remove the current fav from the list and add a link myself but then I get an ordinary folder icon instead of the sexy camera icon. how can I change the icon on the folder.Â

I added some folders in finder sidebar a while back, and suddenly, they disappeared, such as the documents shortcut. When I try to put them back, finder removes it again. Also if I go to Finder - Preferences and try to check the documents shortcut to appear in sidebar again, the checkbox doesn't work. I'm pretty sure this happened after I synchronized my iPhone for the first time. How can I add favorites to the finder sidebar again?

In the Finder window you can create Favorites - folders you want easy access to. Now I'm ready to delete a few of these "Favorites". The Finder doesn't seem to want me to. It seems to want to trash the actual folders that these finder favorite aliases are pointing to. How do I delete a Finder Favorite?

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I just setup a Seagate external drive to become my offsite backup. I am a new iMac user. I dragged and dropped my most important folders (using Finder) onto the Seagate drive (to copy them over) but probably I did something incorrectly because the Document folder which has all my important files disappeared from under Favorites in Finder and did not show up on the Seagate. I can no longer access what I need as there is no easy way to locate my files which were grouped in a multi level, nicely organized file structure under Documents, to make it easy for me to locate my work. Â
Now, Finder shows under Favorites: All My Files, Airdrop, Applications, Desktop, Downloads, Logins. Previously it also had an entry for Documents, now missing. Using All My Files I can locate the files I worked on yesterday, so they are still on the hard drive.Â

I've been having a few problems with Leopard. The first problem is that I can no longer eject external drives or disk images. (I've tried relaunch finder dumping finder.plists and sidebarlists.plists, resetting PRAM, dumping various plists reinstalling the combo update etc. and nothing works).
Secondly I don't see disks on my desktop when I insert them and I have CD's and DVD's set to open finder for blank disks. I have no preferences option under finder. When I click the Finder tab there is no preferences listed there. It just has: About Finder, Secure Empty Trash faded out, Services, Hide Finder, Hide Others, Show All (faded out).
I realize I'm also missing the Empty Trash along with the Preferences. How do I get this back?
I got it solved thanks to DeltaMac. I just opened Onyx and went to OnyX/Parameters/Finder put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item and also Show Empty Trash item and logged out and back in again and both things show up now.If only I could solve the problem of not being able to eject disk images or external disks from the desktop.

Over the last few days I've noticed a problem with missing icons. It seems to mainly effect icons in the Trash but I have one or two missing icons for videos and apps within the Finder and on the Desktop. The icon is completely gone - I have to click on the filename to select it. Quicklook works OK (for video).
I can't think of anything I've installed that would have done it except Onyx, but I haven't run that in weeks. I did repair permissions a few days ago but I doubt that could break this. It persists after a reboot. I can't get it to happen on command, it just randomly occurs. Creating a New Folder always works OK.

I would like to create an archive of important application installers and I will sync the contents between two systems MacPro and Macbook Pro.Â
I need to pull the names of the application/developers from somewhere so I figured I would use the Application Support directory.Â
So I need a way to copy this directories folder structure without any of the file contents. Is there an easy way to do this. I found a post with an Automator script but the link is dead [URL]
I also found this post that refers to doing it in terminal but since it is the app support directory I am wary to do this as I am not familiar with terminal at all and I am not clear on what exactly to write in the old_dir / new_dir section. I figure it would be something like this /Library/Application Support but I dont want to make a mistake.Â
Here is the Terminal command:
cd old_dir
find . -type d -depth -print | cpio -pd new_dir Â

I did a quick search of the forums and didn't see anything - but after installing Snow Leopard there are some gaps in my Applications folder, however I don't have one of the "Incompatible Applications" folders on my hard drive so I'm curious as to which applications have gone missing, and why?

I have run into after installing Snow Leopard on my machine. It is really the first complaint I have since I put the OS in on the 28th and I am just having time to sit down and toy around with it and I discovered this issue.
When I was playing around in a few Adobe applications, specifically Flash, it warned me when opening a project that I was missing a few fonts form the project and that they would be substituted.
Going into my font Library I looked for the fonts that it said were missing and confirmed that they STILL EXISTED in the folder. After double checking, I realized that a lot of my fonts were missing from the application.
After opening Word 2008, I noticed that a lot of my fonts missing from Word as well. I shut down Word and tried rebuilding the Font Cache by dragging the Word font cache file out to the desktop but Word did not rebuild it's font menu with the missing fonts.
Here's where it gets interesting. When opening an Apple application like Mail, all of my fonts that are present in the font folder show up. This is INCLUDING all of the fonts that are missing in Adobe and Word. Opening a program like Adium also shows that all of the fonts are there.
