OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Very Slow Email Connection On One Mail-server Only?
Mar 7, 2012I have suddenly, since Friday 2 March, experienced very slow connection to one of my ISP's mailservers. Emails without attachments work ok'ish (a little "hesitantly"), emails with attachments of moderate sizes (eg. +/- 500 KB) download/upload extremely slowly and most of the time fail. I have asked my ISP, who are generally helpful, and they have tested the mailserver and can find nothing wrong. So, here we go: The problem is both for ethernet and wireless.The problem is for one account only. I have a different account with the same ISP, but on a different mailserver, which works absolutely fine.Two different Macs have the same problem. The other PCs with different ISP's accounts work fine.Router is working fine with good internet connection and email via one of the two accounts works fine.It is not a problem on my computer (since it is the same issue for two machines). Both run OSX 10.6.8I have tried both Entourage and Outlook on both machines; same problem everywhere - one account works, the other doesn't (properly).I have tried with my iPhone, using the same wireless connection and same account details, and it downloads emails with attachments speedily - emails that failed to download on the MBP/Outlook.I have tried one of the machines (a MacBook Pro) at home with a different wireless connection but to the same mailserver and it works fine there!This happened last Friday and no settings have been changed locally for months. My conclusion is (but may be wrong): The router is fineThe macs are fineThe email clients are fineGeneral connection to internet and mail is fineThe mailserver is probably fine But a connection between one mailserver account and the two macs has suddenly gone wrong. It is almost as if there is a setting on either the mailserver saying "I don't like that connection to that place, I will slow it down." or somewhere in this place saying "I don't like that account on that mailserver, I will slow it down." The question then is:Which network setting is so specific that it can be this selective?

May 18, 2012I am getting a recurring probleme with my Mail app: "The IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” rejected the password for user “myaddress@gmail.com”. I cannot send or receive email through Mail.
What seems odd to me is that I can sign into the web version of gmail and see current email, but email received or sent is no longer happy in Mail. I have been using my gmail, set up as an IMAP account in Mail for months now.
Needless to say I've checked, rechecked, and made sure my password and username are both correct.

Sep 6, 2009Apple's new OSX Snow Leopard includes native Exchange email sync using Exchange Web Services but it seems that this does not sync emails in the same way outlook does: emails on Mail.app only update when you open a specific folder on your exchange mailbox (like IMAP does) and not like Outlook on windows where folders are updated in the background. does anyone know about this behavior and if it can be changed on Mail to work in the background? I've only tried this on a developer beta (latest version) of SL briefly and noticed this behavior but would like to get feedback from those that may have upgraded.

Sep 15, 2009I was thrilled to see Exchange support in Mail/Snow Leopard, but I am less than thrilled with the experience! I should note that my first tests were to set this up as an Exchange 2007 account; I have not yet attempted to use the Exchange IMAP type account, but shall try that later.
Setting it up was quite easy, and I was able to start retrieving emails immediately. Sending is another matter.
1. The sent emails do not show up in my Sent folder for that account, nor on any smart folders that I defined.
2. Multiple instances of the message are stored in the Drafts folder for some reason. There is always more than one message, and often more than two (once there were six copies of the message in the drafts!).

May 8, 2012I am trying to access my exchange server for work. The autodiscover sets the exchange server to the wrong site (whether this is a Mail issue or a server issue, I'm not sure...); I am trying to disable autodiscover so that I can manually set the exchange server in a permanent way. Is this possible? When I contacted IT at work, this was their response: "Mac users are pointed to a different server address due to incompatibilities with the Mac applications that handle mail (Entourage, Macmail). The issue is that an auto-discover feature within the application causes the software to connect to the incorrect address automatically, therefore you must change it each time. Unfortunately Macmail and Entourage cannot disable this function and we recommend using Outlook 2011 for Mac. There is a script file available to disable autodiscovery in Outlook 2011 and it will retain the proper mail server settings."

My iPhone gets mail pushed the second it is received, but it may take my Mail app on Snow Leopard several minutes to receive pushed mail unless I manually hit Get Mail. Jun 1, 2012A couple weeks back, we switched from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010.The only change required on the OSX mail client was to change the server address.I have two macbook pros, one is a 2GB early vintage intel, and the other a more recent 4GB model.Both of them are configured for access to the exchange server.Both are running 10.6.Once the change was made, both clients started using huge amounts of memory.This isn't a leak, as is reported in some Lion threads, because it eventually comes back down again.When you start the client, it might use about 150MB of RAM.After a while I have seen as much as 1.6GB of RAM usage on the 4GB machine.If you take the exchange account out of the mix (disable it in preferences) the client consistently stays at about 75MB of RAM.The peak isn't limited by the client as far as I can tell -- it basically uses up all free memory and drives the system completly nuts.Many of the applications no longer perform well once they are subjected to memory starvation, and this includes the mail client itself.
I am now running the activity window with Mail to see if I can spot a pattern, but in one case I watched Mail's memory usage grow in Activity Monitor with nothing in the Activity screen.I aso tried creating a new account instance on the 4GB machine, but without any cached data the behavior was far worse.It very quickly consumes the entire machine and doesn't seem to return to normal.I am firmly convinced this is a side effect of changing the exchange service or one of the exchange settings, if for no other reason than the behavior is new on two systems.It's still unforgivable for the Mail client to do this -- if it can consume all available memory then it needs to monitor itself and defer or break up what it is trying to do.I am a great fan of this mail client but this is so unusable that it might force me back to outlook running in a VM.

Sep 23, 2009Since updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 Mail.app has been unable to retieve IMAP mail from my OS X Leopard 10.5.x server running the standard cyrusd. Does anybody have any clues? Mail just sits there syncing the mailbox forever, it never stops. If I turn on logging to file, it just continuously FETCHes from IMAP and never ends. It's driving me mad. My iphone can get the IMAP mail from the same server absolutely fine. I added the mail account to a new OS X Snow Leopard user account, and that also failed to get anywhere. So its not corrupted data on my MBP. It doesn't appear to be corrupted data on the OS X server either, as the iPhone works.

It seems that re-entering the password in the account settings window makes it work for a while, until the next operation starts, then it times out again. Anyone having these problems?

Eventually I am able to access GMail via IMAP with Apple Mail, but only for about a day before this error occurs again. This doesn't affect my access to GMail via the web interface. Nothing has changed with my use of GMail since before the Snow Leopard upgrade and I've seen scattered reports of this on the 'net, but nothing that nails down a solid connection between the Snow Leopard upgrade and this error.

Jun 16, 2012As I am working on my mail server I would like to ensure that I have some form of back system to prevent me from looosing e-mail messages in the future, specially those that are business related. Once in a while we experience a power outage and I would hate to loose an important business e-mail sent to us at a time when the mail server is down.
1. Is there a way to have/use a remote secondary mail server so that in case an e-mail is sent but can't be delivery to our mail server, it is then re-routed to this secondary mail server so that it isn't lost. In this case how should this be set-up both on the server in OS X 1.6.8 and on the outside?
2. I plan to set up an account with Google or another e-mai service provider but would like my e-mail to use my own domain name instead. How simple would this be to set UP? Will Google allow the creation of e-mail accounts with the use of domain names other than its own?
OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mail Server Hijacked For Spam?
Jun 16, 2012I only have macs in my network and am not aware of any mac viruses. Afer I had the chance to review everything it became clear the e-mail server was sending out e-mails. SMTP logs for my mail server showed numerous attempts between yesterday and today to send out e-mails. Considering my mail server has not yet been launched and is not being used to either send or receive e-mail I imagine the work must have been done by a hacker ro sometoner else who hijacked my mail server to send out spam e-mail to others.
How can I prevent this from happening again the in future? Is there a security setting that would prevent this? My firewall had a relatively long and safe password but I changed it today just in case. Also, I changed the password for both the firewall and server. Will this help or is it possible for a hacker to connect and gain control of mail mail server without the need to know these passwords? If not in OS X Server, is there a third party application that would protect the mail server from this in the future?
OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: New Setup Of Mail Server?
Apr 24, 2012I've googled and searched, I can't see what I'm missing, so I am turning to the community for help, because I simply don't get this. I own 2 domain names. I'd like to use the build in Mail Server application into SL Server, so if your suggestion is using another mail server, please don't post that.
Let's say my domain's are domain1.com and domain2.com I've looked at the Mail Server Admin user guide, and I've followed a couple of wizzards, and... all in all, I am getting no where. Let's also say my email client is my iPhone.
Ok, so domain1.com currently has no email with my current provider, and domain2.com currently has email from my current provider, it's my desire to eventually switch this, but experimenting on domain1.com will do no harm, so I am experimenting on this. Both domains give me the ability to point to an mx address.
Here's what I've done. I've got my user created in Workgroup Administrator, and I am confiuguring my LDAP3v, and I am authenticated enough to create and delete users.
***I Should note that DNS is currently disabled, I gathered from all my reading that I don't need the DNS enabled because I manually put in the MX record to mail.domain1.com and domain1.com is correctly identified. The server is also the webserver, and all the web server functions are working as expected! I don't know if not having the DNS enabled is holding me back or not ***
1st, I enabled the mail service in the Server Admin. My domain name is ServerName.local and my host name is mail.domain1.com (I created an a entry in my dns settings for that). Enable SMTP is set, IMAP and POP are enabled as well.
I don't intend on setting a relay, because I want this server to do send email out. I do have some cases where I send a mass email out, not for spam but for Christmas card purposes, and I think this is a good free way to not have to limit myself to batches of 50 or so.
I have my created SSL certificate, and havce only the Kerberos and CRAM-MD5 settings set in the security.
In my hosting section, I have enabled Virtual hosting, and listed my domain1.com and domain2.com below.
Now in workgroup manager, I've connected to my LDAP3v database and created a test user, and a test group. In the server admin, I added the test group to the list of authenticated mail users. I made my test user a member of the test group, and made that his default group. I enabled the mail service, and set the mail server which is ServerName.local, and enabled POP and IMAP.
That's it. I've done nothing in terminal, just that. I was getting a user unable to authenticate error, it was able to download the certificate though. Then I realzed I had an MXE defined in my settings for my DNS domain manager. So I changed to an MX, to mail.domain1.com and then I created mail.domain1.com pointing to the same IP address as domain1.com, and unfortunately the DNS records haven't updated yet, because I initially didn't create the mail.domain1.com entry, and now it's saying the server isn't responding, so I am anxiously awaiting an update from the DNS in the world to see if the issue has now cleared up.

ICloud :: Moving Mail Boxes From Mail To IMAP Server Error NUL Character In Message
Mar 18, 2012I am migrating my mail and archive folders from Mail to iCloud. I moved 20+ folders and over 8k messages with no problem by dragging and dropping the folder from 'On my mac' section to 'iCloud' section in Mail. The last two folders were the largest with over 1.5k in each folder. Over 1200 of the messages in each went in to iCloud without a hitch. Then I got this error:
The IMAP command “APPEND” (to [mail box name]) failed with server error: Message contains NUL characters.
There are 149 messages left in one folder and 203 in another folder. Try as I might, it will not work. I tried Rebuild mailbox option in menu and exported to Mail and mbox format and then re-importing. Still does not work.

Dec 30, 2008My Mail application (Leopard) is sometimes incredibly delayed in downloading mail from the server. If I have Thunderbird open on the side sometimes I receive mail in it but have to wait 15 minutes before Mail gets it. Also, my iPhone gets the mail in time always, though one would think that the mail fetching system is similar to that in Mail. Does anybody else have this problem and know a way around it? It's really frustrating and I'm considering moving to Thunderbird for good.

We've tried syncing our calendars in many ways and after thinking we found the answer (via mobile me) realized it was a mess because odd appointments kept showing up. So I have two choices. Either make my MAIL and ICAL app sync to the exchange server, or find a way to sync both work (laptop) and personal (the one that would be used as the server at home) without having weird appts coming up on everyone's calendar.

May 10, 2010I'm trying to setup our exchange server with Mail.app. I have full access to the server when I use Safari, but it doesn't work using the client.The server it seems runs "Microsoft Exchange Server 2003", and with the Safari I get into "Outlook Web Access". Isn't it enough for the mail client to work? I use the same server address (path, and port).
