OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Remote Management Using Chicken/VNC Can Not Change Password

Jun 27, 2012

I have been setting up my MacMini for remote access (it functions as a headless server).  To do so I have been using a simple password, '1'.

Now I want to change the password and can not do so in any way.  I can still get in with Chicken if if switch of everything that has to do with sharing and remote access (I am doing this from within the same network, I sit a few meters away form the MM) In setting all this up I also used VineServer, but this is not running at present.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Remote Management Status Icon In It When Screen Sharing?

Jun 12, 2012

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Unfortunately this disabled the remote management status icon in the menu bar? Any way to get it back? Before when I "screen shared" this computer the remote management status icon would appear in the menu bar, now it's gone. I tried enabling remote management but I can't authenticate when I try to connect from my Leopard PowerBook.

Applications :: 27" IMac - Chicken Of The VNC On Snow Leopard

Nov 1, 2009

I bought my first Mac (base model 27" iMac) and recently downloaded Chicken of the VNC. Now I have a puzzling issue. I am able to connect to a Suse Linux Enterprise Server - SP2 box off site but unable to connect to an OpenSuse 11.1 box on my internal network. Every time I try to connect to my internal Linux box I am able to see the login screen, but as soon as I try to type the login id, Chicken of the VNC hangs ( I get the spinning beach ball) and times out. I am puzzled why I have no problem connecting to an off site Linux box but cannot connect to an internal Linux box in the next room. I am able to connect to the Linux box in the next room from another physical Linux box in the same room as my Mac. I have ports 5801 to 5901 open on both the off site router and internal router. The firewall is open to let VNC in on both machines at both locations. The firewall is also currently turned off on my Mac. Next I installed an OpenSuse 11.1 virtual machine on my Mac with Fusion3. I opened a terminal in the Linux VM and I was able to use Tight VNC to connect to my box in the next room with no trouble. In another window on the Mac, I tried Chicken of the VNC, and once again the login screen displays, but I get the spinning beach ball when trying to type into the login screen. The Snow Leopard software compatibility site gives Chicken of the VNC the green OK symbol.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Application For Administrators That Can Provide Both Remote Wipe And Remote Desktop?

Apr 9, 2012

I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Color Management?

Oct 4, 2009

It seems since I switched to Snow Leopard some applications can't print B/W anymore. These are apps like InDesign. Apps that use Color Management. I have played around with the settings but I haven't yet found a way to just print solid black text on my Brother laser printer. Everything comes out dithered.

Example:
I create a music sheet in Finale. Prints fine. Black Characters. Make eps, pdf or tiff files, import into InDesign for a book and InDesign will print the black fonts dithered. It does that to everything, imported or not.

If I print the PDFs that were created by Finale (which doesn't use color management) they print fine.

This dithering also happens when I turn color management off in InDesign. Consequently, when InDesign makes pdf files the solid black comes out as somewhat off black.

OS X :: Best Remote Management Desktop Software? (Preferably Free)

Nov 28, 2010

I am running a headless Mac Mini off of my modem as an Internet gateway, DNS server, mail server, etc. I am just setting it up now, so I am wondering what is the best software (apart from the very expensive Apple Desktop Remote package) to run this Mini from another desktop? If it is also supported by iPad, that's a plus, but really not important as I find remote desktop software on the iPad to be pretty clunky in general. I'd prefer to use free software, but not if it means not opting to use something much better that costs a little money.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Connecting To A Remote Server

I am tryiing to connect to a remote desktop servere which , I think, is Windows based.  I know the IP address which, for example, is 123.45.67.891:2345

When I type this into the "connect remote server" (Finder>Go> Connect remote server) Apple adds a prefix   afp://  .   In the "missing manual" book by David Pogue he suggests the prefix ought be   smb://  for a windows server.  Either way, a dialogue box informs me that attempt has failed whem I try to connect

OS X :: VPN / SSH Server And Secure Remote Access For Snow Leopard

Feb 3, 2010

I would like to ask on how I can connect securely to my iMac at home from my MBP when I'm travelling. I have subscribed to MobileMe, unfortunately, it is not always possible to connect using MobileMe due to technical issues (Many would have agreed that MobileMe are not reliable at times).

What I would like to achieve is the following:

1) Install either a VPN and/or SSH server in my iMac at home

2) Enable access not only my iMac but also my home network and internet connection from my home.

2) Be able to browse using my iMac or AEBS in my home network from my MBP in a secure way (similar to proxy).

I understand that I can setup SSH server and do some port forwarding with it. I need more details or tutorial on this, if you have any link that would be appreicated. Basically, I understand the idea but this would be impractical as I need to setup a lot of forwarding (one forwarding for each service).

So VPN solution may be cleaner in a way. I checked that OpenVPN.net doesn't support newer OSX anymore. Any idea how to do this? I have identified an OpenVPN client that can be used but not the server portion.

MacBook Air :: Installing Snow Leopard With Remote Install?

Apr 21, 2010

I would like to install Snow Leopard on my Macbook Air Rev A as I have work to do that requires 10.6.x - however I didn't buy the Superdrive so need to do this as a remote install.

I have a PC with a DVD drive and can install the software; I also have the USB ethernet dongle and assume this will be better to use than over Wifi

Has anyone got any hints about doing this? I'm slightly nervous about installing an OS upgrade over a network for some reason..

Applications :: Remote Desktop Server Equiv For OSX Snow Leopard?

Dec 15, 2010

Just had my 3 yrs old Mac Mini decomission and set aside in the living hall as a media server recently. While I use the mini primary to watch movies, in which it does great with XBMC, I would like to have the ability to Remote Login (GUI) into the mini WHILE my wife is watching her fav movie CONCURRENTLY without any disturbance. I guess this a old topic i'm revisiting here. I've been googling around and searching this forum, but yet till now, the closest solution I've came to is having OSXvnc (Vine Server) running along with fast using switching, plus some VNC client etc. The worst part of this approach is, each remote user have to log into the physical machine for fast user switching. This is just soooo dodgy as compare to the windoze variant. I'm posting to see, if anyone have a better solution that:

1. each remote user dun have to physically login first
2. I can have concurrent session running (either remote, or local-wife watching movie)

Does the Mac OSX SL Server have something to offer to this problem? And also, I've discovered that The Apple Remote Desktop is more for a network administrator sort of app, totally not related to allowing multiple concurent remote GUI Sessions.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installation On MBA / Installing Using The Remote Disk Feature?

Aug 25, 2009

I purchased a copy of SL that I want to install on my MBA. I know that Leopard can be installed using the remote disk feature since my MBA doesn't have a DVD drive. problem is that I can't find anywhere saying that SL will support that function. Although I did see that the minimum system requirements require a DVD drive, but it doesn't say anything about a remote drive.

I'm sure it would be stupid if it wasn't supported, but then again you can't installed XP without the SuperDrive.

OS X :: Unable To Change Permissions In Leopard / Asks For Admin Password

Apr 7, 2010

On 10.6.2, I noticed that in the Get Info window, permissions for a file could be changed without having to "unlock" the operation with the administrator password. This was not the case in Leopard, which required the admin password before permissions could be changed through the Get Info window.

I found this to be concerning from a security standpoint. I had hoped that 10.6.3 would fix the issue, but it still appears to be a problem. I've noticed this on three different machines, two with clean installs of 10.6 and one with an upgrade from 10.5. Does anyone else notice this issue? Am I right in assuming that this is a security issue? The ability for permissions to be changed for any file directly from the Finder's Get Info window without even an admin password seems to be rather insecure to me.
