I have to re-install my MacBook Pro with the install DVD, Mac OS version 10.6. Only... I'm on the other side of the world and don't have access to my install DVD. A man traveling with me do have the Install DVD, but with version 10.6.6. Can I use this to reinstall?

I am considering reinstalling Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. At the moment I use one hard drive for the System, Applications and Users.
Is it possible (and easy) to install the system to one disk, and the applications and users to another disk?Or do some applications prefer to be on the same disk as the system?
I installed Snow Leopard long after installing OS X5.5, now updated to 10.6.8. If I have to erase the HD and reinstall all software, Would I have to use the install CD's for both 10.5.5 and Snow Leopard?

The disc drive simply does not work. It will accept discs but will not read them. The other major problem is that vista is the only operating system on the computer, because I used to use it as a ventrilo server, and as a WoW server for about a week. Now, i'm wondering, is there any way to install leopard not from a disc, but from a hard drive? I have a legitimate copy of leopard and am really annoyed right now because I would like to take the computer in for repairs but cannot do so because of vista.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to re-install leopard on my G5 with no success. I boot the machine up start the installation wizard from my desktop, it says that the wizard will continue after re-starting, and then proceeds to reboot.
However on booting my PM always ejects the CD, does anybody know how I can turn this off, as at the minute it's just restarting and booting back to my desktop each time.
1. Am I supposed to run any kind of disk maintenance (repairing permissions for example) prior to reinstalling Leopard?

Since all of my apps are going to be downgraded to its previous versions that originally came with Leopard installation DVDs, and my OS is going to be downgraded to 10.5.3 (I am on 10.5.7 at the moment), I am in a dilemma. Is it better to go with step-by-step update of Leopard (first download 10.5.4 and install it, than 10.5.5, etc...) or go directly to 10.5.7 from 10.5.3 (I think combo update is all about that, correct me if I am wrong)
3. About all the apps that go with Leopard (iTunes, iMovie, Quick Time Player)... Do you suggest me to update them as soon as I install 10.5.3 or to update to 10.5.7 first and then install all the application updates?

Now that I've got all my required work software installed it's basically turning out that I really should have made it a lot larger. Is there a way to resize without having to reinstall everything? I remember back in my dual booting Windows and Linux days there was a program called Partition Magic that just sorta really magically, it seemed like, did whatever you wanted with partitions on the fly. ... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store).When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.

The main problem I've had is that I couldn't find my original installation discs (the macbook pro was bought in April 2008), I used my friends OS X disc (from his computer which was about 2 years older) and it seemed to install ok until I realised that the sound is gone, airport is gone and all the keys have different shortcuts to their original ones.
I'm installing my new SSD tonight and then using my old hd as an external drive for backup. It's brand new so the only thing on it is a couple days of web history After I install the SSD do I just use the restore disks to reload the OS?

I have an imac with leopard OS and a macbook pro with snow leopard on it, and I can't seem to connect the two computers. Even when they are directly connected with ethernet cable, I can see the imac but not connect with it. I can connect to the macbook from the imac, but not vice-versa. My network is ethernet through linksys WRT610 router. Repeated attempts to connect from the macbook result in "connection failed" message and "imac may not exist or is not available."

I am wondering if it is beneficial to just start over with Firefox....meaning, how do I completely uninstall and reinstall it? I have read that even when you do an uninstall process, that it keeps things on your hard drive. Can anyone explain (remember, novice terminology please) how to go about getting anything & everything related to Firefox OFF of my computer, then just reinstall it?? Don't have original installation DVD so used legally acquired Mac OSX. Now instead of folder, the Apple logo appears with spinning gears but otherwise unresponsive. Can't install or eject DVD.
