I just upgraded to SL. Now I got crazy on my Trash. Whenever and Whatever I drag a file, a movie, a pic, everything, it will not move the the trash. Instead system warms me "This item will be detect immediately, you can't undo this action." And the item is detect directly. I always have a empty trash.
My TM backup files are getting unnecessarily large so I would like to delete them and rescan my computer again. However, I don't want to risk deleting my TM backups and have the computer fail, so I wanted to copy the backups temporarily to a spare disk until the new backup had been completed successfully. So can the TM backups be moved just like any other file?
This happens frequently lately: "Latest backup failed. Files couldn't be copied on backup-disk because it seems to be Read Only. After I "verify" the disk in Disk Utility, it works for a while, then the same problem. What can I do?
I recently moved my itunes library from PC to a NAS to use with my new Mac. With the exception of a couple hiccups everything was fine. I then asked iTunes to copy all the music to my ipod and convert the tracks to 256mb (I have re-ripped my cd collection as lossless and chosen the option to replace existing copies of the songs which were lossy).Â
I have 264GB of music in my iTunes library but when I looked at my NAS just now I saw 540GB of music backed up!! I then looked in one folder and saw every song had been duplicated so songs were named things like "Song.m4a" and "Song1.m4a", but this hasn't happened in every album folder - of course I have way too many to go through them individually.Â
How I can stop it from continuing and most importantly how to clear all the duplicates from the folders on my NAS so it only holds the 264GB of music that the iTunes library displays.Â
I'm trying to move emails from the "On My Mac" section from one mac to my new one. I've successfully transferred the folders from ~/Library/Mail and they show up, but the folders are empty when I open the mail application on my new mac the folders are empty.
I am trying to speed up Re-Labeling all my metadata for every song in my library. Basically I need to create a workflow first, but I am having some troubles on how I should be doing it in Automater.
Example filename: "forrestaveryderty_driftinonby_flapjack.m4a"Â find all filenames that start with the same word before the First underscore (_)Â create a folder with that same wordÂ
copy files with the same word (BEFORE THE FIRST UNDERSCORE) to their corresponding folder name I then can use Media Rage to select the certain folder and and change the artist name all at once. and I would like it to do that with every file at one time.Â
again...Â
1: Find files with the same name before the first "underscore"
2: Create a a folder for every different name found (before the first underscore)
3: Copy found files (with same name before the first underscore) to the folder with the same name
I am dragging and dropping a logo into Mail.app signature pane. The image is saved as a jpg, when I drag into the mail signature pane it's file name is 'PastedGraphic.tiff'. I am assuming there is file format preference somewhere that can keep the image either it's original format, or convert to a jpg, vs. a .tifÂ
Most other email clients won't display this format. .
I really prefer Windows way of sorting a folder, first folders and then files, is there a way to do it in Snow Leopard? I have done this: [URL:...] But that doest work for me in SL.
I'm pretty new to Mac and I'm currently quite confused about how to set default settings for all my files and folders in Snow Leopard. Specifically, I would like for all the icons in Finder windows (and preferably also in the "Documents" stack in the Dock) to automatically be displayed as large icons and also for all my files and folders to be arranged by Kind - all of this in "List View". In "Icon View", all of these things do work (except for in the "Documents" stack in the Dock).
In "List View", when I select "Use as Defaults" in the "View Options" panel (View>Show View Options), it does not seem to apply my settings automatically to all my folders and files. Likewise, when I right-click in a Finder window and select "Arrange by > Kind", it only seems to arrange by Kind in that particular folder.
I have read several other threads, but none of the solutions seem to work for me. One thread suggested that I hold "alt" after I have right-clicked so that the option "KEEP arranged by" shows up, but this does not seem to happen in "List View".
i have Macbook pro running on Mac OS X, Snow Leopard ver. 10.6.8 . I am not able to delete rename and modify my desktop folder and files. even through the admin account and all previleges i cant move them to Thrash. as i try to delete them it asks for password and then no action takes place. i have even used repair permissions from disk utility, used the terminal window method but nothing happened. the "get info " shows read and write permision but still i cannot even rename them there.
I have an appointment to bring my iMac in tomorrow for service at an Apple store.I think all I need is for the inside of the front glass to be cleaned, and they told me I shouldn't need to leave it, but who knows. I just realized that I haven't ever brought any computer in for service in 20 years of owning them (I've been lucky, I guess).I want to do everything I can to protect my privacy.I've moved sensitive documents and information off both internal hard drives.I've emptied the trash.I've also cleared the history and cache on all three browsers I use.
I'm not going to go to the trouble to move all video files and pictures off my internal hard drives. It's way too much data. There is definitely stuff I consider private that I don't want others to look at, but I just can't see moving all of it.I'd love to password-protect the folders so nobody can get in them, but apparently that isn't possible (I don't want to go through creating encrypted disk images--again, way too much data). Is there anything else I should do to protect my privacy before I bring my computer in for service? Is there any easy way to password-protect folders and files? I went in Finder and locked one folder, but it still opens up with no problem, so that didn't help.I presume this is because I'm the only one who uses my computer and I don't require a password on startup.I also presume that such a password wouldn't prevent techs from looking at something if they were so inclined.
I'm not as worried about all of this as I would be if I were bringing the computer in to some independent servicer (instead of the Apple store where I'm bringing it).But I really don't like the idea that the techs will have access to everything on my hard drives while they are servicing my computer.
How I can sort my files within folders in a specific order? Not in alphabetical order, size, date, kind etc...but in an order that I want them in (documents from school to be exact, I would like to sort them in the progression of the lessons from week to week). I never knew how to do this at the time and now I am kind of learning how to sort all of my docs within Finder, but this seems to be the first stumbling block that I've come across?
My settings do not allow for sharing of my iMac or its folders and files. Yet, another person's Shared Folder is appearing on my iMac and I cannot remove it. How do I remove it and did it get there by this person hacking in?
I copied some image files from a flash drive (jpeg format). When I go to view in folder they appear to not be there. When I try to copy again, msg says something like cannot change invisible file. what can i do to make these image files visible?
I have copied some image files (jpeg format) from a flash drive onto my imac. When I go to view the images they do not appear. When I try to copy them again, there is a message that I cannot modify invisible images. These images were originally downloaded to a windows-based computer and copied to the flash drive. Is there a way to make these image files visible? I am trying to use them for a website.
I've set some share folders, from windows xp I can open the folders (even create files) and see the child folders but when I try to open them I get access denied.
I'm using snow leopard 10.6 on a mac mini, can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this?
Today, I am not able to delete messages, I get this; The message "message name here" could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash On My Mac" The operation couldn't be completed. File exists.
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 27 inch core i7, 1TBHD, 4GB Ram
still getting used to apple osx i just copied the app candybar and imported several folders of icons. However now when i try to make a new collection and add more icons it doesnt show the icons would i have to reinstall the app any advice would be great.
I am trying to transfer files to a USB stick that I've been using for ages. About halfway through it won't transfer any more files and says they "can't be copied because there isn't enough free space". USB stick is totally empty and the size of the files is much less than the capacity of the stick
I have freed up 6 GB on my hard drive (unused capacity now 79/500 GB) and have repaired disk permissons. Repaired USB stick, tried a different stick, turned it off & turned it back on again. I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Also I could transfer the entire folder across, but then when I tried to get the files out of the folder directly onto the drive, the same thing happened. Also they all seem to be fine and I can access them on a PC which is why I need them on the stick.
I copied some file from one external drive to another and the folders doesn't show an arrow which I could click to show the contents of the folder. When I do get info it doesn't show the size of the folder but the hard drive that I copied from does. How do you make it show the arrow and size?
This only happens when she copies files between internal hard drives. After copying the files, she verifies that files exist in both locations. She then deletes the files in the old location. Then, newly copied files are missing from the new location.
I've never heard of this happening before, except for with improperly unmounted external drives. I have run disk utility and verified that there are no problems with either drive.
On several separate occasions, one of our users has had trouble with files "disappearing."

Newbie from windows to Mac SL. I download two programs for my Cannon scanner and found them installed in Applications. I created a new folder called Cannon and moved both programs into it. In the folder, there is now a file called "Open in Finder" as well which I did not add.
Question. 1. Is it ok to move files into a new folder this way? 2. Is it normal to have "Open in Finder" also inserted in the folder?
Reason I am asking is, when I initially run the scanner program I get this multiple colour ball momentarily. It is almost as if the OS is looking for the location of the scanner program - similar to an hour glass in windows. Therefore, should I delete the folder I created and reinstall the scanner programs? If so, should I delete the programs first, then the folder, or go ahead and delete the folder with the programs in it?
Just made the move to a Mac yesterday. I have searched on-line and in forums, but I can't find the answer to my problem. I am importing 500 gig of photos which have been obsessively organized on my pc. When I import them (only 1.5 gig this first time), the images are being moved from their original folders and organized by date in iPhoto. I'm sure there is a setting somewhere that I need to tweak, but I haven't been able to find it. Having looked closer, I see there are multiple folders for each year, with seemingly no logic to the pictures that are placed in each.
I have a strange problem that I cannot solve. I have a couple of avi DiVX movies that I created for my son to watch but I have done them on Mac and if I copy them to the external HDD directly from Mac, my Popcorn Hour NMT A-110 does not play them until I simply copy the file to a PC hard drive and then back to that HDD. This drive HDD is NTFS and write to the drive via Paragon NTFS driver. I am curious what happens during a file copy from that hard drive to a PC and back that somehow unlocks the file and makes it playable. Any ideas? Is it a paragon driver?
When I access another Mac via Airport (using Safari and typing in an address such as afp://192.168.1.3), I can access the other Mac by typing in the password, its disk will appear on my Desktop, but a small red dash appears in User folders such as Desktop, and if I try to open the folder it says I don't have permission.
We have six mac computers in our office and we keep our files on a network drive that is accessed wirelessly. One of our folders has 40 or so client project folders inside it. I've discovered that on my iMac, about ten of these folders have lost their original status when I booted up this morning (they were all originals yesterday) and are now aliases demanding to be fixed or deleted. No one has copied them, moved them, and some haven't even been opened since April. I've done some research online and it seems this problem often gets blamed on moving a file or copying a file and the file/folder itself is written off as dead. But the extremely crazy thing is on the other 5 computers in this office, they can access the files as originals (which they are). I had one of my coworkers make a duplicate of one of my aliased folders, which she did, and then I was able to open it and use the contents. But about an hour later, it was suddenly an alias again and I no longer had access. We've had this problem on more than one computer in the office, but never the same folder at the same time. It can always be accessed from somewhere, so what causes one computer to suddenly view an original folder as an alias, while another computer can view that same folder as an orignal.
