my MacBook Pro was stolen last year and retrieved recently. I erased all the data via disk utilities as I couldn't access the laptop - it was asking me for a username and password made during the period it was stolen. So the next step was to reinstall OS. But when I try reinstall it, it asks me for my Apple ID - which I give - and then tells me this ID wasn't used to purchase Mountain Lion previously, which I'm well aware of- it was installed on the laptop when I bought it in 2011! My Apple support has expired so I can't ask them either!
ps I have a disk with the software on it but can't get out of Restore mode on the laptop, even when I restart it. So I can't do it that way either it seems
While I was creating a new signature, Mail locked up on me. After doing a Force Quit, I found that half of my signatures are blank. I'm running Time Machine, but haven't been able to find the location in my directory, so I don't know where to look for when I go back into my backups.Â
In three and a half years with my Macbook, this is the first time I've lost anything.Â

Ever since I upgraded to snow leopard since it came out, I have been having problems with updates, such as iPhoto, iTunes everything and anything. Whenever there is a new update released by apple and I open up for example iTunes it tells me there is an update available, so I click on update. It downloads when it is done I click install, when it is installing I get an error saying:
The Update "Compressor Update" can't be saved. The update could not be expanded and verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs.
I have started having trouble with PDFs in Safari this week. I can see them on screen, but if I try to save them by Save As command, I get a message saying it cannot be exported as a xxx.pdf. If I try doing it through the Print command, saving it as a PDF, the preview window shows a blank document. Something has fundamentally changed in the last week.

Whenever I need to restart my MacBook Pro, a bunch of my preferences are lost. For example, I have to drag Google Chrome back in the dock. I lose my Expose preferences, login items I've disabled still pop up. Keyboard shortcuts with Spotlight (which I keep disabled because of a program I use), get set to default. It's terrbily frustrating to have to reset all these things over and over again and I can't find the answer. Part of it is I'm not terribly saavy with computer language. I can find the Terminal and type in commands though.

why are my saved photoshop file icons pixelated? I have not changed any settings but suddenly my saved file icons have become pixelated. The file opens normally and seems fine.

My older model MacBook Pro has been crashing quite frequently (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo runming OS X 10.6.8).I took it into the Apple store today and they said the culprit is my failing hard drive. It's not my original hard drive as I had a larger one installed some time ago. I did not have it installed at an Apple store but rather at an authorized third party store. The Genius Bar employtee today told me that if it's within a year of purchase, that third party store will most likely replace it under warranty. Unfortunately I am not currently in the city where this store is but I will call them today to see when it was that I purchased the drive. If it's been over a year, I want to tell them that these crashes did not start today but several months ago. we can go by the date of the first crashes as opposed to today's date as perhaps that will fall within the 12 month rule. However, when I look in the CrashReporter or DiagnosticReport folders in the Library and Logs folders, I'm only finding the most recent crashes. Are older crashed saved and accessable someplace else?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a macbook air user and I have a problem with my document saving. I was doing a project and I put the information I needed in a document. I am pretty sure i saved it cause I remember I checked the name of it. It was yesterday and today I can't find it anywhere. It's not in recent document and I can't find it in spotlight or document searching or even trash. I checked the available space in the macintosh hd and I have nearly 1/3 left. It's fine if I can't find this doc i will just redo it but I'm really worried what if next time if something really important goes missing and I don't want to do that again!

I was trying to open an existing Numbers document saved to my desktop. It took me to the App Store, but I didn't have access to a Wireless network. If it needed an update, why does it require the update to open an existing/previously saved document?Â

I'm using OSX Snow Leopard. Spotlight was unable to find a document in a folder. It found several others that have almost the same name, but not the one I was looking for. By scrolling down in the finder window I found it without spotlight right away.Â
To better explain my problem:
I was looking for a document that was called "Paperless". Spotlight found several document in different folders like "Paperlessone", Paperless2" etc. But not able to find "Paperless"Â
I checked the Spotlight options and it says, that it is looking for everything.

Anyone noticed when making Combined pdf files (into single document) that Acrobat Pro only shows the first page, and not the full document. Meaning that one has to manually pull the sidebar down to scroll other pages? My install went perfectly, aside from a few minor glitches, Illustrator and Photoshop (CS4) quit now and again, but removed permissions, restarted and repaired permissions and is a lot more manageable now.
Safari and Mail are almost twice as fast now. Let's see how soon 10.6.1 appears.
Not too long ago I looked through the list of things I had put in the Trash. Some how I over looked a document I should have removed from the Trash and Empetyed Trash. There is some way to locate what has been empteyed from the Trash and get it onto the Desktop. How do I do that?Â
I have not Secured Empty Trash... so my document should still be able to be found and removed from the Emptey Trash.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lion I've experienced periodic crashes- my 24" iMac (2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory) suddenly shut down using iPhoto, Safari, and/or Pages. After running numerous hardware diagnostic tests I was told it was not a hardware problem, and a complete reinstall of Lion and all Apple software was recommended. I had back-ups on a My Book which I thought I could easily use to restore my personal data. I was directed to drag files between Finder windows rather than try to restore from backup via Time Machine. All was well & good until I tried to restore my numerous mail folders and locally-saved emails.
Evidently Mail is a hidden folder... I've been told by user group buddies how to see the hidden Mail folder on my iMac, but not on the My Book. Trying to restore from back-up via Time Machine is not an option, as I guess it doesn't recognize the newly installed system. Also tried going into Mail and importing, but when I navigate to the backup there is no visible Mail folder. Another suggestion was to try 3rd party software i.e. Back in Time or BackUp Loupe. I keep thinking there's some secret key combination, some easy way I just don't know of to retrieve my Mail data from the backup... is there???

iPhoto '11, Time Machine backing up to My Book
Originally I had directly cloned my black mb running 10.5 to my new 13 inch unibody MBP that had a new blank internal HD put in. I thought it worked perfectly, but I guess because of driver issues, it would freeze up a lot so everyone told me I needed a fresh install.
Before I got rid of the old macbook, I made a time machine backup to a WD external, as well as a carbon copy backup (saved a spareimage).
Can you tell me how to do system restore on mac
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a little new to Time Machine, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this? I am currently using Time Machine to backup my Mac. I am running Leopard and I want to move to Snow Leopard when it comes out. When i get Snow Leopard, I will perform a reformat on my hard drive so its a nice fresh install. My question is what options will I get when I get when I go to install it as I have Time Machine? I'll be honest and say I'll be happy to just copy across my iTunes, iPhoto, contacts and calender over to Snow Leopard and not worry about anything else (stuff like downloading Firefox takes seconds and isn't a problem). Is this an option? Can i just install Snow Leopard totally fresh, then connect the Time Machine drive and copy the iTunes (etc etc) folders/files/docments over to my fresh install?
