Feb 13, 2012I cannot apply custom icons. When I try, it applies a generic image file icon (rectangle, loop on picture, folded corner). Why?

When I set a view option and then click "Use as default" it doesn't apply to all the folders throughout the system. This worked every time in Leopard like Billy D. Williams' Colt .45, and now? BROKED!
Come on Apple! You do a great job at making things work, such so that we have to bring ourselves to THIS! Batching about so little an issue as not applying my pretty background color to all my windows! If you're going to break something at least break something worth fixing!
Anybody heard of a fix for this?

Mar 1, 2009 i was customizing my desktop icons for music, games, and downloads.basically (for my music) its the itunes icon with a folder background, so the itunes logo fits perfectly in the middle.

Jun 22, 2010I put custom icons in place of alot of my folders and other things in OSX, the problem is that after i changed the Finder icon and then booted up in safe mode to make it change like i was told to do my Safari Firefox and Garageband icons have all gone missing. and have been replace with the generic app symbol. the ICNS files with the new icons are still in the right folders, they're just not showing up...

Jul 27, 2009I am customizing my brand new iMac 24". Just switching from M$! I changed the default icon of my folder and I put it on the Dock. Everything fine, but the dock seems to adopt the icon of what it is INSIDE the folder, not the custom icon of the containing folder.
I wonder if I can force Dock to respect the custom icon of the folder (when there are several documents inside the folder, Dock uses the standard icon - not the new, custom one).

Oct 21, 2008I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.5. I realized that whenever I open the finder window in Leopard, all icons (especially documents and image files) automatically changes to custom icons with a miniature image of the contents.
in Tiger, the only time you got the custom icon is if you specifically generated one.
How do I turn off this feature? I just want to see generic icons for documents.

Feb 25, 2012I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X. Â I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon. Â
Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app. Â I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine. Â Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings. Â In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable. Â
when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc. Â Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies?

Nov 17, 2010One of the side benefits of getting my new iMac is that I get to see how a system looks when it's brand new, before I've messed with it.
When I set up Time Machine on my iMac I notice that the HD icon used looks pretty cool with a circular arrow on top. I didn't download it from some web site, it came that way. Over on my MacBook Pro the Time Machine HD icon is just white. I have no idea how it got that way.
My question is how do I get my MacBook Pro's Time Machine HD icon to look like the one on my iMac? Is there some hidden cache of icons on my system?
OS X :: Can't Change Icons With Snow Leopard
Dec 30, 2010I know this has been addressed before, but the answers didn't work for me, so I posted a reply in that thread but got no responses, so I'm starting over.
With 10.4, all I had to do to change an icon for a folder or website was copy and paste. These were for icons I wanted in my dock to make them easy to find. Otherwise the default seems to be either that ubiquitous satellite dish or a boring documents icon.
But now, even though I can still do the get info/copy & paste routine, and the new icon shows up in the folder or the desktop, when I drag that icon to the dock it reverts to that crummy satellite dish. When I installed 10.6 on my new iMac, it kept some of my dock icons - the ones I had created - and dumped others. And kept me from creating new ones for the dock.

Apr 29, 2012I have a 2nd monitor attached to my MBAir. I have icons (folders, a few files, and some aliases - not a lot!!) positioned on both monitors. I can work this way just fine for days. (Yes, I do restart nightly and, yes, after a basic restart all the icons stay put.) But sometimes, out of the blue, something happens that causes all the icons on the 2nd monitor to line up on the border between the two screen displays (i.e., almost off the 2nd monitor but not quite completely onto the MBAir's display). Â
This seems to be related to saving a file onto the desktop -- say, when I'm using Safari on the 2nd monitor and I drag the address bar address to save a webloc file. However, I can do this more often than not with no odd effects. (However, lately I've started dragging into a FOLDER on the desktop to avoid this.) Now, I just watched it happen when all I did was save a tiny .TXT file to the desktop. Of course I can fix things by dragging everything back to where it was (plus, I typically do a Restart before that since I figure something has gone amiss with the system so I'd like to clean things out). But what I'd really like is to figure out is why this is happening in the first place so that I can prevent it ... or, at least, so that I can stop doing whatever special behavior is causing it.Â

Nov 4, 2009After updating to 10.6.1 snow leopard, I noticed a weird bug: when I first open the applications folder after logging in, the applications all have the "no icon" icon, the icon you get when the application doesn't have an icon. Slowly, the icons start to show up. It appears as if it isn't caching them. Is that possible? Is this a known issue that apple is fixing, or is something wrong here? I have heard from another person who is having this issue as well. If it matters, I use list view. [URL]
