OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Easy Way To Password-protect Folders And Files?

Mar 21, 2012

I have an appointment to bring my iMac in tomorrow for service at an Apple store.I think all I need is for the inside of the front glass to be cleaned, and they told me I shouldn't need to leave it, but who knows. I just realized that I haven't ever brought any computer in for service in 20 years of owning them (I've been lucky, I guess).I want to do everything I can to protect my privacy.I've moved sensitive documents and information off both internal hard drives.I've emptied the trash.I've also cleared the history and cache on all three browsers I use.

I'm not going to go to the trouble to move all video files and pictures off my internal hard drives. It's way too much data. There is definitely stuff I consider private that I don't want others to look at, but I just can't see moving all of it.I'd love to password-protect the folders so nobody can get in them, but apparently that isn't possible (I don't want to go through creating encrypted disk images--again, way too much data). Is there anything else I should do to protect my privacy before I bring my computer in for service? Is there any easy way to password-protect folders and files? I went in Finder and locked one folder, but it still opens up with no problem, so that didn't help.I presume this is because I'm the only one who uses my computer and I don't require a password on startup.I also presume that such a password wouldn't prevent techs from looking at something if they were so inclined.

I'm not as worried about all of this as I would be if I were bringing the computer in to some independent servicer (instead of the Apple store where I'm bringing it).But I really don't like the idea that the techs will have access to everything on my hard drives while they are servicing my computer.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Using Disk Utility To Password Protect Folder?

Mar 27, 2012

I have used Disk Utility to attempt to password protect a folder but its not working for me. I go to FILE>NEW>DISK IMAGE FROM FOLDER I then highlight the folder I want to password protect and click the IMAGE button. In the window that pops up, I then select 128 bit encryption and leave image format on COMPRESSED.Then I enter and verify the password I want to place on the folder and hit OK.The resulting disk image appears to have been modified, but when I double click on the supposedly password secured folder, nothing happens.  The folder doesn't open, nor does a window pop up asking for a password.I'm running snow leopard.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Malware Checker/remover By Etresoft?

Apr 7, 2012

Was just wondering if anyone else had tried the Malware checker by etresoft? It is posted here:[URL]..What kind of experience did you have?

I posted this: I downloaded and now have run your malware checker, and it asks me if I want to Delete or Keep a file::

Delete file 'com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-mynamehere(AT symbol here)me.comSharedServices.Agent.plist' that runs program '/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/CSConfigD otMacCert'?

The first time I ran the checker and just chose Keep.  It then asked a similar question and I chose Keep again.  Then it checked programs, etc.  I rebooted and ran it again, and go the same message.  This time, I just did not answer and the script time ran out.

What does this mean?  Do I have malware??[URL]...Has anyone else used this Malware checker/remover??

OS X :: Password Protect A USB Key ?

Is there a way to define a password on any USB key, so the computer asks for a password each time the key is mounted on the desktop ? Will it also work on any PC (not just Macs) ?

I suspect it isn't currently possible.

If it isn't possible, how do you protect the files on a USB key ? I don't want to compress the files and encrypt them...

MacBook :: How To Protect MB?

Apr 7, 2009

I have had my blackbook for a while now. I have bought a cheap ebay cover that covers the keyboard as well as the palm part and it works good (I think) except it is starting to rip and does place keymarks on my screen. I have some dirt on the bottom of my screen under the plastic and in the hindge I see.

I need to find a way to clean it all and keep my keyboard and palm rest clean. I am a college student and on the go all the time so keeping a cloth and such in the middle is kind of hard.

But is there any other way of keeping my macbook in nice shape. I do have scratches on the outside but that is a different story.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook :: Finding Better Way Of Protect

Oct 30, 2010

I've had my 2010 Macbook since it launched and this thing just attracts grime and scratches. I literally left my Macbook on my desk for a day and all of a sudden it has two jagged scratches near the apple just by sitting on desk!

Now after that happened, I bought a Caselogic sleeve to protect it when not in use but now I have a green stain near the power indicator on the side of the palm rest. I tried cleaning it off with soap and water, it didn't work.

Then I googled it and I heard toothpaste might take out stains, so I tried that and it came off now but then it returned a couple of days later when I wasn't using the sleeve, so I figured it's not the problem. Cleaned it again with toothpaste and now there's a just a faint green stain I just can't get rid of.
