OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Why Is Java For 10.5 Systems No More Supported
Apr 19, 2012
The computer I use at work is 2.5 years old and there is no more support?I work on a web based system 90% of my daily work and it works with Java Applets. In Safari I have a buggy Java Applet which doesn't show and work as it should. In Firefox since the Java version gets blocked, the browser completely crashes after allowing FF to use the Java Plugin anyway. In Chrome I cannot start the Applet even when I allow Chrome to do this. I can not update to the latest system as I don't have the App Store to update to 10.7 How is it possible that 10.5 is no more supported?

I made a Java applet with Xcode 3.2Â and i load it to firefox or Safari(Yeah i've updated my java)and for exampleÂ
i made a HELLO WORLD simple applet to be in black color letters, then compiled and yeah it worked but then i redid it for the letters to be red.. and they kept being black..no matter how many times i recompiled the applet.Â
And yeah the HTML is pointing to the correct class file. Also, If if i add a Thread and implement runnable.. then nothing shows up in the canvas.Â
And also, what ever happened with the appletviewer application? We don't have that anymore.
now the only way to run applets is through a web browser. Â Is java applet developement in 10.6 really over?

I have bought myself a copy of Snow Leopard, single user upgrade version ($29). I have not yet installed it, but I'm curious:
Lets say I install it on my MacBook Pro and that in a few months I buy a SSD to replace my current HDD. I would probably opt to go for a clean install (I am pondering whether or not to do it now) and copy over some important files. Would this work? Or would the install disk see my new SSD as another computer?

Hey all. I have an odd question for you guys. My friend's PowerBook G4 crashed hard yesterday and she had to reinstall OS X (she lost all her stuff). She has 10.3, but she is having a hard time finding apps that will run under it. I did some research for her and found that her system should be able to run 10.5, which would make life a lot easier for her as just about all apps run under 10.5. The one problem with this is I am not sure if her system can handle it.
Here are the specs she gave me:
PowerBook G4
1GHz
512MB RAM
Does anyone know if this is enough to run Leopard well?? ATM she just need something that will get online, download torrents, and play DVDs. She is a musician and she has composition software that ran under 10.3. Not sure if it will run under 10.4, but ATM she just wants the system back to "useable" condition. If she can't run 10.5, she should be able to upgrade to 10.4 right? She will have more trouble finding apps that are compatible, but at least it will run better then 10.3 does.

I am having problems with a partition that I use as my Time Machine backup. I have searched various previous discussions but can't seem to find a solution. My HDD is split into 2 partitions and the Time Machine one doesn't mount, the other works fine. When I try to mount it using Disk Utility I get the error message: "The disk X could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting".  Then without doing anything else I get another message "Mac OS X can't repair the disk X. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can." Which disappeared after a few seconds and the partition mounted. When I try to repair the disk I get the above error message and another: "Disk Utility stopped repairing X. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files." This appears after it says 'Updating boot support partitions…'. When mounted, I can open it in Finder, but when I try to copy 'Backups.backupdb' I get a message saying "The operation can't be completed because it isn't supported." This is the same for 'X's Computer' and each backup folder. I can copy files and folders in each backup folder but this would be very tedious and probably Time Machine wouldn't be able to use the resulting files. I have tried restoring the partition, through Disk Utility, to another HDD, but it just copies across the error. Disk Utility has been rather buggy as well, hanging on various operations involving the partition.

I was running java 1.6.0_33 on my Mac Lion and later I installed java 1.7.0_05. Now in my Java preferences I see both the Java SE available. Now my problem is when I enable Java 7(& select Enable applet plug-in and Web start applications), my JNLP file doesn't run with java web start, from Safari as well as Firefox. When I try running the jnlp using Open With option and selecting Java Web Start present in /System/Library/CoreServices, nothing happens.Â
When I try running the JNLP file from Terminal suing command /System/Library/CoreServices/Java Web Start.app/Contents/MacOS/Java Web Start xyz.jnlp I get following errorÂ

As above really! Its really frustrating. It bounces in the dock as though it is about to start. It then brings up a box that asks if I would like to report it to Apple, which naturally I do.Â
My friend suggested uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its no good!Â
Its ever since the update to Java. Anyone else had similar problems?Â
