I installed the new EFI update for my MBA Mid 2011 (the software updater said it is recomended). The update went fine and restarted the mac afterwards.Â
Then while booting the apple logo turns to a grey forbidden sign and nothing happens from there. I turned the mac off and tried again. Same thing.Â
Then I booted the recovery partition and tried to repair my disk. It says that it can't repair the disk because it is corrupted.Â
I have to erase the disk. There is some unbackuped data on it and I can't get it out using a linux-live because my disk is encrypted.
after the update from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 , when system restart, the apple logo remains, and the mac will not start.
How can I do to solve this common problem of 10.7.4?

After having updated my iTunes, I restarted my Mac. The battery then went out and now I can not start the machine. The screen is white with the apple, and a spinning wheel under it. How do I start my Mac?

I was just doing What I thought was a standard software upgrade of iPhoto when, during the restart it said something unexpected had happened or something like that and just froze. Now when I try to restart I get the white screen with the apple , then an error message "pnic(CPU 0 caller 0xfffff800064ba7b): unable to find driver for this platform: ..." and it keeps going on Another box says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button..." when I do this, it just comes back to the same place. Â

after install, only get the spinning card- no startup. tried all startup key combinations and zapped PRAM. also ran disc utility and hardware check- hardware is fine all I get is nothing. noticed others reporting problems with the update on another thread, but my mac won't even start up. do not want to have to reinstall OS and 3rd party apps. any suggestions? would it help to take to apple store geniuses- can they somehow bypass the update and get it started up?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a message to install the latest security update, but the updater froze when I told it to install. Now I cannot start any new applications or processes (activities like copying files, emptying trash, etc. don't work) The apps which were running before are still working (but once closed, will not re-open) I dare not restart or put the computer to sleep. (Possibly software update freezing was a symptom rather than the cause - it is consistent with processes failing to start) I guess this means a system file has been corrupted, but without a working copy/paste and no terminal I don't know what I can do about it. All I have is a browser (firefox) and finder running. Is there any way I can recover the system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently I've been frustrated by having Mac OS X automatically downloading all software updates without asking. Sometimes I am on an internet connection where my downloading is limited and I don't want to be wasting the bandwidth on multiple updates that I don't need that urgently. I feel like earlier versions of OS X never started downloading the update without your permission to start the updating process. Is there anyway to ensure that the OS doesn't perform such tasks without having to resort turning off my wireless? I'm running 10.5.6 on a MacBook.

but I just did a MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 to my MBP,and when I restarted the computer, the computer made unusual beep for a second before it was getting ready to boot,
im fairly new to the mac so i don't know if that's normal..
so the question is, is it normal for the macs to make that beep( not the starting sound) ?
I was trying to update my G5 to snow leopard from leopard 10.5.5 when it said it could not install. So I decided to quit installation and boot from 10.5.5. It started up and reaches the apple loading screen but goes off without reaching the log in screen. I have tried booting from the CD again and resetting the PRAM but it still wont work and continues to do the same
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Mid 2011 iMac 27" i7 will no longer start after the latest EFI update. I decided to perform some system updated on my iMac and after installing 10.7.3, I rechecked and it found the EFI update and one other update. They were both pretty small (the largest was 3.6MB), so I decided to proceed prior to getting back to business with my system. After downloading the updates (took about 5 seconds), the machine proceeded to restart. There was a loud beep prior to the system restart chime after which it went to the grey-white apple startup screen with the spinning wheel. And it stayed there. After 35 minutes with no discernable progress, I decided something must be wrong. This system normally takes about 30 seconds to boot from a cold state (it's running on an OWC SSD) or maybe a minute after updates. So I held the power button to reboot. But it keeps going to the same state. I tried to reboot to a different internal drive holding the option key, but the same thing happens.Â
System Specs:
iMac 27" i7 3.4 Ghz (mid 2011) 12G Ram
Internal 1TB Apple HD
Internal OWC SSD 240G (main startup drive)Â
1. How do I recover from this?
2. Is anyone else running into this problem?
3. How long do the EFI updates normally take?
4. Shouldn't there be some sort of "progress bar" to indicate something is going on during this process? Or, if not, then perhaps a "WARNING!! This process will take up to two hours, during which you will receive no discernable feedback. Do not interrupt the process until more than 24 hours have passed with the spinning ball."Â Â
P.S. I think this is my last iMac EFI update. After my last iMac received an EFI update (2009 model 24" iMac), it became ultra-flakey and started corrupting HD's. It never worked the same after that. This machine was working PERFECTLY before the update.

If you want the rest of the multi page thread I will paste it.
I have tried restarting the machine and no dice. I thought of reinstalling itunes from apples site but each time I go there its says congrats on downloading it but will not download a single thing. On the problems downloading its only gives me answers to PC problems. Â
Do I really have to completely reinstall from my iMac install discs just to get itunes back ? I dont use time machine as I have a 1T hardrive in my imac and use most of it for itunes, even I cant afford a 1T stand alone hard drive just for backups.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....
My computer won't turn on. Earlier today while playin music it just paused itself. I minute later it resumed. Then tonight it just shut off instead of sleeping and now it won't start. All I can get if I'm lucky is the start up chime and a super quick flash of a white screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFirst off, let me explain the position I am in. I have the newest 13in MacBook with a 2.4Ghz hard drive. I installed Windows Vista on it recently after I got it. Many times while using Vista, all audio would stop and be replaced with crackling sounds. This would continue until I restarted. I tried going to Dell, downloading drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n WiFi Adapters and installing those, but that caused a worse problem. Windows can no longer find any networks, and when I select the Broadcom WiFi Adapters in Device Manager, it says "This device cannot start." and says it's Code 10 or something.

My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB memory. Start-up has become somewhat erratic. Consistently, if I close the lid on the computer it won't restart when I reopen it. I'll have to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, let up and then press it again. Sometimes restarting after a shutdown the computer will go through the long start-up I associate with a crash shutdown. Sometimes login start-up items don't start up. Sometimes I have to click somewhere on the screen to make the menu bar at the top of the screen visible. Overall, unexpected things keep happening. Although I don't think it probably relates, Chrome is my primary browser.

My start up disk is my hard drive.Â
Whenever I take the hard drive out my laptop just stops working and it's back to normal when I put the hard drive in, is there a way for me to use my laptop without having to physically have my start up disk (hard drive) plugged into my laptop?
Macbook Pro can't start up beyond the grey start up screen. There's a spinning wheel and bar that moves to 1/4 before Macbook Pro shuts down automatically.

I have the app called "SimpleTask" set to start-up when i turn my Mac on. The icon is just in the top taskbar. The problem is that when i turn my Mac on the window of the app comes up on my desktop and then i have to manually minimize it every time. Is there a way to have it start-up minimized in the taskbar from the start so i dont have to do it manually? There is no option for this in the preferences. There has to be a way to do it thou.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy lovely pro has decided that occasionally it doesn't like the idea of starting from sleep and sometimes won't boot up.
The fan runs at full blast (I think it's the CPU fan), a black screen and the power button on the front glows. I don't have any external drives attached, no stat programs running in the background except little snitch. Generally I close all programs before I leave my desk. After I hard reboot, I get a "do you want to send this to apple?" dialogue, with the errors pointing to the nvidia 8800gt. I don't have the full detail of the error box, I'll post it next time it happens.
I've zapped the pram, run the apple diagnostic and unplugged everything to reset the SMC or whatever it is.
About 1/2 of my wakes from sleep, and about 1 in 4 times when starting exhibit this.
