OS X :: Use Leopard Install Disk For A 13" MacBook Pro On A Mac Mini?
Dec 17, 2009
So I just bought Adobe Production Suite via Adobe's Education site. It doesn't run well on Snow Leopard at all. So what I decided to do was to use my Mac Mini to run AE in leopard. But the only disk for leopard I have is the one that came with my 13" MacBook Pro. Is it possible to install Leopard on my Mac Mini with the Install Disk that came with my MacBook Pro?

I just bought a brand new 13 inch Macbook Pro. Is it possible for me to use the Mac OS X install disk that came with it to install Leopard on my June 2006 Macbook, which is currently running Tiger? I've attempted to do so a couple of times and have gotten an error message.

My Macbook pro has just had a new 500gb hard drive in it and osx snow leopard had not been put on it because i never got a disk when i bought it. It still comes up with the grey screen with the flashing folder which i think would be normal because there is nothing on the hard drive. How do i install OSX Snow Leopard back on it the cheapest way possible?

I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

I am trying to upgrade my Dad's mac mini to Snow Leopard and have encountered a problem. When I insert the Leopard disk I cannot get it to read the disk, the box comes up as if I have inserted a blank DVD. I have also tried inserting ilfe09 disk and have the same problem. The drive does appear to be making an odd bleaping. I have tried resetting the PRAM and cannot get it to bleap?

I'm trying to install an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard from Apple on my Mac Mini running 10.5.8. I bought this system used and the volume says ";" and the error log code is 21. Seems it can't find valid softward ID to continue or the path is different. Not sure where to go with this.

My husband and I bought the family edition of Leopard last night, along with iLife08. I installed iLife while he installed Leopard. No problems on either Mac.
However, when I went to install Leopard, once I double clicked to start the install, it seems like my Mac won't "read" the disk. I get the spinning rainbow and there's lots of chugging sounds happening, but after almost an hour (yeah, I'm patient), it was pretty apparent that nothing was actually happening.
I'm really perplexed...it's not a disk problem, as it installed fine on my husband's Macbook...and it's not a drive issue as iLife installed just fine a few minutes before trying Leopard.

So I'm having a problem with my macbook air install disks. I have an external DVD drive (not macbook air's superdrive) and it can read my iMac leopard cd. However when I try to read the air's dvd it doesn't work. If I put the air's install dvds into my iMac's superdrive it reads. So I'm wondering did apple mac it so that the cds would only read on a superdrive!??!
Note: I had my computer formatted by the genius bar once and when they returned it my multitouch trackpad did not work and my keyboard would not illuminate. I believe they probably installed a desktop or the retail dvd on my computer. I got my trackpad working again by using the four finger hack and it got my keyboard illuminating again. Anyways, I don't think this had any effect, cause I don't remember being able to install leopard on my computer before this.

I bought a Mac Mini on ebay and it came with snow leopard already installed. Its been working great but today, i decided I want to swap the 80gb drive for the old 320gb drive from my laptop (the laptop got a shiny new SSD). Problem is, when i try to boot from the 10.6.2 install disc, it says that snow leopard cannot be installed on this Mac. Any way i can get it to install Snow Leopard on the new drive?
Also, I tried running the installer on the old HDD from inside the old Snow leopard install and it also said that it could not install snow leopard. It then asked me to restart and kept attempting to install Snow leopard and failing.
specs of Mac mini:
-Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
-Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
-1Gb 667MHz DDR2 RAM
-4 USB ports
for the record, i think the guy i bought it from bought a new mac mini and just included the discs that came with the new one in the one he sold me. The instruction manual shows a mac mini with a mini display port. The only OSX disc i got from him was the snow leopard one. also, if it matters, this mac mini is the only mac computer that I own.

On my Intel mac mini (march 2009), it took about 2 hours to install Snow Leopard. The whole time the CD drive was making some weird noises too. Wonder if I somehow messed it up when upgrading the ram.

I've been lurking for a while and on the fence about a new Mac Mini. Since I've given up on a Media Center PC with Blu Ray, I'm back to the Mac Mini. I've got two blu ray players and PS3, so I think we've got that covered! One of the things that I'd really like to have is maximum storage for the Mac Mini, since it will have the video and audio on there. The question is this. Is anyone out there running a Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard installed as a regular desktop machine? How does that work out? Is it worth it? I already have a very nice external Lacie double layer DVD burner, so the optical drive isn't necessary for me. Does the Mini Server with its 1TB of storage make sense? At $849 for a refurb at Apple.com, it seems pretty reasonable. Would love to hear thoughts from this crowd.

I just got a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard. The guy I bought it from took out the 80GB HDD that was in it and put my old MacBook 160GB HDD in it so it's like my old laptop on a mini. I want to start over with the system fresh and new as it'll be serving a new, re: family computer, purpose now. I don't have the SL upgrade/install disc right now and not sure if/when I'll get them back. Is there a way to wipe it back to new and keep it on snow leopard? This HDD was initially a Leopard drive when I first purchased it FYI.

Backup is a breeze, no problem there.
Restore is where I got a little confused. I don't have the original Leopard Install disk which I'm pretty sure I need to restore.
BUT I what i need to know is if i could potentially just download a Leopard Install disk in the form of a .dmg file and burn it to a DVD and use that to restore?

While upgrading from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 (Mac Box Set purchased from apple store) on my macbook pro the installation process froze up. Tried several times with same outcome. Even wiped the disk & reinstalled original software (tiger 10.4). No disk repairs necessary. So starting with a clean slate snow leopard still wont make it through the installation process.

My HDD died recently and I cannot get booted into OS X. It just hangs on the grey screen with the apple. I am (was) running 10.6.8
I am having a lot of trouble trying to boot from my install DVD. First of all I purchased a new HDD which came with Lion pre-installed on it. This worked fine, except when I tried to restore my latest time machine back up it used up 200GB of my disk space but nothing is restored? No doucments or music anywhere, photos, nothing. There is no change at all except half my storage has disappeared. I had posted another question on here and the reply said to use setup assistant, which I could not locate in Lion? I then tried to install Snow Leopard back over Lion but it would not let me. I tried to boot to the install disk but it just hung at the apple screen again.
I gave up and bought another brand new HDD but it won't recognise it on boot up. I just get a flashing folder with a ? in it. I tried to boot into the install DVD and again it wouldn't do it.
I then went back to my original HDD, and tried to boot to the install DVD from that (I hadn't tried this first off as my install disk was elsewhere and I purchased the Lion HDD as a stop gap measure) and it STILL wouldn't do it? This is now the original disk with the original install DVD (10.6) issued with my macbook pro when I purchased it and it will not boot to the DVD. Why why why?! It is almost enough to make me bin the lot and switch to windows.

Leopard 10.5.8 runs fine on this 2.26ghz Mac Mini. BUT every time I try to install Snow Leopard, with about ten minutes left in the installation process, I get a kernel panic. The only thing I can think of that is doing this is either 1. I am driving a 30" Cinema Display through a mini dvi to dvi adapter on the Mini -- reducing resolution but still running it fine (I do this with my 12" Powerbook 1.5ghz as well, doing it now as a matter of fact. It makes the picture huge but fine for me at moment) 2. 3rd Party Ram bought at Fry's Patriot 2 x 2GBs ... but passed hardware tests and no problems in 10.5.8. 3. I have not done all the imovie/garageband/idvd/remote desktop/itunes 9 updates in Leopard. I have done all the other updates to 10.5.8 and don't use these apps, so can't see how this is affecting a Snow Leopard update. Any thoughts? It quits and kernel panics during the Snow Leopard update. It was kernel panicking in Leopard, too, when using iPhoto a few weeks ago. Wondering if it is something to do with the Mini Dvi to Dvi adapter (not dual link) to 30" Cinema Display?

I purchased a top of the line Mac Mini Server and I'd like to install the standard version of Snow Leopard on it. I tried to the following: I inserted my retail snow leopard DVD in my macbook pro and I launched "Remote Install Mac OS X" (in /applications/utilities) and I followed the instructions. Then I booted the mac mini holding the "alt" key down and selected the snow leopard dvd as startup disk. What I see next is the Apple logo with the activity indicator spinning and after several seconds I see a "no entry" sign and nothing more it stays like this forever. Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a Mac mini server?

this isn't an isolated issue - there are threads about this over at Apple and InsanelyMac: I'm unable to install Snow Leopard. When I run the installer, it'll tell me that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD", because this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" (Macintosh HD being my OS X volume, obviously). I'm seeing this issue on a relatively new 1.8ghz Macbook Air with a 128gb SSD - however, as far as I can tell from the other threads, the problem also affects iMacs and Macbooks.
Some people apparently attributed the issue to a PGP installation they had on their harddrive. Others found a file called backup.backupdb in their root - deleting it fixed the problem. However, most people don't have any of that installed on their computers and the upgrade still won't work. - if anyone has found a solution to the issue, please let me know :-( I'm stuck here. I don't have an external drive for the MBA and booting from a network drive has never worked on this particular machine - so I can't do a clean install, either.
