Quick question - I currently run Vista off of Boot Camp; is Parallels a fairly straightforward installation that then lets me launch Vista off of my Boot Camp partition, or do I need to reinstall Vista onto another (separate) partition for Parallels?
View 2 RepliesI have a 13" MBP with a 250 gb hd, I partitioned the HD 25gb for Windows XP shortly after I bought it. I was unable to install my copy of windows, contacted apple after exhaustive search as to why... Long story short, I now have Vista to install... When I went back to Boot Camp Assistant; partition was gone. Researched... ran disk utility, repaired and erased partition. Bootcamp HD now shows up in desktop, still not in bootcamp assistant. Since I am unable to locate in assistant; would there be any problems with just installing Vista off the install disk by restarting? Any ideas what to do if this is not a good idea (short of restoring)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro 1,1 (2007) with the Apple RAID Card and 3 500GB drives in RAID 5. This leaves a total of about 1TB space, which [for historical reasons] is split into two 500GB partitions - one with the OS and home directories, the other with project data. I just received an additional 500GB drive matching the 3 already present, which I intend to add to the array -- bringing the total space available to 1.5 TB. Since I need to backup and restore the filesystem to expand the array, this is the perfect opportunity to revisit my partitioning scheme.
The problem with the current scheme is that I often find myself in the situation where I am working on a project, and one partition is full, but the other has plenty of space - so I end up wasting a lot of time moving files from partition to partition to get things done. So no matter what, I know that I want to combine the home directories and project data on one large partition. The question is should I have:
1) A separate small partition for the OS and a large one for everything else?
2) One giant partition for everything?
When i try to install windows vista through parallels it cancels the download during the expanding files step.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have seen that is rare in the Mac community to define a secondary partition on disk to hold the Home Directory leaving a partition for the operating system only. I would like to know your opinion on the matter of having a partition for the Home Directory as in my case it brought many benefits to me like every time you need to try a new installation of Mac OS from scratch, you must format the partition, which involves obtaining a prior backup of the entire contents of the Home Directory for later recall. This is not necessary if the Home Directory has its own partition. So do the Settings are also conserved. What do you think about it?, Do any of you use a separate partition for your Home Directory?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just ran my bootcamp partition for the first time on my newly installed Parallels. But when I ran it for the second time, the Win 7 loading icon no longer popped up. Instead, the Vista loading bars appeared and now appear each time I run Parallels, though Win 7 desktop will load up after the Vista loading bar.
Why is that?
I am getting my MacBook Pro from my college in the next few days and for a while now I have been thinking how I will listen to my music. My college likes to have the best of both worlds so they install Windows 7 right onto the hard drive before I get it. I have a zune and I highly prefer using the zune software as opposed to itunes. I also like having the option to listen to music on both OS's.
I was thinking about storing my media on a separate partition of the hard drive that is in a format that would work and is readable/writeable on both OS's.
I'm trying to run Boot Camp Vista through Parallels but i don't know how to set it up and can't find a guide anywhere. There's one in the settings but that skips over the most complicated bits. Anybody know of a guide for doing this or know how to do this?

I then installed an educational version of AutoCAD 2010, it installs and everything but when I open the program it begins loading until a point where it doesn't respond. I have reinstalled it, uninstalled it and installed it again, but the same exact thing happens each time.
When AutoCAD stops responding it says this at the bottom of the screen:
Opening: C:UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalAutodeskAutoCAD 2010R18.0enuTemplateacad.dwt
I don't know whether that is relevant or not. I read somewhere that to run AutoCAD 2010 on vista you need 2GB of memory. With parallels the way it is i can only commit 1GB of memory to vista. I was wondering if it would work on bootcamp where i can devote all my memory to windows. Is it even possible to uninstall parallels and all that and switch to bootcamp? If thats even possible would I be able to preserve my copy of vista or would I have to get a new license?
I want to make sure I'm doing this properly. I recently acquired a Macbook Pro, along with legit copy of Win Vista. So here's what I did:1. Reinstall Mac OS X from scratch, then get ALL the software updates. Perfectly clean! Then installed the additional applications from the 2nd disk (Q1: Is that second disk what is called Leopard?)2. Backed up my Mac with Time Machine to my external Seagate drive.3. Used Bootcamp to create a partition, then install Windows Vista Home Basic edition on to it, then installed the Macbook Pro drivers, then got ALL the microsoft updates (which took forever).

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. I have two drives on my MacBook Pro 17-inch, mid 2010. One is 500 GB and one is 80 GB. The system was installed on the 80GB drive and my home folder was on the 500GB drive. Having the "Home" folder on a separate partition was causing all kinds of permission problems. So, I did a clean install of Yosemite and want to put everything on the 500GB drive.
When I go to restore from Time Machine, it tells me it can't restore the "Home" account because it is on a separate drive. Then, of course, I can't login to that account on the restored system – I get an error "can't log in to that account due to an error."
How do I restore and associate the backed up "Home" folder to the new "Home" account on the restored drive? The names of the users are exactly the same on the backup as on the "Home" account on the restored drive.

For various reasons I would like to do a clean reinstall of Lion on my MBP. I do have the Apple Lion thumb drive for installation. I also have Parallels/Windows installed on this computer. My question: is there any way I can do a clean reinstall of Lion without disturbing the Windows/Parallel part?

I have opted for the 500GB hard drive, which I plan to divide equally between Leopard and Vista.
I was wondering if it is possible to create another partition (or two) within this Vista installation (e.g. C:, D:, E:, etc...).
I am going to be getting the new iMac 27" Quad when it becomes available and I was curious as to whether or not I could migrate my Windows Vista OEM partition. I would hate to have to keep buying another copy of Windows every year everytime I upgrade my computer. Also, I would like to migrate my pro apps that I own such as Logic, FCE, Aperture without having to reinstall them, as Logic, for instance is HUGE! When I look at the Logic apps GET INFO for instance it says that the file is only 769mb in size when in reality the program is over 40GB in size. When you migrate that type of app does it search your old computer and bring all the necessary files, in this case, jam packs, etc that make up the 40gb or so in Logic?

I just installed vista home premium on my imac using bootcamp, so far everything is okay except my speakers. They seem really tinny and very weird, the audio software that boot camp installed is something called Realtek HD, does this have something to do with it? My speakers are fine on mac osx, why not on the windows partition? it's seriously unbearable, anyone else come across this? I can't seem to change or tweak anything from any of the preferences in the sound options or anything either. I'm using the built it speakers on the latest 24 inch imac.

So I'm looking at installing Parallels 6. QUESTION - should I just simply use my bootcamp partition?
I did the Bootcamp thing, partitioned the drive and installed Vista. Everything went well and Vista works just fine. But everytime I boot into windows, I get partition errors before it boots.
For example it says:
"Warning: Unrecognized partition table for Drive 80. Please rebuild it using a Microsoft-compatible FDISK tool (err=4)"
It will come up 3 times, and then boot into Vista. Both OSX and Vista are working fine, but something is definately wrong though since I am getting this error.

View 20 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to use both Parallels Desktop 5 and Bootcamp on a 32GB partition? In other words, do I need a separate partition for each program or can I have Parallels use the same partition that I allocated for Bootcamp.
Would I get better performance if I ran my BootCamp partition through Parallels, or would I get optimal performance if I installed Windows inside Parallels, i.e. Virtual Machine (correct me if I'm wrong on the terminology)?
(I know that for the BEST performance I should use just BootCamp, but let's say if I didn't want to switch to BootCamp and wanted to access Windows through Parallels.)
One thing I've noticed while running BootCamp partition on Parallels is that if it hung and I wanted to force quit the app, it would warn me that I'd better quit the app by pressing the "Stop" button in Parallels so to avoid possibly corrupting the BootCamp partition and whatnot.

I have installed Windows 7 using bootcamp with no problems. I now want to use parallel so I can do some things in windows without restarting. I don't want to get rid of the bootcamp install though since I do gaming through it. Now that I've installed Parallel it's asking if I want to use the bootcamp partition in the virtual machine? Do I? I don't really understand.
