OS X :: IPhoto - The Volume For JPG Cannot Be Found
Jan 9, 2009
I have over 17,000 photos in iPhoto. One particular, recent batch keeps having an error. The thumbnails for the 82 photos are always visible. When I double click on one the photos I get an error that says: "The volume for "xxxxxx.JPG" cannot be found." It's specific to one event or batch of 82 photos. The photos and events prior and after are fine. I've restored the pictures from the SD card and the pictures will work like normal in iPhoto.... for a few hours and then I start getting the same error.
Same with Time Machine. I even went back 9 days (which is as far back as I'm willing to go back since I've uploaded pictures that I don't have back-ups for past that). Again, I'll restore iPhoto, the batch of 82 photos will act normally, as in I can see the thumbnail and then double click on it to get the bigger image and then suddenly I'll get the error again. I'm attaching a picture of the error.

My external memory card reader is temperamental and one day while importing its contents into iPhoto, it ejected itself. I got the warning about not safely ejecting my memory card and thought everything would be ok since that happened before and nothing too bad came from it. Only this time, iPhoto crashes regularly as it's searching for this one file--a .mov--that was on the ejected memory card. It searches for this file every time the app loads, and immediately after I try uploading a new batch of photos. The message I get is "The volume for "file name" cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume..." The crash entails beachball, fans going crazy, and the app freezes so must force quit.
I deleted the entry in the iPhoto library (in Finder) but it didn't help. I tried uploading a backup copy of that same file back into the iPhoto library. I've also tried inserting the original memory card with the file on it and nothing helps. What can I do? Version of iPhoto is 6.06.

After updating to .6, one of the folders I placed in the sidebar said that the volume could not be found. The folder opened fine if was through the documents folder. It even worked if I added to the sidebar again. It will not let me delete the old folder. I've tried right clicking, command clicking, just about everything. Anyone know how to delete this folder?

The volume for "Growl-1.1.4.dmg" cannot be found. At some point I must have accidentally added a DMG file to my Places, then removed the DMG prior to clearing it from Places. Now, when I attempt to select or right-click it I get the above message.
It does not appear in Finder > Prefs > Sidebar > Places.
How I can clear this out?

the macbook's powercord got unplugged and it shut down. after it was turned on again, when documents is clicked on in Finder the message "The Volume for Documents Cannot be Found" appears. Music and photos still work though. Almost all applications are also gone. Spotlight gets a few documents, but not most of them. Does anyone know what to do?

I recently uninstalled Safari because it wasn't compatible with what I need for The University of Phoenix online campus. However, I was trying to use a photography program today and it required me to use Safari. So, I put my X Leapord cd in and ran it. Now when I go to my sidebar, I get "The volume 'Ross' cannot be found."

When I attempted to open the iPhoto program, I was unable to do so and I received the following message:
"Your Photo Library was not found. Would you like to find your Photo Library? iPhoto can't continue without a Photo Library. Make sure the disk containing your Photo Library is connected."
This is very strange because I have never moved any of my IPhoto info to an alternate drive, or anywhere else. I have an Ibook G4 with IPhoto 6.0 and Mac OSX. I have also tried looking in User and found that "Library>Pictures" is not even there! When I pull up my Finder, "Photos" does not even appear in the left hand bar below "Applications", "Documents", "Movies", "Music". It is as if it has completely disappeared and I have not done anything (to my knowledge) to delete it! It is just somehow gone.

I saw that this issue has been addressed and there seems to be a few solutions for it but I had a hard time understanding some of the steps described in previous posts. I am running OS Leopard 10.5.8 and I am using a FreeAgent 500GB hard drive for Time Machine. Today I tried to back up and all of a sudden I'm getting the "Backup Volume Could Not be found" error. I tried deselecting it and reselecting it, and now its saying it doesn't have enough space to back it up.
I really don't want to completely erase the hard drive if that isn't going to fix it. Before now it would just overwrite a few old backups and make enough room for a new one, while leaving 2 old ones on there. I want it to do that.

Ive recently had to repair my startup disc volume/reinstall Tiger and now my iPod doesnt store songs after I sync it. All of my music is in iTunes and everything else seems to be working however once I disconnect my iPod NOTHING is there.
Ive been looking through all the previous discussions but cant seem to fix this on my own. And Im not even sure if I should be posting this question on here or in another forum...because Ive also noticed that there are no pictures in iPhoto .when I did the repair...it asked me if I wanted to save a copy of the previous system which I did.

I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.

I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?

I recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked.

Before I get flamed and etc... I have google and done some research about this issue but cannot find much about it.
I am not sure if this is a very common issue or topic but how do you adjust or modify your apple keyboard so that you can adjust screen brightness or volume? I am currently running Windows XP SP3, on a 2.4Ghz Unibody Macbook.

I have about 20 hours of low res digicam videos sitting in iphoto. When I launch Imovie, it loads all 20 hours without asking then proceeds to quit unexpectedly if I try to do anything. Is there a way to prevent iphoto from loading all of them without deleting the videos from my iPhoto library? I have about a 30 minute video I would like to edit I'm frustrated. How about removing all those clips except the ones I care about? Can I do that? (after waiting 20-30 minutes for them to load)

I suddenly cannot access the several thousand photos in my iPhoto Library. I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete. I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?

Thought I'd start this thread for people to discover/add any info they have on what iPhoto Faces is doing behind the scenes to help with troubleshooting, since Apple doesn't have any preferences for Faces in the iPhoto GUI. This is only for people who like to understand what is happening behind the scenes. Please note this is not for everyone and anytime you do anything to your iPhoto library you risk corruption and should have a backup copy. What I've noticed so far:
- iPhoto scans the library the first time it opens, and creates 2 faces .db files with the iPhoto Library:
face_blob.db
face.db
- iPhoto creates Faces thumbnails files and places them in the iPhoto Library/Data folder along with the other thumbnails it creates................

I am transferring info from an iBook G4 running Tiger to a MacBook running Snow Leopard. Everything is going well, except for my ability to transfer the iPhoto library. I have mounted the iBook to the MacBook via Firewire. When I transferred my iPhoto library from my MB to my new MBP, it was easy: all I had to do was drag over "iPhoto Library" from User>Pictures>iPhoto Library But it isn't set up the same way on the iBook: in User>Pictures, "iPhoto Library" is a folder instead of a small iPhoto icon (which you would need to right-click on to see its contents). When I copied the contents of the folder into "iPhoto Library" on the new MacBook, it didn't maintain all of the organization (eg. the albums). Is there any way to do this so that iPhoto will keep the organization of the photo library on the new MacBook, or am I destined to reorganize my thousands of photos into albums again? Please keep in mind that the MacBook is being set up as a new computer, and I am copying over the files/docs/music/photos that she wants to keep from the iBook. I am not using Migration Assistant.

i have returned all my photos into the new iphoto 9.1.However they aren't displayed the way they used to be. The computer is ignoring all the dates i entered on the individual film rolls and displaying them with date that's embedded on the digital images. An example is i have a film roll which contains photos of my cat Salem which range from 2004 to 2012. This 'folder' used to be displayed at the bottom of all the film rolls as i had it dated 12/25/2020 so i knew where it was and could add to it easily. Now though it's near the top lumped together with 2004 photos dated 2004-2012.How do i get iPhoto to display my photo film rolls the way they were on iphoto 6?I would go back to running TIiger and the apps that came with it including iPhoto 06 but i need snow leopard as i have bought two new Lacie 2 TB drives for storage and they need a newer operating system.

well it is a newer piece of gear came out in 2010. uses a different raid engine. The JMB393 CHIPSET. IT IS SMALL low cost. I may buy it and test it out. uses 2.5 inch drives. 5 wd scorpio blacks run about 300 bucks and this is 130. if you get fast read /write over 200mb/s it may be a good piece of gear for some.
