I have 2 macs (G4 1250) on a network with a Buffalo NAS Linkstation Pro Duo which most of the time works perfectly. However when one of the macs crashes some files on the NAS are locked and can not be written to. The get info permissions says either ' you can read only' or sometimes 'you have custom access' and offers no way of changing it.
I would be quite happy to turn off permissions as there are no other computers and no internet connection to this network. Otherwise if someone could tell me how to unlock the files I would be very grateful.
I am running OS 10.5.5
I have two accounts in my mac, I decided to transfer them all into one user, therefore I deleted one of the user. I have ticked not to delete the home folder and this cause a file named "XXXXX (deleted)" exists. I tried to drag the "XXXX (deleted)" into my home folder. But I cannot open anything. I knew I could solve it by setting in "Get Info". But it takes me millions of years, because there are lot's of files.
Could I rebuild the account before to move those folders?
I've purchased a series of Tutorial DVDs from digitaltutors.com and now wanted to be able to see the movie tutorial files in my Archos player on my way to work. To do that I must encode the files on a different codec.
The thing is the quicktime .mov files have some kind of protection that won't let me export or save the files.
Is there any software that can unlock the .mov files? Or a workaround on this matter.
I just got a new macbook pro, and when I popped my old secondary hard drive in, I notice that half of my mp3 files are now shown with a little lock next to them. I can manually un lock them one at a time, but I'm a professional DJ, and I have thousands of files. how to unlock an entire directory in one fell swoop? I didn't lock them to begin with, so this is aggravating.
I cannot save bpm or cue points to files while they're locked. My serato scratch live software will also not save overviews while they're locked.

I have a folder with numerous subfolders, each containing numerous files that i would like to batch unlock (vs tediously unlocking each individual folder).
failed attempts involve:
- tried the following terminal action: sudo chflags -R nouchg ( as suggested on this website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106237) but it did not work.
I did not try the other suggestions on the website because it started getting really complicated and i was afraid to do something that may cause damage/delete my files
- tried unlocking the folders and subfolders, however each individual file within the corresponding folder/subfolders remained locked
Partial but suboptimal solutions tried: - i found a partial but not optimal solution to my problem on this site:
however, the option-command-I will only allow me to unlock files each subfolder at a time (as i need to actually highlight the files themselves).
is there a way where i could just unlock all the folder/subfolders/files within an entire directory in one fell swoop?

i am a new mac user and i apologize in advance if there is some simple solution to this problem that i have yet failed to discover,
After upgrading to an SSD, i was having problems with restoring files from Timemachine. i fiexed that by naming my ssd drive the same as the drive that was backedup using time machine. now, i can't seem to edite any of the files restored in Documents from the backup. not can i edit or add content inside the folders withing documents. i dont know whats going on. they appear lock and there is no way to unlock them. it says i will need to duplicate the items!
Awhile back I installed a wonderfully speedy SSD in my mid-2009 MBP. I used Time Machine to "restore" my stuff. I thought it odd that after that, song files would come up as "locked"...after awhile I realized that EVERY song file in the iTunes Library was now "locked". The FOLDERS are NOT locked, but all the mp3 files within each folder ARE locked.
I know, of course, that "command-i" and uncheck the locked box works on each individual file, but how do I do this on the entire library? Is that even possible? The tedium of opening every single folder and unlocking every file individually would be insane. Is there any way to select the iTunes Music folder and have all the files in all subfolders "unlocked" at once?
External 120Gig firewire Hard drive became locked during one of the several swelling battery failures on my 17" MacBook Pro.

I have done the best I could with the available threads. Drive is still locked. I may be missing a critical step in the process. Is it possible for someone to walk me through it?
Apologies if this is in the wrong place for this question, but I've just bought a new MacBook Pro with 10.5.7 and put in a DVD - and got the "change region" prompt.
Having lived on and bought region-specific (because I had no choice) dvds on at least three continents, I can see that I will soon find myself unable to watch dvds on my laptop.
Surely there must be a way to unlock the drive? I don't want to buy an external drive. I'm even surprised this region business still exists. Presumably it's a way of forcing consumers to download pirated copies of movies once their drive has locked?
Whenever I restart Tiger, it closes all the directory windows. I thought it should preserve all the window states in Tiger when you restart.
If I resize the directory window in my internal drive, it does not preserve the new window size. But if I resize an external disk directory window, it preserves the new size.
I found out from Get Info that my internal drive is locked with read only permission only, but my external drive is unlocked with read+write permission.
How do I change the permission so the window states can be preserved on my home drive?

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD.
When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

I bought a new 500GB WD hard drive for my Late 2008 MacBook to upgrade from my 250GB drive. I have a hard drive enclosure, but I was wondering if when I install my 500GB hard drive, would I be able to use the enclosure to transfer files from my 250GB drive? I hope this was specific enough to get a clear response. If not, I'll try re-wording my question.
I have split my hard drive in two by having a friend help me reboot my macbook pro. I had him make a drive that was 70gb for "System Files" and a 180gb "Files Drive". I have only 27gb left on the systems file drive for applications. Is this going to be enough, I feel that i need to re-format my hard drive and start from scratch again.
I cannot believe I am actually in this position, but I accidentally reformatted my lacie 1TB external HD. The files were not overwritten as it was the most basic and quick format option, but they are not accessible.
Can anyone recommend a good data recovery app that works for OS X?
Anyone know what the best course of action would be?
So I bought a 2tb external drive to save space on my main drive - I copied all my movies and have been dropping a bunch of mini dv tapes onto it - but when I open the drive none of them show up
When I get info in disk utility I get one that shows I have avaialble 1.99TB of 2 TB - and right below it says 890 MB are used - don't get it
Tried the disk utility and it says they are working fine .... repair did not seem to do anything
When tried to save newly typed text in a document residing in my Mac Hard Drive it refused to save. The only option I still have is to create and save a new document on the Desktop
Tried to fix it by opening Info of Mac Hard Drive . Sharing and Permission options at the bottom of the pane display this:
system - write only (drop box)
admin - read only
everyone - no access
They are not accessible (are dimmed), padlock is dimmed too, so I cant do any changes.
Tried to Option Click on the padlock but it blinks for a moment but goes locked again. Never before had a problem like this.
I have admin access to my Mac with no password set -I just click on OK instead.
Ive tried to do something via System>Accounts - my account, but when I click on the locked padlock it blinks for a moment but goes locked again, so I cant do anything here. (My account is the only one - I have no guest or other accounts set.)
The same story with the padlock when tried pane Internet&Wireless.
Overall, I believe I did something wrong when tried to set my computer inaccessible for strangers when I am on public WiFi hotspot
I am not tech savvy and at this point I dont know what else to do My Mac is MacBookPro, OSX10.6
steps to unblock my HardDrive and get back my access to it ?
Today I was trying out Freeway and Nvu, and somehow one of the System folders and another folder (and all of the folders within those two major folders) cannot be modified. When I try to drag another file/folder into the restricted folders, a message tells me, "The item .... could not be moved because "Folder" cannot be modified."
How do I undo this restriction? There are two choices in the message window, one says "Authenticate," and the other says "OK." If I click on "Authenticate," then I can type in my password and complete the action.
I put Windows Media Player in my trash to throw away. When I attempt to empty my trash can, I am informed that all the files in the software are locked and therefore I can't throw away the software. When I open the info box on the software, it says it isn't locked. And when I tried to drag the software out of the trash and onto my desktop, it copied itself so then I got another version of the same software.
I'm sure there is something simple I am doing wrong, but I don't know what it is. If anyone knows what to do
Every time that i start my computer up and go to an application that requires a password (eg adium, mail, safari) i get a pop up that asks me to unlock my keychain. it's done this for a very long time but has only just started to cause a problem. sometimes when i open an application at start up the pop up for the keychain password doesn't appear and causes the application to freeze and requires a restart to fix the problem.
is there any way i can stop it from needing to ask me?
i've tried unlocking the keychain and then restarting
I've just installed a copy of XP sp2 on my macbook pro using the Bootcamp setup, and as far as I can tell it all went well. My problem is that now I have a popup saying that I have 30 days to unlock the product. The copy I used is one that came with the pc that I bought several years ago, and the key is the one on my pc. Because I purchased the xp copy with my previous pc I don't think I'm doing anything inapropriate, is there a way to unlock this software for my mac, or do I have to purchase a new copy?
Basically trying to write a paper on Euro vs. Dollar and have a freely available paper but it is locked so I'm unable to print it off. Find it much easier to print off and make annotations and highlight then simply read off the screen so was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I can print the file?
I found an app but it was shareware and $25 and as I'm a student that isn't really an option for a single citation. Would be very grateful if anyone has any answers.
I just noticed there is a locked exe on my desktop that has the filename "___" Its last modified date says to be Friday, June 20, 1969. Anyone know how it could have gotten there or if it's okay to delete.
I cannot unlock Macbook Pro. I might have forgot ID and psw or my child might have lock it up. I have a black screen and a request of ID and psw. However I am not able to unlock it. I am pretty sure about the psw but doubt abot ID.
